The University of Birmingham Alma Migration

    No full text
At the start of August 2018, the University of Birmingham successfully went live with both Alma (migrating from Aleph) and the Primo newUI. The implementation project was run by a small team of Library and IT staff with a wider pool of Library functional experts cascading change management, training and testing to their staff. Frances Machell (Library Services) and Ed Craft (IT Services) talk about both organizational and technical aspects of the implementation, changes to service ownership and integration with multiple third-party applications

In Situ Catalytic Upgrading of Heavy Crude with CAPRI: Influence of Hydrogen on Catalyst Pore Plugging and Deactivation due to Coke

    No full text
Heavy crude oil is known to have low hydrogen-to-carbon ratios compared to light oil. This is due to the significant content of carbon-rich species such as resins and asphaltenes; hence their upgrading is commonly through carbon-rejection. However, carbon-rejection promotes rapid fouling of catalyst and pore plugging, yield low upgraded oil and consequently low fuel distillate fractions when distilled. The roles of hydrogen-addition on in situ catalytic upgrading was investigated at pre-established conditions (425 ºC, LHSV 11.8 h-1 and 20-40 bars) using a simulated fixed-bed reactor that mimic the annular sheath of catalyst (CAPRI) surrounding the horizontal producer well of the Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI) process. It was found that with H-addition, the upgraded oil American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity increased to about 5º compared to 3º obtained with N2 above 13º (THAI feed oil). The fuel distillate fractions increased to 62 % (N2, 20 bar), 65% (H2, 20bar) and 71.8% (H2, 30bar) relative to 40.6% (THAI feed oil); while the coke content of the catalyst after experiments are 35.3 wt% (N2) and 27.2 wt% (H2). It was also found that catalyst pore plugging and deactivation due to coke was significantly lower under hydrogen than with nitrogen; hence the catalyst is less susceptible to coke fouling when the upgrading reaction was carried out under hydrogen. The coke fouling further decreases with increasing hydrogen pressure while the API gravity of the upgraded oil marginally increase by 0.3º for every 10 bar increase in pressure from 20 to 40 bar

Little lights in a big world: missionary children and transnational religious migration

    Get PDF
They traversed continents, grew up bilingual, experienced family separations, were socially mobile, and crossed racial and cultural barriers; yet children of missionaries are seldom mentioned in general or religious histories. This project moves children's experience centre-stage to recover these marginalized voices through an interdisciplinary approach that includes history, anthropology, and human geography. Through archival research and oral history, it will increase our understanding of these global actors praised as 'great humanitarians' by some and accused as 'cultural imperialists' by others - and explore the role of children as cultural mediators with their own perspectives that intersect with issues of migration, race, culture, politics and faith

Conflict-related sexual violence and international law: a critical assessment of the preventing sexual violence initiative

    Get PDF
My research addresses how the international community goes about trying to prevent conflict-related sexual violence. With much of the focus on international law, I examine the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, put forth by the UK Government in 2012. I assess the legalistic approach to prevention and the progress that has been made over the last few decades

Local government financing during the electoral business cycle: analysing the role of intergovernmental political alignment on municipality budgets in Greece

    Get PDF
This paper examines the role of political alignment and the electoral business cycle on municipality revenues in Greece for the period 2003-2010. A panel dataset combining local and national elections with local budgets is used to run a fixed-effects econometric model. The findings suggest that municipalities which are politically aligned to the national government receive more funds in the run-up to elections. This is evidence of electoral considerations in the allocation of resources and calls for policy changes promoting greater fiscal decentralisation to reduce pork-barrelling and rent-seeking, as well as the dependency between the local and national government levels

The EU: sanctuary or fortress for refugees?

    Get PDF
In the context of the so-called "refugee crisis" starting in 2015, the European Union (EU) has had a rather inconsistent approach to refugee inflows. The EU simultaneously stressed its commitment to offering protection to people fleeing wars and persecutions as well as developed cooperation with non-European countries, such as Turkey or Afghanistan, in order to constrain migrants within countries where they are from or which they are crossing on their way to Europe. Researching these cooperation policies matters, not only because they have huge impacts on migrants' lives and might lead to further persecutions, torture or even death by preventing these people to reach Europe and thus, the protection that they deserve according to international treaties. It also matters because these policies are used by the EU to impose the burden of refugees on the poorest countries in the world, rather than sharing it with developed countries

Reimagining the Teaching of Land Law

    Get PDF
In September 2017, 45 land law enthusiasts (both teachers and practitioners) attended a workshop at the University of Birmingham to discuss current and emerging approaches to teaching this core area within the law degree. This report is a summary of the presentations and discussions that resulted from the day

Magnetic interactions in Fe1-xMxSb2O4, M = Mg, Co, deduced from Mössbauer spectroscopy.

    No full text
Magnesium- and cobalt- substituted FeSb2O4, of composition Fe1−xMgxSb2O4 (x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) and Fe0.25Co0.75Sb2O4 have been examined by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The complex spectra recorded from the magnetically ordered materials are interpreted in terms of two models in which the dominant magnetic interactions occur along the rutile-related chains of FeO6 octahedra in the magnetic structure of FeSb2O4. In materials of the type Fe1−xMgxSb2O4, the diamagnetic Mg2+ ions have no magnetic moment and behave as non-magnetic blocks which disrupt the magnetic interactions in the chains along the c-axis forming segments of iron-containing chains separated by Mg2+ ions. In Fe0.25Co0.75Sb2O4 the spectra are composed of components from different configurations of neighbouring Fe2+ and Co2+ ions
