Effects of Spelling by Analogy on the Phonological Awareness of a Child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech
This case study research examined the effects of spelling by analogy on the phonological awareness of a first grader with oral and verbal apraxia, a disorder generally referred to as childhood apraxia of speech. An intervention using a variety of activities focused on spelling by analogy was provided over a six week period. It was hypothesized that these instructional methods would increase the participant\u27s phonological awareness and thus his word identification, decoding, and spelling skills as evidenced by pre-and posttest comparisons. Following the completion of 12 hour-long tutoring sessions, post-assessment findings revealed increases in spelling, phonological awareness, reading levels and strategy use, as well as sound and sight word identification. Recommendations for home and school are included
Impact of Web 2.0 applications on student test scores
The purpose of this study was to implement a technological resource for the purpose of providing a vault of study resources for students to prepare for Pre-Algebra, Science, Social Studies, and Communication Arts tests/quizzes. This study utilized a Wikispaces site to provide students and parents added resources to review daily content covered in core academic classes, ask further questions about the material, and prepare students for tests/quizzes by providing links to online flashcards, practice tests, and study guides. The research question of this study was: Can the implementation of a Wikispaces site as a valuable source of resources that students and parents can utilize to study for tests and quizzes improve the test scores of students? I undertook this study after watching my students for a period of weeks and evaluating what I saw to be the biggest struggles they are faced in their core classes. I saw that students enjoy being on the computer and most of the students enjoy using social media sites such as Facebook on a daily basis. I also saw that the most anxiety students faced in regard to their classes was when tests/quizzes were coming up. Students didn’t know how to focus their attention on the important concepts when studying for these tests/quizzes. I have had some experience with using a Wikispaces website at my past school placement and decided to do some further research into how I could incorporate this website to provide resources to help students prepare for tests/quizzes and lessen anxiety. While this study included only a small number of special education students the results could have benefits to all students. If the website were successful more students could have access to the study resources or individual teachers could be shown the results and encouraged to implement the use of their own Wikispaces site in their classrooms. I also see the implementation of this study to be helpful for parents. It may help parents stay updated on individual homework assignments, have a calendar for upcoming tests/quizzes, and stay knowledgeable about what their children are studying in their classes at school
College Geometry Using The Geometer’s Sketchpad
From two authors who embrace technology in the classroom and value the role of collaborative learning comes College Geometry Using The Geometer’s Sketchpad. The book\u27s truly discovery-based approach guides readers to learn geometry through explorations of topics ranging from triangles and circles to transformational, taxicab, and hyperbolic geometries. In the process, readers hone their understanding of geometry and their ability to write rigorous mathematical proofs.https://digitalcommons.stritch.edu/facultybooks/1012/thumbnail.jp
Word Study and Comprehension Techniques on Expository Text
The following research examined the use of word study and graphic organizes on a student with a specific learning disability. The student participating in this study has completed the 5th grade and has received special education support in the areas of speech and language and reading and writing expression. This study took place over the summer of 2010. The research was completed in a period of 6 weeks with intervention occurring for one hour and a half two times a week
The Impact of Looping in Middle School: Evaluating the effects of looping on student academic motivation and attitudes toward school
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of a looping program, serving grades seven and eight, at a middle school, located in northeastern Wisconsin on teachers, administrators, students, and parents utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods. It measures the impact of looping on students\u27 academic motivation and attitudes toward school and school activities, identifies teachers\u27 perceptions of the benefits and drawbacks of looping for both students and teachers, and analyzes parents\u27 perceptions of the looping experience.https://digitalcommons.stritch.edu/facultybooks/1010/thumbnail.jp

Effects of Repeated Intervention Strategies in Phonological Awareness and Reading Comprehension
Literacy interventions are vital to the academic success of a child who is falling behind academically. This study addresses the question: Does routine and repeated intervention strategies in phonological awareness and reading increase a student\u27s comprehension and reading fluency? This study contains one participant. The participant is a ten year old fourth grade African-American female who will be entering the fifth grade in the upcoming school year. She was diagnosed as cognitively delayed at the age of seven and has been receiving special education services since then. The student was pre and post tested using various norm referenced assessments that measured reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, word identification and phonological awareness skills. Repeated strategies were used over a course of the study. Results revealed that the participant\u27s reading skills improved
Technology improving writing
Does using a word processing tool, such as the NEO 2, positively or negatively affect the length and quality of students’ writing? The students in my fourth grade class produced short writing assignments and tended to hurry to complete their assignments. These students had access to NEO 2 word processors and in my experience I found they were very excited at the prospect of typing or keyboarding on them. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of the NEO would inspire students to create longer, more detailed and higher quality writing. The study results were expected to show that using a NEO increased the quality of the writing by the participants when compared to work prior to use of the NEO. The study was significant not only for the education community, but specifically to my school district. The district was interested in improving student writing and had invested a significant amount of money on NEO 2 word processors for the fourth grade classrooms. This research helped to determine if there was cause to purchase more for other grades to further improve student writing
Effects of dialogue and journaling on reading comprehension
Developing readers with independent comprehension skills is no easy task. Nor is it a one size- fits-all approach. While working with students, especially those who have reading disabilities, it is important that teachers are aware of the multi-faceted process in which children learn. This process can be through traditional education, however quality instruction encompasses more than just the traditional methods. It is crucial that teachers adjust their instruction and tailor it to the needs of all students. The purpose of this chapter is to define a theoretical perspective of the deep understanding that teachers must have of reading instruction and the environment in which it is delivered. First, there is an explanation of how to best address the needs of students in the classroom. Second, the findings of several research articles that support those beliefs are reviewed. The final segment covers how this information guided this intervention plan
Influence of Vocabulary Pre-Teaching on Classroom Read Alouds With English Language Learner Kindergarten Students
This action research study focused on determining what affect pre-teaching vocabulary words from classroom read alouds would have a students\u27 vocabulary acquisition. The study compared incidental exposure to words in read alouds to explicitly teaching words in read alouds. The researcher hypothesized that students would gain vocabulary knowledge when words were taught prior to reading books with the target vocabulary words. This was a pre and post test experimental design that lasted eight weeks. Data was collected using two different vocabulary tests designed by the researcher. In addition, data was collected on students retellings of the read aloud stories. The results proved that students can learn vocabulary from read alouds. In particular it showed that girls acquired more vocabulary through explicit instruction during a read aloud. This action research suggests that more research is needed regarding gender learning as well as vocabulary acquisition with the use of literature particularly for English Language Learners
