Get PDFDer Artikel „Die Infragestellung des Leibes durch Technik – Plädoyer für eine Reformulierung des Körperbegriffs“ setzt sich mit den transhumanistischen Visionen eines digitalen Daseins auseinander. Im Fokus steht hierbei die Frage, ob der Transhumanismus die Vorstellung eines verkörperten Subjekts aufgebe. Es zeigt sich einerseits, dass es auch für ein siliziumbasiertes Dasein essentiell ist, einen Körper zu haben und ein Körper zu sein. Andererseits wird mit Bezug auf einen theologischen Körperdiskurs die Irreduzibilität des leiblichen Seins thematisiert. Gegenüber dem theologischen Diskurs gelingt es dem Transhumanismus aber, ein Desiderat aufzudecken: Die Bezogenheit auf und das Durchdrungensein des Menschen von Technik. Dies veranlasst die Autorin dazu, das körperliche Relationalitätsverständnis auszuweiten und den Körperbegriff zu reformulieren.The article “The questioning of the body through technology – a plea for a reformulation of the concept of the body” deals with the transhumanist visions of a digital existence. The focus here lies on the question of whether transhumanism gives up the idea of an embodied subject. On the one hand, it shows that it is also essential for a silicon-based existence to have a body and to be a body. On the other hand, with reference to a theological discourse on the body, the irreducibility of physical existence is addressed. Compared to the theological discourse, however, transhumanism succeeds in uncovering a desideratum: the relatedness and permeation of human by technology. This prompts the author to broaden the understanding of corporeal relationality and to reformulate the concept of the body

Das Heft beschäftigt sich mit langfristigen Kommunikationsstrategien im Kontext der Endlagerung radioaktiver Abfälle. Semiotische Perspektiven werden darin mit historischen, religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Praktiken verknüpft und auf ihre Tragfähigkeit für extrem langfristige Kommunikationsaufgaben hin befragt. Die Neuauflage wird gerahmt von einem neuen Vor- und Nachwort. Die digitale Ausgabe enthält nur diese neu verfassten Texte. Feasibility of Offshore Wind Energy in Northern United Arab Emirates: Diurnal Wind Dynamics and Turbine Power Curve Analysis.
Get PDFThe United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been actively involved in organising and working on contributing towards achieving the decisions made at the COP28. The main aim has been exploring the options for a renewable energy mix. This study investigates the feasibility of offshore wind energy in the northern emirates of the UAE by analysing diurnal wind patterns, wind resource characterization, Weibull distribution curves, wind power density, and Wind turbine power curves across selected offshore locations in the emirate of Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah using long 12 plus years of wind data (2012 to 2024 April). Exploratory statistical analyses, such as wind rose, and Weibull distribution estimations, provided critical results for sustainable wind energy planning and development. The performance of four different wind turbines is valuated at these locations, analysing their wind power output over a 24-hour period. These findings, directly affect the design and operation of wind energy systems and contribute to understand the wind energy dynamics and turbine behavior, which will lay the foundation for optimising and sustainable development of Offshore wind energy systems in the northern emirates of UAE. The practical implications of this study highlight its potential to assist in decision-making processes for the government, invite the investors and further facilitate the development of sustainable energy solutions in the region, and invite academic communities to do further research on economic feasibility for the sustainable wind power development aligning with the UAE\u27s efforts to achieve renewable energy targets and mitigate climate change

