Role of Bone Grafts in Implant Surgery: A Review
Introduction of dental implants and more concern in patients about esthetics after loss of natural teeth increases the demand of bone grafts. Various types of bone grafts as allografts, xenografts and autografts are used all with their own pros and cons. Bone grafts are more likely to succeed when the conditions at the recipient site are favourable and certain requirements are fulfilled. This review explores the use of various bone grafts in implant dentistry
Curious Case of Rodent Poison: A Case Report
Osteonecrosis was first described as a consequence of ionizing radiation used in the treatment of malignant tumors but later a variety of causes for osteonecrosis were found which include, Medication induced, radiation induced, chemical induced and infection induced. Terms such as: bisphosphonate osteonecrosis (BON), Bisphosphonate Associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (BONJ), Bisphosphonate Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (BRONJ), Antiresorptive Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ARONJ) and Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) have all had proponents and all continue to be utilized. However, Migliorati first proposed a designation of the disease as osteochemonecrosis. This case report is about a chemical induced osteonecrosis patient who placed rat poison inside the mouth.
Green Tobacco Sickness: A Review
It is still an unknown fact among many that tobacco harvesters are at a potential at a risk of suffering from “Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS)”, with its prevalence seen mostly among Asian and South American tobacco harvesters. These harvesters working in hot, wet conditions are likely to develop GTS, as in such climatic conditions, the wetness and high humidity causes nicotine to reside on the surfaces of the leaves, while the high ambient temperature increases skin absorption, thereby increasing plasma nicotine concentrations by 30-45%. Patients suffering from GTS report nausea, vomiting, pallor, dizziness, headaches, increased perspiration, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased salivation, prostration, weakness, cough with or without expectoration, breathlessness and occasional reduction in blood pressure or heart rate. GTS is self-limiting and of short duration and hence treatment is not always necessary and not often sought by the harvesters. This review educates readers about GTS as well as encourages their participation in making tougher regulations in their respective countries for the control of this disease
Sports Dentistry: Dental Traumatology with Preventive Measures– A Review
In sports, dental trauma is the main link between sport and dentistry. Sports dentistry is the treatment of sporting oral / facial injuries and associated oral disorders and manifestations. Sporting practices have been found to be responsible for 13 per cent of total oral trauma in children. It is emphasized that from high schools to professional teams there is a great need for a "Team Dentist." In this review, we discuss the relationship between sport and dentistry, and the importance of educating parents, teachers, and children on sport-related injury prevention
Antibiotic Therapy Associated Cardiotoxicity
The improper and frequent use of antibiotics has been on a rise. Empirical use for unapproved indications leads to development of resistant pathogens. Many other adverse drug reactions are associated with the use of antibiotics. These may be due to the direct effect of these drugs or due to their interactions with other therapeutic agents. Cardiac toxicities like QT prolongation, aortic aneurysms and dissections are of high concern and may result in long-term health risks. To prevent these adverse reactions, antibiotics should be used as per the manufacturer’s and physician’s instructions. The use of interacting drugs should be avoided wherever possible. Polypharmacy practice should be done after considering all the patient’s health aspects. This review summarizes the cardiac toxicities of commonly prescribed antibiotics and their interactions with other drugs
How Safe is the use of Antiseptics and Disinfectants in Children?
A wide range of antiseptic preparations and disinfectants have been used in varying concentrations and combinations in children but much research work regarding their safety and efficacy is not available. The aim of this review is to expand and broaden the pre-existing guidelines useful to the health care professionals so that antisepsis in the pediatric field can be performed appropriately, and at the same time, guarantee safety for children. Previously published studies were also assessed while writing this review. As per the data, there may be several local and systemic toxic effects related to the use of antiseptics and disinfectants in children. Properly designed large multicenter randomized clinical trials are required to direct the healthcare professionals regarding the most appropriate and safe antiseptic and disinfectant to use in pediatric patients

Diversified Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Overall Health and Well-Being of Children: A Survey Based Case Study
BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of non-essential services including educational institutions and recreational facilities all around the world. The pandemic has affected children at different levels including their mental well- being. AIM: The objective of this study was to assess the overall impact of the pandemic on the well-being of children in terms of their demographic details, physical activity pattern, sanitary practices, mental health and nutritional practices. 300 children aged between 4-18 years were surveyed through an online survey developed as a Google form. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parents or guardians were asked to fill the questionnaire. The questionnaire was approved by Medical doctors for the sake of accuracy and authenticity. RESULTS: The annual household income of majority of the respondents was between 1-5 lakhs, and they belonged to urban and nuclear households. Although modern amenities were available for the children at home, yet majority of them did not have a separate room and a personal smart phone. 89.4% (n=268) children used internet for 1-5 hours every day. 82.4% (=247) of them were also enrolled in other online courses as well. CONCLUSION: The paper addresses the changes impacting children’s lives at different levels related to their health and well-being. The results must be corroborated with studies reported in literature and may be used for formulating strategies to make children adapt the situation without any negative impact on their personality
Preterm Labor and Treatment Efficacy-Safety
With medical sciences on the verge of advancement, preterm labor still remains a bothersome issue in modern obstetrics. A few therapeutic agents that suppress uterine contractile activity have gained success up to some extent. Tocolytics are medications used to suppress premature labor. These drugs can decrease the strength and frequency of uterine contractions and help in delay the onset of labor but are not able to prolong pregnancy to full-term. Presently, the choice of a best tocolytic drug remains debatable. This review discusses efficacy and safety of various useful agents which have been used so far. Further clinical trials are required to select an effective, and most importantly, safe therapy for the threatened preterm labor
