Comparison of the Effects of Dispersed Noble Metal (Pd) Biomass Supported Catalysts with Typical Hydrogenation (Pd/C, Pd/Al2O3) and Hydrotreatment Catalysts (CoMo/Al2O3) for In-Situ Heavy Oil Upgrading with Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI)
No full textCatalyst deactivation due to coke and metals deposition as a result of cracking presents a challenge in heavy oil recovery and upgrading. This is particularly pronounced for in situ upgrading techniques, in which pelleted catalyst is packed around the perimeter of the horizontal producer well of the Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI) process. The fixed bed of catalyst is virtually impossible to regenerate in place, promoting investigation of alternative contacting via the dispersion of nanoparticles. The catalysts studied were finely crushed micro-particulates with average size of 2.6 µm and also a catalyst prepared upon a bacterial support. The latter has advantages in terms of ease of preparation of catalysts from recycled metal sources. Heavy oil of API gravity 13.8o and viscosity 1091mPa.s was used as feed and upgrading was performed in a batch reactor at 425 oC, with a catalyst-to-oil ratio of 0.02 (g/g), and at an initial pressure of 20 bar. The activity of the Pd/biomass catalyst was evaluated against a number of other catalysts: Pd/Al2O3, Pd/C, Al2O3 and Co-Mo/Al2O3. By using the Pd/biomass catalyst, the produced oil gravity increased by 7.8o API, and its viscosity was reduced to 7 mPa.s. This effect corresponded to an increase in the amount of low-boiling distillate (IBP-200oC) from 34.6 vol.% (original feedstock) to 53-62 vol.%, potentially reducing the amount of diluent needed for pipeline transport of bitumen. The coke yields were (wt%): 13.65 (Al2O3), 9.55 (Pd/Al2O3), 6.85 (Pd/C) and 3.87 (Pd/biomass). The Pd/biomass catalyst showed significantly reduced coke yield compared to thermal cracking and upgrading using Pd/C and Pd/Al2O3 catalysts, which could greatly enhance catalyst survivability in the field
Theory and Evidence on the Finance-Growth Relationship: The Virtuous and Unvirtuous Cycles
No full textSince the 1980s, financial crises have tended to reoccur with increasing frequency and growing intensity. They are endogenously generated by the established OTD (Originate-To-Distribute) model within the new finance-growth paradigm. Good finance fosters the correct allocation of financial resources, the fair redistribution of wealth and positive economic growth (the virtuous cycle), whereas bad finance captures part of the created wealth and, thanks to a highly technologically advanced financial system with the ability to create money ex nihilo, over time it drags the economy down to recession or negative growth, destroying wealth and consequentially social welfare (the unvirtuous cycle). Therefore, structural factors are at the foundation of the persistence of instability and thus of what we define as the unvirtuous cycle, which can generate what we label the wealth trap. A VUC index has been developed by us to capture the status quo of the finance-growth relationship. A cross country analysis for the US, UK and Euro area economies has been made in order to verify the validity of the index. A core variable is identified: the degree of financial innovation. This is an endogenous variable within the endogenous money/credit creation process; its identification is of crucial importance, as it is the key to full understanding of the finance-growth relationship and is the element of originality in this field of studies. The VUC index for all countries shows clearly the exponential effect of the degree of financial innovation over time. It is important for scholars and policymakers to understand the mechanism underpinning the finance-growth relationship and that it is their responsibility to return the economic system to what we will call the virtuous cycle
Pop-up Library at the University of Birmingham: Extending the reach of an Academic Library by taking 'The Library' to the students.
No full textAligning with student engagement and promotional strategies, a Pop-up Library project was initiated at the University of Birmingham. This involved setting up temporary, staffed stalls in different locations across campus in order to informally communicate with students and effectively take ‘the Library’ to them. This article discusses the planning and implementation of the Pop-up Library, including the rationale for the initiative. Details are given of the stalls themselves, the wide range of staff involved, the many locations trialled, the promotional materials used, and the ways in which the venture was advertised and subsequently evaluated. Results of a questionnaire used on the stalls are presented. Conclusions are drawn as to the effectiveness of the Pop-up Library as a communication tool, with particular emphasis on breaking down barriers between students and library staff, and proactively raising students’ awareness of the many ways Library Services can enhance their learning

Is There a Tomorrow for the Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Committee of the Regions (CoR)?
