The Effect of At-Home Parental Involvement on Early Childhood Attendance
Get PDFThis study documents the effects of at-home parental involvement on average attendance in a four-year-old kindergarten classroom. Previous research suggests that there are six main factors that affect attendance. One such factor is parental involvement with homework assignments. An action research was designed to increase student attendance averages by implementing a weekly parent-child homework activity. The results of the action research suggest that there is no correlation between parental involvement with homework and attendance. However, future research is recommended by the researcher in part to unforeseen and uncontrolled variables that may have affected this study\u27s results

The Effects of Explicit Adult Guided Instruction on Vocabulary Acquisition of Three to Four Year old Children with Disabilities
Get PDFThis research study examined the effects of explicit adult guided instruction on vocabulary acquisition in preschoolers with disabilities through daily interventions and an environment in which the participants were immersed in the vocabulary. The research question guiding this study was: What are the effects of explicit adult guided instruction on vocabulary acquisition in preschoolers with disabilities? Seven children ages 3 to 4 were selected to participate in a four week intervention with 7-10 minute daily literacy interventions combined with an immersive vocabulary classroom setting that revisited the target vocabulary words. Eight vocabulary words were introduced throughout the intervention: four nouns representing animals and four verbs that corresponded to how those animals moved. Two words, one noun and one verb, were explicitly taught per week through various multimodal activities including: scientific book read aloud, videos, kinesthetic movement of the verbs, fine motor activities, and music. The results demonstrated that all participants made gains in verbal and nonverbal language use involving the eight target vocabulary words. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that children with disabilities be given vocabulary instruction using adult guided multimodal lessons
Eating Disorder Risk: The Role of Attachment to Parents and Attachment to God
Get PDFThis study’s purpose was to examine links between women in insecurely attached families and their endorsement of eating disorder behaviors, as compared to women in securely attached families. This study also examined whether a strong attachment to God or an individuals’ ethnicity served as protective factors from eating disordered behavior among individuals identified as belonging to insecurely attached families. One hundred ten women volunteered to take an online survey via the website Qualtrics. Attachment was assessed using the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-RS) scale (Fraley, Heffernan, & Vicary, 2011). Individuals’ risk for developing an eating disorder was assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26; Garner, Olmsted, Bohr, & Garfinkel, 1982). Ethnicity was assessed using a demographic survey, and participants’ attachment to God was assessed by using the Attachment to God Inventory (Beck & Macdonald, 2004). It was hypothesized that female participants with an insecure parental attachment would endorse more eating disorder symptoms than females with secure parental attachment. Ethnicity and a strong attachment to God were expected to act as protective factors against eating disorder symptomology in individuals in insecurely attached families. Results showed there was no significant relationship between parental attachment and endorsement of eating disorder symptoms. However, results indicated that one’s attachment to God, when analyzed in conjunction with parental attachment, is a better predictor of eating disorder symptoms than when analyzing parental attachment alone. Results also revealed that the only difference between minorities and non-minorities in terms of the study variables was their attachment to God, with minorities having a less avoidant insecure relationship with God as compared to non-minorities
Curricular and Teaching Strategies that Increase Desire to Provide Culturally Competent Care in Baccalaureate Nursing Students: An Integrated Review
Get PDFCultural competence is a component of the 2008 Essentials of Baccalaureate Nursing Education. Nationally, graduation exit testing has found that students continue to score as culturally aware, rather than culturally competent. This twelve article review of research literature identified curricular approaches and teaching strategies that have been found to create a student\u27s desire to provide and demonstrate cultural competent in practice. Findings supported the continuance of a thread of culture content within all nursing theory and clinical courses through inclusion of local or international, live or simulated service-learning. To facilitate contemplation of their progression journey of cultural awareness to competence, students should maintain a cultural activities self-reflection journal at all levels to support graduates as they transition into their professional practice
An integrative review of evidenced-based leadership behaviors of nurse managers
No full textPurpose: To determine evidence-based leadership behaviors that positively influence nurse managers\u27 performance outcomes in the acute care setting. Design: Integrative literature review Methods: CINAHL and MEDLINE databases were searched 2004-2014 using leadership behaviors of nurse managers , and nurse manager performance outcomes terms for research in English, peer-reviewed journals meeting this review\u27s purpose. Findings: Ten studies support the use of transformational leadership behaviors by nurse managers to positively influence their performance outcomes. Conclusions: Strengthening nurse manager leadership skills will be a positive step in addressing the challenges of an emerging shortage of registered nurses. Relevance to Nursing Education: Findings are relevant in determining the needed content of nursing education to support nurse managers in becoming effective, transformational leaders
The effects of an evidence-based intervention with English language learners in phonological awareness
Get PDFThis research study examined the effects of an evidence-based intervention in phonological awareness with first grade English language learners (ELLs). The study had 6 participants ranging in age from six to seven. Of the participants, three were ELL and the other were native English speakers, or non-ELL. The intervention group received explicit phonological awareness instruction for eight weeks. There were two major findings from the research: all students experienced growth in their phonological awareness and ELLs made similar gains in their phonological awareness as their non-ELL peers. The results indicate that evidence-based phonological awareness interventions are valuable for ELLs and non-ELLs
The effects of explicit instruction of predictions and inference making on the reading comprehension of an elementary-school student
Get PDFThis study examined how the explicit instruction of prediction and inference making skills affects overall reading comprehension. The participant was one third-grade student who was diagnosed with dyslexia. She required skills to overcome the decoding and word recognition challenges that prevented her from comprehending texts. Over the course of four weeks, the participant attended 55-minute sessions in which areas of reading comprehension, especially inference making, were assessed. She also received extensive modeling and guided practice in various comprehension strategies. Results for the study show that explicit instruction of prediction and inference making increases overall reading comprehension