Die Beiträge knüpfen an die aktuelle Forschung an, stellen neue Herausforderungen und Lösungen vor und führen einen Dialog über verschiedene Ansätze zur Analyse der Multimodalität von Comics. In unserer Einleitung zum Heft wollen wir diese „Multimodalität des Comics“ näher beleuchten und einige Erläuterungen zu unserem Verständnis dieses Begriffs und der Entwicklung des damit verbundenen Forschungsfeldes geben.This special issue on innovative methods in multimodal comics research brings together linguistic as well as inter- and transdisciplinary contributions engaging with the semiotic and multimodal wealth of comics, graphic novels, and other forms of visual narratives. The contributions connect to recent research with new challenges and solutions and engage in dialogue across various approaches to the multimodality of comics. In our introduction to the issue, we want to address this ‘multimodality of comics’ further and give some explanatory notes on our understanding of this concept and the development of the field of research connected to it
Italian Semiotics of Memory: Genealogies and Current Perspectives
Get PDFDer Artikel bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung einer Semiotik des Gedächtnisses in den letzten fünfzehn Jahren innerhalb der italienischen semiotischen Forschung. Dieses spezifische Teilgebiet gehört zur Kultursemiotik. Zunächst werden verschiedene semiotische Traditionen (generativ, interpretativ und vor allem kulturell) in Bezug auf das Verständnis von Erinnerung kurz umrissen. Dabei wird insbesondere auf Ecos Theoretisierung der Erinnerung und deren Parallelen zu Aleida Assmann eingegangen. Im Anschluss präsentiert der Artikel einige neuere semiotische Studien zu diesem Thema, die hauptsächlich, aber nicht ausschließlich, im Kontext eines Forschungszentrums an der Universität Bologna (TraMe) durchgeführt wurden. Seit 2009 widmet sich dieses Zentrum dem Studium der Erinnerung aus semiotischer und interdisziplinärer Perspektive. Erinnerung und Gedächtnis, insbesondere das kulturelle Gedächtnis, sind auch ein relevantes Untersuchungsfeld für mehrere italienische Semiotiker:innen, die verschiedene Aspekte eines semiotischen Ansatzes für das kulturelle Gedächtnis erforscht haben.The article gives an overview of the development – in Italian semiotic research of the last fifteen years – of a semiotics of memory, as a specific subfield of a semiotics of culture. After a brief account of how memory has usually been defined in the different semiotic traditions (generative, interpretive and, above all, cultural), and after a focus on Eco’s theorisation on memory (and its parallels with Aleida Assmann), the article presents some recent semiotic studies on the subject in Italy – mainly, but not exclusively, in the context of a research centre at the University of Bologna (TraMe), dedicated since 2009 to the study of memory from a semiotic and interdisciplinary perspective. Memory (especially cultural memory) has also been a relevant field of investigation for several Italian semiotic scholars that have explored different aspects related to a semiotic approach to cultural memory

Denn die Normalisierungswirkung heraufdämmender Selbstverständnisse in Zeiten der letzten Aufweichung ‚des Menschen‘ als präsupponierter Konstante lässt eine post-humanistische Entsicherung erahnen.This article will consider the question to what extent the proliferation of technologies for human enhancement, both inside and outside of Western civilization, seems to confirm transhumanism’s self-perception as an anthropology for contemporary society. In this context, the argument is established that other discourses are required to think about the anthropological implications of aforementioned tendencies. Modeling and Simulation of a Digital Twin for SCADA-Based Industrial Pumping Systems
Get PDFThis paper presents the development and simulation of a digital twin model for an industrial cooling-water pumping system operated under a SCADA environment. The model was built in MATLAB/Simulink and includes pumps, pipelines, and valve behavior using real design data. Simulation results were compared with actual SCADA measurements, showing a difference of 6.6–10%, which confirms good agreement between the model and real system. The study shows how a digital twin can be used to analyze system performance, verify instrument accuracy, and improve control logic before implementation. It also outlines the steps for data collection, PLC–SCADA connection, and performance validation. The developed model provides a useful base for future predictive monitoring, design improvement, and real-time optimization in industrial automation
An Inverse Boundary Value Problem for the Porous Medium Equation: Numerical Methods
Get PDFInverse boundary value problems aim to infer a material\u27s properties from boundary measurements. This article addresses an inverse problem for the porous medium equation, focusing on determining two coefficients characterizing the medium\u27s diffusivity and porosity. As this problem has mainly been discussed in theory, a main contribution is the development of efficient numerical approaches for solving this problem. Based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map\u27s injectivity, the diffusion coefficient\u27s inversion can be related to the Calder\\u27on problem, leveraging its favorable properties. A key advantage of the proposed method is the decoupled inversion approach: After inferring the diffusion coefficient, the original problem only has to be solved for the porosity coefficient which can be done using a Bayesian inversion approach. This article lays the foundation for developing numerical methods solving the considered problem, highlighting the benefits of the decoupled strategy. Numerical frameworks are established for both the classical and Bayesian inversion of the diffusion coefficient. In the classical setting, noise-free measurements lead to a well-posed inverse problem. For noisy data, the Bayesian inversion maintains the problem\u27s well-posedness