No full textThe main purpose of the two Committees is to engage participation from citizens in order to ensure that EU laws are geared to economic, social and regional conditions. In their core, the Committees are advisory bodies whose purpose is to give interest groups a formal say on EU legislative proposals. Moreover, the CoR has a legal mechanism (an action for annulment) to control the EU legislation. Thus far, there has been much criticism about the effectiveness of their work and the irrational costs that the two Committees produce. However, they represent the decrease of the democratic deficit, which seems to be one of the EU’s incurable diseases. In order to reach a conclusion on the necessity and effectiveness of the two Committees, this paper shall focus on their influence in the legislative procedure and try to determine whether the influence is visible and valuable. Finally, the paper shall assess the effectiveness of the single judicial instrument for control: an action for annulment that the CoR can bring before the CJEU. In accordance with the research results, the paper shall propose one of the possible solutions for the Committees’ future: status quo, the merger of the EESC and CoR into a more effective body or their complete abolition
Repairs to Jabba at Carnarvon in 2016 August

The dome azimuth drive had problems with a damaged gearbox output shaft. Peltiers failed in two detectors. The linear polariser failed resulting in almost zero ratio. Repairs were completed sufficiently to get the site back online and operational, but significant work is still required. The water-cooling loop can not be reactivated without major repairs to the spectrometer chassis. The data now show a strong low-frequency footprint caused by the use of a lens from a pair of polarising sun-glasses as a substitute polarising filter. Fibre-feed tests at Mount Wilson in 2016 September
Get PDFA Skywatcher HEQ5-Pro motorised mount and Starlight Express Superstar CCD guide camera with OpenCV image processing were tested in use as a solar tracker. The best performance in RA and declination respectively was 0.00 ± 6.15 arcseconds and −1.32 ± 6.62 arcseconds. This compares favourably with data captured on the standard BiSON mount in Carnarvon where the RA precision was measured to be 0.158 ± 8.434 arcseconds and declination −0.066 ± 3.823 arcseconds. The spectrometer was temporarily modified to accept a fibre-feed from the new mount. A low-frequency "footprint" was present in the data residuals that was not resolved, but otherwise results were as expected and comparable to the standard network performance. Get PDFThe overriding principle of the guidance provided by the RCUK Common Principles on Data Policy is that research data produced using public funds is in the common public good and should be made openly available in a timely manner; access should be available with as few restrictions as possible. With this as a central guiding principle, a data management plan is set out below. Best practices are set out by the UK’s Digital Curation Centre; this is a “world-leading centre of expertise in digital information curation with a focus on building capacity, capability and skills for research data management across the UK's higher education research community.” Ultimately data will be published in appropriate scientific journals that permit free and open access to the general public; this is compliance with RCUK’s requirements all partners involved in the project (including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) will agree to comply with common practices of data management, storage and management, as outlined in this document
Developing As A Teacher: A Study Of Nigerian Teachers
No full textThis paper presents insights gained from preparatory work in relation to a research about the early career experiences of teachers in Lagos State. The historic failings of Nigeria’s public school system have left Nigerian Education sector with challenges such as low teaching standards and lack of basic opportunities for learning. Lagos State is used as a representation of the Nigerian scenario. Eraut’s (2004) model of learning and context factors that affect professional growth is used to analyze the extent to which new teachers develop the attributes that support learning in the way they engage with work, socialize at work and see themselves in that process.
A background of the research is first presented and then followed by a brief characterization of research participants’ recruited so far. The issues arising from the recruitment of graduates into teaching in Lagos State schools is discussed and the paper ends with final reflections on pertinent concerns worth pondering about in order that efforts targeted at providing quality education in Lagos State stands a greater chance of success now and in the future
