Caries Pattern In Primary Molars With Early Pulpal Involvement In Mixed Dentition

INTRODUCTION: Caries in primary dentition may lead to high risk in permanent dentition; it is therefore important to identify those children who are caries affected. Specific and distinct patterns of caries attack might indicate a distinct etiology or are most likely associated with the subsequent development of carious lesions on other surfaces of teeth.AIM: To assess caries susceptibility and prevalence in primary teeth and evaluate the prevalence of caries according to individual molar surfaces in 4-8 year old children.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross sectional retrospective study was conducted in the pediatric department of SGT Dental College using convenient sampling with caries in teeth as chief complaint. 70 radiographs were examined in the age group of 4-8 years. Lesions present on mesial, distal and occlusal surfaces were recorded on the chart after radiographic examination.RESULTS: As per results, distal surface of D(45.40%) and mesial surface of E (37.80%) showed maximum caries on adjacent proximal surfaces and significant dependence (p value<0.05) was found between the presence of lesions on adjacent proximal surfaces. The D(76.1% )and E(79.1% )showed significantly higher caries experience on the proximal surfaces in conjunction with occlusal caries but were statistically not significant.CONCLUSION: In the presence of non-proximal caries (occlusal caries), the chances of proximal caries are increased as seen radiographically. Thus need for treatment, are likely being underestimated during visual examinations alone

    Anaphylactic Reactions to COVID-19 Vaccine

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a major health crisis and high mortality rates. Progression to a severe and potentially fatal form of COVID-19 is associated not only with massive viral replication, but also with an inappropriate inflammatory response against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Therefore, drug strategies may target not only the viral infection itself, but also inappropriate immunoinflammatory responses. Numerous wide-ranging medications have been attempted to improve the prognosis and outcome of COVID-19, especially among hospitalized patients due to an acute respiratory distress syndrome. Vaccination against COVID-19 is an essential global intervention to control the current pandemic situation. Vaccines often cause adverse events; however, the vast majority of adverse events following immunization are due to the protective immune response induced by the vaccine, and not due to an allergic reaction. It is important to know that how can SARS-CoV-2 vaccines be administered with minimal risk of allergic reactions. In fact, currently available mRNA vaccines may usually be administered readily even to patients with allergies. The following review describes the risk of severe anaphylaxis and provides practical tips for safe vaccination

COVID-19 Pandemic and the Debatable Use of Hydroxychloroquine

Healthcare professionals and scientists were not able to provide a good answer to the COVID-19 pandemic that shook the whole world. Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug with a good safety profile. It can be used in pediatric subjects as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women. Hydroxychloroquine is a widely used, essential drug in dermatology. It has got anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. It was globally prescribed to prevent and treat COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The use of this drug in treating COVID-19 is debatable and for sure is not indicated in the labelling documents provided by the companies that manufacture this drug. The unnecessary use of this drug also led to short supply. We hereby review its properties, mechanism, safety profile and the issue COVID pandemic has caused to the supply of this drug

Evidence Based Decision Making: A Review

In today’s era, many of the decisions are based upon gut feeling, intuition, or instinct rather than relied on actual scientific data and facts. It’s important and essential to do the needful based on facts and not feelings for the best possible outcomes. Evidence based decision making in the field of healthcare describes the integration of basic rules of evidence as they evolve into implementation in daily practices. In dentistry, the principles of evidence-based decision making as well as a very common clinical dilemma to make a decision on whether to save and preserve the natural tooth or to extract and replace it with an implant or any sort of prosthesis is often experienced by a clinician easily. The need of evidence plays a very important role in making decisions. It helps provide a better outcome which will result in fewer casualties

Tardive Akathisia in an Adult on Long Term Metoclopramide

Metoclopramide is prescribed to subjects dealing with gastrointestinal issues like delayed gastric emptying, nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. It is also used to treat chemotherapy and surgery related nausea and vomiting.  Although it is very effective in targeting stomach related illnesses, severe adverse drug reactions can occur in those who take metoclopramide.  This case report describes a 32-year-old female who suffered from tardive akathisia while being treated with long-term metoclopramide. Long term exposure to causative medication leads to evolution of Tardive akathisia and this can stay for a lifetime. It is important to restrict the exposure duration of triggering drug. Health care professionals and patients should be well aware of this neurological adverse event of metoclopramide

Hiccups Associated with Steroid Injection: A Case Report

Hiccups fall under rare adverse events that occur after an epidural steroid injection. A few studies in medical literature have reported on the physiological and pharmacological aspects of the same and some case reports have also been published. We hereby report a case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with hiccups after epidural steroid injection. She was successful treated with chlorpromazine and omeprazole
