    The Impact of Social Support Networks for College Students

    Mental health challenges among college students, such as increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and stress, have become a growing concern, impacting both academic performance and overall well-being. While various factors contribute to mental health outcomes, social support networks may play a significant role in shaping student resilience and coping mechanisms. In our research, we aim to explore how social support networks influence the mental health of college students and identify key factors which contribute to stronger support systems. Using a mixed-methods approach, we plan to review existing literature, analyze published data, and more to better understand the connection between social connections and mental well-being. We hope to find how students with more robust support networks experience lower stress levels, greater emotional resilience, and overall improved mental health. By identifying the most effective types of support systems, our research will contribute to ongoing discussions about student well-being. Ultimately, we aim to highlight the importance of strengthening social support networks as a proactive measure to help mitigate mental health challenges among college students

    Data Driven Solutions: Understanding Turnover Trends and Tenure Among OIT Student Employees

    Student employees in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) gain a lot of experience and are proven valuable to the division, but are not transitioned into long-term, full-time positions after graduation. Many leave their roles prior to graduation, and this study sought to explore why student employees leave their jobs with OIT and how this information may be used to reduce student turnover rates. Student employment data from 9 departments with employee departure dates between 2021-2024 was analyzed using R Studio, pivot tables, and graphs. Among the student employees who left OIT voluntarily, nearly half (33 students) left in May, indicating a significant seasonal trend. Also notable, July 31st, 2021, experienced the highest hire rate of the time period analyzed, with 12/87 employees being hired, almost 15% of students in this timeframe. Additionally, among the 9 departments that were analyzed, 1 department (cloud computing) boasted both the highest salary for students and the longest tenure. By understanding the reasons behind student departures, OIT can better retain valuable student employees and provide a stronger workforce pipeline

    Microbial Battles: Exploring Inhibitory Interactions Among Sagebrush Bacteria and Fungi

    Leaves can harbor diverse communities of endophytic (internal) and epiphytic (external) microbes. Some of these leaf microbes can mediate community interactions by inhibiting the growth of neighboring microbes via antimicrobial compounds. This study investigated the interactions and inhibitory potential of fungal and bacterial isolates derived from sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) leaves when grown together in co-cultures. Microbes were isolated from the surface and internal sagebrush leaf tissue samples and cultured on nutrient-rich media that supports the growth of a wide variety of bacteria and fungi. Inhibition assays were conducted using co-culture techniques, measuring zones of inhibition to quantify antimicrobial activity. Preliminary results show variation in inhibitory activity among the sagebrush-associated microbes. Some isolates exhibited broad-spectrum inhibition, while others displayed no inhibition. One microbe had large zones of inhibition with certain microbes, but then displayed no inhibitory activity when grown with multiple other taxa, indicating the presence of taxa-specific interactions. This research will provide insights into the potential of sagebrush-associated microbes as a source of novel antimicrobial compounds and highlight the complex interactions within the sagebrush leaf microbiome. Future studies could focus on identifying relevant microbial taxa, their active compounds, and the ecological roles of these antimicrobial interactions

    Increasing Public Transportation Skills for Young Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often experience difficulties accessing transportation, which can limit their independence and participation in the community. In this study, undergraduate peer interventionists used Google Maps, constant time delay, and total task chaining to teach young adults with IDD to navigate public transportation. Young adults with IDD were enrolled in an inclusive post-secondary education program and undergraduate students served as peer interventionists. An experimental, single-case multiple probe across participants design (Horner & Baer, 1978) was used to evaluate the effects of total task chaining with constant time delay on the number of independent steps completed. All sessions started on campus and ended at a destination of the young adult’s choice. A 17 step task analysis was developed to measure the number of correct steps completed independently to complete a bus ride. This study is currently in data collection and preliminary results will be shared at the showcase

    Beyond the Minimum: How Long Do Idaho Prisoners Serve Beyond Their Determinate Sentences?

