    Get PDF
In this contribution fan choreographies are understood as coordinated mul¬timodal forms of communicative collective action. Fan choreographies in sports stadi¬ums owe their existence to the fact that a large on-site-audience is involved in the coor¬dinated execution of a communicative action. From a semiotic and media-theoretical perspective, this type of communication has to be categorized specifically. And it offers a wealth of conceptual and theoretical challenges that have so far received little atten¬tion in audience research. These include questions of authorship as well as the meaning of physical and social space

The article examines the historical mental functions of the hit song (\u27Schlager\u27) Für mich soll’s rote Rosen regnen by Hildegarde Neff (aka Hildegard Knef) using the categories \u27language\u27, \u27music\u27and \u27starimage\u27. The central semantics, in particular the concept of person, which in the interplay of text and context makes up the meaning of the \u27Schlager\u27, is worked out. Finally, it will be explained how these semantics are adapted to the present in the adaptation history of the song, in order to sound out the cultural reference space of the \u27Schlager\u27

Von der Schichtung zur Palimpsestierung: „Palimpsest“ als kulturwissenschaftlicher Grundbegriff

    Get PDF
The concept of the palimpsest has increasingly been promoted as a key concept in cultural studies. It captures the horizontal and vertical layers of space and time, and emphasises aspects of mixture, restructuring, disruption, destruction, and loss. Therefore, it replaces metaphors of layering, as recent methodological discourses in archaeology and literary studies attest to. At the same time, it opens new perspectives on cross-sectional topics not only in cultural studies but also in the context of spatial and urban theory as well as with regard to the tension between memory/remembering, discourse, and identity. To further operationalise the concept of the palimpsest within a wider academic framework, it is necessary, on the one hand, to distinguish between a material and a metaphorical notion of the term. On the other hand, it is essential to establish a concept of palimpsestisation as a mediating process category

Model Order Reduction with Dynamically Transformed Modes for Electrophysiological Simulations

    Get PDF
The numerical simulation of neuromuscular processes in skeletal muscles typically imposes high computational costs, resulting in the need for techniques to reduce these costs. One submodel in these types of multiphysics multiscale simulations is the electrophysiological model, describing the propagation of an action potential (AP) in a muscle fiber. Involved in the simulation of the propagation are two traveling waves, resulting in difficulties for classical model order reduction (MOR) techniques based on linear subspaces. Instead, we apply the nonlinear MOR method shifted Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (sPOD) to construct dynamically transformed reduced basis functions depending on time-dependent paths spanning the adaptive reduced ansatz space. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the constructed reduced ansatz space can accurately capture the dynamics of two fully separated wavefronts and reduce the degrees of freedom of the whole simulation. However, it cannot represent the activation of the AP in the center of the fiber and overlapping wave parts. The constructed reduced order model outperforms the high-dimensional full order model in terms of the computational costs while the accuracy is maintained and reaches speedup factors between 2 and 73 depending on the time discretization

Automated Identification of Wood Surface Defects Based on Deep Learning

    Get PDF
Wood plates are widely used in the interior design of houses primarily for their aesthetic value. However, considering its esthetical values, surface defect detection is necessary. The development of computer vision and CNN-based object detection methods has opened the way for wood surface defect detection process automation. This paper investigates deep-learning applications for automatic wood surface defect detection. It includes the evaluation of deep learning algorithms, including data generation and labeling, preprocessing, model training, and evaluation. Many adjustments regarding the dataset size, the model, and the modification of the neural network were made to evaluate the model\u27s performance in the specified challenge. The results indicate that modifications can increase the YOLOv5s performance in detection. The model with GCNet added and trained in 4800 images has achieved 88.1% of mAP. The paper also evaluates the time performance of models based on different GPU units. The results show that in A100 40GB GPU, the maximum time to process a wood plate is 2.2 seconds. Finally, an Active learning approach for the continual increase in performance while detecting with the smaller size of manual labeling has been implemented. After detecting 500 images in 5 cycles, the model achieved 98.8% of mAP. This scientific paper concludes that YOLOv5s modified model is suitable for wood surface defect detection. It can perform with high accuracy in real time. Moreover, applying the active learning approach can facilitate the labeling process by increasing the performance during detection

Tahrir Is Not a Square.

Summary. Inscriptions in the publicly accessible space of the city are an important research topic of sociolinguistics. Writings of all kind do not only shape urban space but also produce specific places which wouldn’t exist without them. The focus of this paper is how a space of urban protest is constructed; it will be shown how communicative forms of protest create place. The example discussed is a stencil which specifically refers to the Tahrir square in Cairo but at the same time accomplishes much more through interspatial, interdiscursive, and intermedial references. This stencil can be understood as part of an association of places which makes urban space describable as a territory of contradiction. The contribution provides a detailed ethnographic analysis of the use of stencils in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg and goes on to highlight possibilities of a sociolinguistic and semiotic analysis of urban territories of contradiction at large

Summary. This paper is a first exploration of folk-linguistic forms of phonetic transcription in the public space. This concerns patterns of use where the semiotic repertoire of phonetic transcription – including the use of phonetic symbols and bracketing, but also syllabic word division and lexicographic text structure – is transposed into a non-technical context of digital or physical public space, and where the intended purpose differs from linguistic traditions of visually representing speech sounds. To elucidate this practice, a corpus of 27 pictures was assembled in an ethnographic approach and analyzed from a semiotic and sociolinguistic perspective. A broad spectrum of semiotic phenomena was found, ranging from highly complex and quasi-professional transcriptions to minimalistic approaches. On this basis, a range of socio-stylistic factors that influence this variation (degree of professionalization, amount of planning, correctness) is proposed. Four categories of social meaning are distinguished (metalinguistic reflexivity, agenda setting, staged orality, deviance) that can be used for self-positioning in the use of folk-linguistic transcriptions in public spaces
