The world as co-teacher: Learning to work with a peerless colleague
Get PDFThis papers focuses on the stories of two aboriginal people who in their own particular ways have taught us a tremendous amount. Through sharing their stories we will work towards supporting our claim suggest that the world as co-teacher can be understood as being more than just a metaphor. The paper extends this discussion into the work of philosophers Martin Buber and Benedictus Spinoza adding another layer to the compost pile are building. We end this discussion by suggesting a series of implications that result with regard to teaching, learning, and possibly beyond that are a result of this seeming minor shift from the other-than-human-world as backdrop for education to active co-teacher for our students and even ourselves
A Girl Named Similkameen

The piece details how when I was five years old I decided that if I ever had a little girl, I would name her Similkameen. Why? Because I was overcome at such a young age by a sense of tremendous magic and awe around the headwaters of the Similkameen River in British Columbia. This feeling stayed with me, returning each time I returned to the area.
In April, 2001, Similkameen Shannon O'Rourke was born.

Animism in Cambodia: Bioregionalism in Practice
No full textThis paper explores the parallels and intersections of Bioregionalism with Animism in Cambodia. This research aims to show that Bioregionalism draws heavily on animistic spirituality humanitys oldest spiritual belief system- and lifeways. To support this hypothesis, field interviews were conducted with the Tompuan, Brao, Kreung and Bounon ethnic minority groups of Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri provinces in northeastern Cambodia in January and February 2010. Some questions that were put to informants were: Were you always able to live locally sustainable lives? What role do spirits and wildlife play in peoples lives? What do ancient myths tell us about the environment? How well did local people coexist with the flora and fauna before industrialization arrived? Do indigenous people want to fully join civilized society? This broad study will enable students of Bioregionalism and Ecocriticism to expand their knowledge with insights gleaned from little-studied groups of tribal peoples in Cambodia who lived in a highly sustainable relationship with their ancestral lands until the relatively recent arrival of capitalism and industrialization

Get PDFIn the summer of 1983, the author purchased a twenty-acre plot of land in Paradise Township, an historic Oklahoma settlement nestled between the Tallgrass Prairie and the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. Lacking adequate educational options for their four young boys, the family commenced on a five-year experiment in “unschooling.” This chapter from a forthcoming memoir chronicles her journey from Romantic notions of “being one with nature,” to co-existing with “the real deal, in all its teeming, hairy, ugly, creepy, crawly, slithering, slimy, swarming, buzzing, biting, sucking, stinging glory.” The article makes the argument that contemporary children need to be immersed in observations of and experiences with all sorts of creatures, even those that are “downright hostile to humans and ugly to boot,” if they are to develop a deep understanding of the natural world
