Rival Kurdish movements in Turkey : transforming ethnic conflict
This book explores the conditions that encourage non-violent civic engagement in emerging civil societies. Gürbüz examines the radical transformations over the past decade in the politics of Turkey's Kurdish minority. On the eve of the new millennium, the Turkish state was still openly denying the existence of Kurds, calling them "mountain Turks," and Kurdish populated cities were ruled under martial law. Kurdish politics in Turkey was dominated by a revolutionary movement, the PKK, which engaged in violent clashes with the state. Less than a decade later, the PKK's rebellion had all but ended, and Kurdish political and civic movements of numerous stripes had emerged. The Turkish state even introduced an official Kurdish-language TV channel. How did this rapid change occur? Gürbüz proposes that contending social movements has transformed the politics of the region, ushering in an era of post-conflict political and cultural competitionMustafa Gürbü
Miscelánea de estudios árabes y hebráicos / Sección Arabe-Islam / El extraño viaje de Ibn al-Jaṭīb por los agitados llanos de Tāmasnā : estudio y traducción de la riḥla
Ibn al-Khatib, Lisan al-Din, Rihla, Travel account, Exile, Marinids, Nasrides, Translation, al-AndalusDuring the winter of 1362 the exiled Granadian vizier Lisan al-Din Ibn al-Khaṭib was on a journey through the Maghrebian region of Tamasna in the midst of civil war. While his dethroned Nasrid monarch was fighting in Andalusian lands with Castilian support to regain the throne of Granada, he was crossing tribal regions to meet the great players of the Merinid conflict. The story of his journey, written in rhymed prose as a literary epistle, is contained in his work Nufadat al-yirab, which is considered his memories of exile. This paper analyzes the unique context of this rihla, offers a viable hypothesis to the motivations of the author and translates the unfinished text accompanied by a philological study that allows us to savor the exquisite and distinctive Khatibian style.Laila M. Social Media in southeast Turkey : love, kinship and politics
This book presents an ethnographic study of social media in Mardin, a medium-sized town located in the Kurdish region of Turkey. The town is inhabited mainly by Sunni Muslim Arabs and Kurds, and has been transformed in recent years by urbanisation, neoliberalism and political events. Elisabetta Costa uses her 15 months of ethnographic research to explain why public-facing social media is more conservative than offline life. Yet, at the same time, social media has opened up unprecedented possibilities for private communications between genders and in relationships among young people – Costa reveals new worlds of intimacy, love and romance. She also discovers that, when viewed from the perspective of people’s everyday lives, political participation on social media looks very different to how it is portrayed in studies of political postings separated from their original complex, and highly socialised, contextElisabetta Cost

Travel account, Rihla, Women, Stereotypes, Middle AgesThis paper tries to outline, through several Muslim traveler's narratives from the Middle Ages, the stereotypes they held on women, which conflicted with observed realities, both inside and outside the Islamic territory.
