Along side this was the discovery that our species was a product of the same natural forces that generated the cycad and the albatross. The crucible of these connections was along the wind swept shores of Tierra del Fuego. It was in the fertile mind of Charles Darwin, the volunteer naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, that these ideas were percolating. In the new millennium, the author experiences the land and the Yahgan people, whose ancestors interacted with Darwin. These experiences during a number of international expeditions to Isla Navarino, Chile, along with Darwin’s experiences and thoughts, help reveal our species as a product of wilderness and wildness
Storytelling Morality: Ecofeminism, Agrarianism, and Pigs in the Field
Get PDFUnderstanding our relationships with and obligations to the natural world through the labor and practice of food production is central to our development as moral beings and environmental citizens. Both ecofeminism and agrarianism—in their overlap and distance—can offer ideas about how best to express our environmental and citizenship ethics through the everyday act of growing, eating, and engaging with food. Raymond Anthony (2009) reminds us that a narrative ethics approach—embraced by both ecofeminism and agrarianism as a meaningful source of ethical wisdom—when applied to animal agriculture helps to build a more inclusive moral community. But Anthony cautions that the predominant agricultural storyline is made up of incompatible camps. He proposes a new story for agriculture, one that offers reconciliation or revitalization. In the spirit of this revitalization, we offer two stories of our material practice of raising pigs on an educational organic farm to illuminate what we see as important ethical, social, and environmental context for our new agricultural narrative. Through these stories we aim to give context to the theoretical ecofeminist and agrarian dialogue about ethics rooted in the land, so we might better understand what appropriate relationships with nonhuman others and natural systems might look like in practice

No full textThis is a detailed summary, discussion, and critique of Jerry Kobalenko's book of High Arctic photography and travel writing, written by a reviewer who has traveled to a number of the places Kobalenko describes - sometimes with Kobalenko himself. This is a good book, written by someone with in-depth and intimate High Arctic experience. But the writing does not necessarily play off of the "Changing" element in triumphs in its title. The book scants the indigenous record in High Arctic islands, and posits an imaginary "Eden" in place of a real, rapidly changing, and increasingly important geo-political archipelago
