Effects of bilingual intervention on alphabet knowledge and emergent literacy skills

    Get PDF
This research study explored the effects of bilingual intervention on the development of alphabet knowledge and emergent literacy skills in bilingual kindergarten students. The study consisted of 15 African- American or Hispanic participants’ ages five and six, 7 of which were part of the intervention group. The intervention group received explicit bilingual literacy instruction for six weeks. Three major findings were 1) student participants experienced increased alphabet knowledge in their first and second language 2) students demonstrated growth in emergent literacy skills in their first language and 3), the students’ first language development was not negatively affected by the bilingual intervention in the second language. The results indicate that explicit bilingual intervention is beneficial for the development of alphabet knowledge and emergent literacy skills

    Art integration, mathematics, and behavior

Eliciting student enjoyment and positive disposition are critical components to effective instruction and high academic achievement in any elementary classroom. Many educators struggle with connecting students to their learning, especially in mathematics. This study focused on integrating art into the classroom, specifically in the core content area of mathematics. The study sought to examine the effects of art integration on students’ dispositions, students’ enjoyment of mathematics, and students’ academic achievement. Sixteen students in a K5 Kindergarten classroom with one primary classroom teacher participated in this study. Throughout the 6-week research period, students participated in art and non-art activities correlated to a mathematics objective during the “Apply” portion of the “Launch, Explore, Summarize, Apply” instructional model. To measure academic achievement and student enjoyment, students participated in daily exit assessments and daily enjoyment surveys on the art or non-art activity. Parents and guardians also participated in a pre- and post-test survey about their students’ dispositions towards mathematics, art, and school. The results of this study show that students’ exit assessment scores increased when connected to an art activity, and students’ dispositions positively increased over the intervention period as observed by their parents and guardians. Results also consistently indicate that students enjoyed mathematics on a high level throughout the intervention period. Implications for future research include lengthening the study over the academic year to determine art integration’s lasting effect, balancing the number of art and non-art activities to give a true and equalized sense of which activities were influential, and to create improved student surveys that better reflect students’ enjoyment

Experiences of transgender individuals in various stages of transition

The objective of this paper is to provide an extensive review on a variety of issues relevant to transgender individuals. I conducted interviews to gather valuable information from these participants regarding their experiences with their gender identity. I conducted structured telephone interviews with 22 participants ranging in age from 20 to 62 years old. Eight individuals identified as female to male (FTM) transgender, 5 identified as male to female (MTF) transgender, 2 identified as gender queer, 3 identified as androgynous/androgyne, 1 identified as trans masculine, 1 identified as non-gendered/third gendered, 1 identified as gender queer/trans-male and 1 identified as hermaphrodite. Transgender individuals generally are satisfied with the results of surgery and hormone therapy and express feeling more comfortable with their bodies post-treatment. The experience of getting to the point where they have access to hormone therapy or surgery is what can be stressful, because of the time it takes as well as the professionals they encounter who are not always understanding of their situation. Conclusions. It is important for transgender individuals to have access to competent and educated health professionals, whether they are therapists, gynecologists, or general practitioners. By interacting with professionals who are familiar with transgender issues or who simply know how to work with diverse populations, transgender people will be able to transition in a way that is less stressful

Effect of comprehension intervention on reading achievement through social studies content

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of content-based intervention on comprehension. The participant was one 3rd grade student from a charter school in a large urban city. The student engaged in twelve ninety minutes sessions over a period of four weeks. The student practiced repeated reading and identifying comprehension components to increase recall and comprehension of social studies text. The student practiced metacognitive and self-monitoring strategies to promote comprehension. While there was a significant increase in the student’s comprehension, the qualitative data demonstrates potential challenges for a student to overcome behavioral issues and focus on academic achievement as well as demonstrating that students with behavioral challenges do not respond to intervention the same way as other students in special education

Effects of Phonemic Awareness Instruction on a Struggling Emergent Reader

    No full text
Phonemic awareness is fundamental to reading skills acquisition, and refers to the ability to notice, think about, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words (McIntyre, Protz, & McQuarrie, 2008). This study examined the effectiveness of phonemic awareness instruction on a struggling, emergent reader. For six weeks, the participant in the study met with the researcher four times a week for thirty minutes. The researcher used systematic instruction in early literacy skills, letter and sound identification, small-word decoding, and other phonemic awareness tasks to help the student improve his emerging reading skills. After analyzing the pre-and post-test assessments, the researcher concluded that the intervention was effective in improving the participant\u27s phonemic awareness development

Evolution of amusement in Southeastern Wisconsin

    No full text
The element that made Milwaukee different from the rest of the country though, was that through the amusement park experience, immigrants had their ethnic identity reinforced thus creating an early manifestation of ethnic pluralism. In other cities across the country during this same period there was more of an assimilation to an American culture taking place rather than encouraging people to hold on to their culture. Milwaukee businessmen seeing this, developed parks similar to those across the country, but helped encourage both a pride in their ethnic background and their new American home. So in essence, amusement parks in southeastern Wisconsin reflected an early manifestation of ethnic pluralism that was used by entrepreneurs to develop a successful business model by offering a wide range of entertainment, new technological advanced attractions, family friendly park layouts and easy access through transportatio

Spirit of outdoor activity: exploring the link between creativity, spirituality, and the natural environment

    No full text
On a universal level, various theories suggest an innate human-nature relationship. Although there are many benefits to being in the natural environment, the universal relationship has not translated to humans spending time outdoors. Therefore, the present exploratory study focused on creativity and spirituality as individual factors related to outdoor activity through four research questions: 1) what is the nature of the relationship between creativity and outdoor activity 2) what is the nature of the relationship between spirituality and outdoor activity 3) are creativity and spirituality two overlapping factors that relate to outdoor activity and 4) what effect does age, gender, ethnicity, and education have on the relationship between spirituality, creativity, and outdoor activity? One hundred and one participants volunteered to complete the Creative Personality Inventory, Spirituality Inventory, and Outdoor Activity Questionnaire. The results indicate a significant correlation with spirituality, more specifically transcendence, and outdoor activity. In addition, creativity and spirituality were overlapping factors that accounted for a significant amount of variance in outdoor activity levels. This was found to be true when controlling for age and gender. These results add empirical evidence that has been lacking from the theories on creativity, spirituality, and the natural environment, and suggest individual differences in the human-nature relationship

Effects of Explicit Comprehension Strategy Instruction on a Struggling First Grade Reader

This is a case study involving a six year old male. The researcher sought to determine if explicit comprehension strategy instruction, coupled with teacher modeling, guided small group practice, individual practice, and metacognition of the comprehension strategies making text to self, text to text, and text to world connections would facilitate improvement in overall comprehension skills, knowledge of reading strategies, transfer to individual use, and promote reading self-efficacy in a student who was in need of Tier 2 reading interventions

This is a case study involving a ten-year-old male. The researcher sought to determine if explicit comprehension strategy instruction in conjunction with teacher modeling, guided small group practice, and individual practice in the comprehension strategies of identifying text structure and using graphic organizers would facilitate improvement in overall comprehension skills, knowledge of reading strategies, transfer to individual use, and promote retention of information in a student who was in need of Tier 2 reading interventions