    Under the Idaho Unified Sentencing Act, individuals sentenced to prison receive both a broad indeterminate sentence and a minimum determinate sentence, which they must serve before becoming eligible for parole. This unique sentencing structure raises an important question: How long are individuals in Idaho’s prisons actually staying past their determinate sentence? Despite its significance, this question remains largely unanswered due to limited research, restricted public access to sentencing data, and the complexity of criminal justice legislation, which makes it difficult for the general public to understand. Parole boards ultimately have the discretion to release individuals after their mandatory sentence based on various factors, including offense severity, behavior, and risk assessments. To address this gap in information, this study examines all individuals released from Idaho prisons in 2023. In partnership with the Idaho Department of Corrections, I analyzed the proportion of indeterminate sentences served, how long individuals remained incarcerated compared to their full sentence, and how these patterns varied by crime type. The findings provide essential insights into sentencing outcomes in Idaho, along with policy recommendations, study limitations, and directions for future research

It illuminates how White language supremacy is used in the Framework to code the idealized information literate individual as White. By articulating the use of White language supremacy in the Framework, this article suggests how to begin the process of deconstructing this White ideal and thus transforming the Framework from a tool of colonization and oppression into something that steps toward liberation

    Poison Detection in Federated Learning via Blockchain

    Federated learning (FL) improves upon traditional deep learning by allowing nodes to jointly train a model on their own private data. This process ensures privacy, but it is susceptible to data poisoning attacks that decline model integrity, and it typically relies on a global server to perform a majority of the tasks. To reduce this reliance on a single entity, blockchain technology can be integrated. Current strategies used to detect poisoning in FL take significant liberties with trust or lack a unified detection approach. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-enabled system for poisoning detection in FL that utilizes an auditor model, Quo, to evaluate model updates for malicious behavior. Consensus on the blockchain is utilized to create Quo and compare it to all updates. We employ a weighted aggregation method based on poison threshold scores. We implement our solution to show the proposed system maintains robust model accuracy while strengthening security and decentralization

    Body Orientation During the Performance of Parental Behaviors in the Bluebanded Goby (\u3cem\u3eLythrypnus dalli\u3c/em\u3e)

    Vertebrates show multiple styles of parenting including biparental, maternal (female only), paternal (male only), or no parental care. Lythrypnus dalli is a bidirectionally sexually plastic fish that uses a paternal care strategy. This study focuses on examining the body orientation of the male during the performance of parental behaviors categorized as fanning and rubbing. To accomplish this, we set up stable social groups consisting of one male and two females and recorded two sets of videos separated by one week. Each recording session lasted one hour and consisted of two views. First, to determine body orientation of the male, a high-speed camera recorded displays of parenting inside the nest tube. Second, to assess the overall social interactions of the group that typically included aggression and courtship, an iPad was set above the tank. Both sets of videos were analyzed using KINOVEA. We predict that the caudal fin will move the most during active parenting. If the male was not parenting, we predict that time was spent interacting with individuals outside the nest. These data will help gain insight into body orientation during performance of parental care and also determine other behavioral interactions outside of parenting

    The Effects of Surface Irregularity and Sex on Spatiotemporal Parameters

    Females are more susceptible to tibial stress fractures than males. A sex dimorphism in gait spatiotemporal parameters like changes in cadence, stride length, and stride width during running may increase tibial bone load and females’ injury risk. However, it is currently unclear if running over uneven surfaces impacts gait spatiotemporal parameters and exacerbates a hazardous dimorphism in female gait parameters. Twenty four healthy runners (12 male, 12 female) had gait spatiotemporal parameters quantified when running at 4.5 m/s for flat and uneven surfaces. During trial, cadence, stride length, and stride width were quantified and submitted to analysis. We anticipate females to run with a higher cadence, and shorter and narrower strides to minimize ground impact forces that occur with longer, wider strides and the uneven surface to elicit quicker, shorter, and narrower strides for both sexes. Understanding the impact of surface running gait parameters is important knowledge to alleviate common running related musculoskeletal injury, such as tibial stress fracture

    R.E.M.: Science Fiction Short Film

    In the Spring semester of 2025, my research included an intricately outlined plan to execute the making of my film “REM” from start to finish. At the beginning, all of my deadlines were completed promptly starting with auditions, to location scouts, to storyboarding, shot listing, and schedules - everything was accounted for down to the most minute details. I learned a lot about the process of filmmaking and how incredibly helpful the specifics of planning are when production begins. Throughout the production and post production process, some advice for myself is to begin a film production only when the script is officially finished and the director (me) knows the story like the back of their hand. This is something that I questioned on and off set almost every day and I realized how imperative it is to understand how to stitch every bit of the story together because when it gets to the editing bay, it becomes another person’s movie. My goal was not to just make “REM” a film, but rather a message challenging the controversial impact of advanced technologies on the human species. I hope that by the final stages of the editing process, my project will be something to watch and something to talk about
