A Study Assessing Gender Distribution Using Maxillary Sinus
Get PDFINTRODUCTION: Corpse recognition is a difficult procedure. Comparison of both ante mortem and post-mortem records is essential and assists in identification of corpses. Typical methods of identification however sometimes may be inconclusive. Gender determination is an important aspect in identification of corpses. Previously skull, pelvis and the long bones have been used in gender determination. It has been reported earlier that maxillary sinus remains intact even when skull and long bones may be badly disfigured in incarnated victims.AIM: The aim of this study was to examine whether the measurements of the maxillary sinuses may possibly be used for gender determination.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography scans of total of 50 Adults patients within the age range of 25 to 65 years from the previous dental records were taken. Sample comprised of 25 (50%) males and 25 (50%) females. The width, height and length was measured in all cases using CT images.RESULTS: Maxillary sinus exhibits anatomic variability between genders. A significant difference in the length and height of maxillary sinus was observed with respect to males and females. (p<0.005)CONCLUSION: We conclude from the present study that the height and length of maxillary sinuses together with other bones can be used for gender determination when skeleton is not available

In the field of orthodontics new innovations have not only increased the efficiency of an orthodontist to produce better results but at the same time, reduced the treatment duration, thus positively influencing the patient compliance. So it seems a win-win state for both the orthodontist and the patient. New solutions for the old problems have resulted in advancements in orthodontic materials and their cascading effect on appliance design and treatment strategies. This article briefly embraces us about the recent trends being followed by an orthodontist to achieve better results in shorter duration

Prevalent Dental Myths and Practices in Indian Population- A Systematic Review
Get PDFObjectives: The present systematic review was conducted to assess knowledge and awareness on prevalent dental myths related to infant teething, pregnancy and cleft lip and palate and various oral health habits in Indian population. Method: Electronic and manual database was searched vigorously between period of January 1994 to January 2017 using PUBMED and GOOGLE SCHOLAR search engines to include relevant studies from peer-reviewed journals which have been conducted in India.Results: A total of 24 scientific questionnaire studies conducted in various states of India were included. 16 out of 24 studies (66.67%) dealt with various dental myths and practices prevalent among rural Indian population whereas only 1 study included both urban and rural populations. Region wise maximum studies were conducted in Southern region [8 studies (33.3%)] followed by 7 studies (29.16%) in Northern, 6 studies (25%) in Western and 1-1 study (4.16% each) in Eastern and Central India respectively. Conclusion: The results indicate that the knowledge and awareness levels about dental myths and oral practices in both rural and urban population in various regions of India is inadequate. It is necessary for dental practitioners to educate masses for better dental health
Hypercalcemia and Milk Alkali Syndrome: A Case Report

Elderly subjects, especially those on drugs that GFR are more prone to acquire this syndrome. Those who take calcium supplements have high chances of developing milk alkali syndrome and this stands amongst the top five causes of hypercalcemia. Herein we present a case of hypercalcemia who was taking only small amount of calcium supplements but had a few concomitant risk factors
Child Drawing: A Projective Tool for Dental Anxiety Assessment
Get PDFINTRODUCTION: Assessment of child’s anxiety is important in order to determine the success of dental treatment. Drawing, a nonverbal, self-report, projective and non-invasive technique may prove be helpful and needs to be explored in order to access anxiety in children requiring dental treatment.AIM: To investigate the applicability of children’s drawings as an indicator to measure their level of anxiety.MATERIALS & METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a total of hundred children between age group of 4-6 years. Children were asked to draw dental operatory on A4 sheet and colour it with basic set of 12 colours. The drawing was scored using Child Drawing: Hospital (projective scale) scale and the results were compared with pulse oximeter readings (physiological parameter) and Venham Picture Test scorings.RESULTS: Child Drawing: Hospital scale scoring had a positive correlation with pulse oximeter reading (involuntary) (p-value = 0.125) and a negative correlation with Venham picture test (p-value = 0.140).CONCLUSION: Drawing may be statistically significant projective tool significant to assess child anxiety in dental setting
