Why Deep Ecology Had to Die
Get PDFIn this essay I trace my history of entanglement with deep ecology from its first emergence on the scene, through some vicious attacks and the loss of its early promise as a movement, to more mature criticisms and finally to its recent, ignominious purge from polite ecophilosophical discourse. I will explain the "deep reasons" why I think deep ecology had to "die" at a certain point in the history of environmental philosophy, indicate some avenues the discipline might want to take in the years ahead, and suggest that deep ecology be accorded a place of honor as an approach to living nature that can continue providing us with valuable insights

Get PDFOn March 23rd, 2014, the editors of The Trumpeter received a letter from Florence R. Shepard, Paul Shepard’s widow, regarding her discovery of a short, previously unpublished essay of Paul’s. To our knowledge, it was written in 1995 before he was overcome by the illness that would take his life on July 16th, 1996. We do not know if the essay, entitled “Radical Politics,” was intended as an editorial, if it was sent out at the time or rather abandoned or lost, or if it can be found in his archived papers at Yale. While the essay itself does not in any way overturn his body of published work, we thought it provided an excellent opportunity for exploring anew the political implications of his thought. Rather than publish the piece alone in a standard issue of The Trumpeter, we invited a number of scholars familiar with Shepard’s work to use the essay as a springboard to engage with any aspect of the essay they found to be provocative. Indeed, we hope that this issue will open the door to further and sustained reflection on the directions Shepard’s thought may inspire
Deep Ecology: What is Said and (to be) Done?
Get PDFAttacked by anthropocentric social, cultural, and political theorists deep ecology has been relatively wary of engaging with the theories that underpin such critiques. This socio-theoretical lacuna does, however, leave deep ecology open to the charge of being ecologically reductive. Despite the difficulties they present many of these socio-theoretical theories offer diverse insights into our current environmental predicaments and creative opportunities for rethinking what it might mean to constitute a community of life on Earth. The development of such views, which we might term ecologically oriented social theory (EOST) is, I argue, a key task for radical ecosophies
