Negative and positive mechanisms for coping with grief
No full textEmotional distress is defined as a negative emotional reaction that individuals experience after a traumatic life event. Grief is often described as a type of emotional distress one feels when something or someone they care for is taken away. While loss affects people in different ways, individuals can utilize both positive and negative coping mechanisms as a way to work through the stages of grief. The present study looked at different coping mechanisms that individuals have. The results were not significant for younger children reporting more sleep disturbances than older children and adults. F (2,73) = 0.081, p\u3e 0.05. The results were significant between the parents and children on the importance of spirituality and coping. F(2, 73) =10.01, p\u3c 0.05. Specifically, parents relied more on religious activities than younger children
Relationship between the obsessional beliefs questionnaire and the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale in patients in intensive residential treatment
No full textThis study examined the relationship between the changes in Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale-Self Report (YBOCS-SR) and Obsessional Beliefs Questionnaire-44 (OBQ-44) scores at admission in adult patients (N = 42) with obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD) from a residential treatment program. It was hypothesized that the YBOCS-SR total score would be correlated to the total OBQ-44 score as well as to each of the three subscales of the OBQ-44; Responsibility/Threat Estimation, Perfectionism/Certainty, and Importance/Control of Thoughts. The results showed significant correlation in both YBOCS-SR and total OBQ-44 scores and YBOCS-SR and the subscales Responsibility/Threat Estimation and Perfectionism/Certainty. There was no significant relationship between the YBOCS-SR with the Importance/Control of thoughts subscale. These relationships indicate that the YBOCS-SR, which measures symptom severity, correlates to obsessional beliefs of someone with OCD as well as that obsessional beliefs about responsibility and threat estimation and perfectionism and certainty are related to symptom severity

New Woman Writers: Authority and the Body
No full textThis collection of essays contributes to scholarship on the emerging voices of women writers during the fin de siecle. These \u27New Woman\u27 writers created a distinctly different body of literature that reflected their concerns about women\u27s limited role in society. The essays cover a range of authors, shedding light on the ways New Woman texts also often offer new and progressive portrayals of women\u27s authority as connected to strong physical bodies. These scholars highlight how New Woman endings re-envision the marriage plot, self destruction and even empowerment through pain. Decreasing negative behavior of an autistic child by use of picture schedules
No full textThe purpose of the intervention was to decrease the student\u27s negative behaviors from 10-15 tantrums to one or two a day by using a picture schedule. The study would determine if by using a picture schedule this student\u27s negative behaviors would decrease. The strategy had not been used with the student previously. The research question Does using a picture schedule decreasing negative behavior of an autistic student? was studied in the author\u27s class with a single autistic student. The author of this paper considered it to be the best tool to use with this particular student
Relationship between childhood abuse and substance abuse in a predominantly urban adolescent population
No full textResearch has suggested that there is a relationship between childhood abuse and substance abuse. This report examined this relationship among a predominantly urban adolescent population. It also explored the differences in childhood abuse and substance abuse between genders. Psychological evaluations of both juvenile delinquency cases and CHIPS (child in need of protection and services) cases, were reviewed. This archival study demonstrated no significant relationship between childhood abuse and substance abuse within this population. It showed that female adolescents were more likely to have reported cases of childhood abuse than male adolescents, but that there were no significant differences in substance abuse between genders. The population measured, along with the sample size differences between genders, could have contributed to these results. Therefore, all of these areas need further exploration, as the data obtained in this study may not be applicable to the general population
