An exploration of best practices in prelicensure nursing education: Integrating physical and mental health concepts

    Get PDF
Nurses frequently encounter patients with physical and mental health comorbidities and must be prepared to deliver appropriate care. The purpose of this integrated literature review was to explore best practices in prelicensure/undergraduate nursing education, for the integration of physical and mental health nursing skills. Seven quantitative and eight qualitative research studies were evaluated for this project, fourteen of which were published between 2012-2015 (one older study was included, from 1999). Nineteen additional articles and white papers related to concept and skills integration provided background and context. Gestalt theory was used to guide and interpret this exploration. A broad range of initiatives were found to improve mental health concept integration within undergraduate curricula. When combined, they suggest a comprehensive guide for the integration of physical and mental health concepts in prelicensure nursing education. The goal of prelicensure nursing education is to prepare nurses to practice competently in a variety of health settings; this includes addressing both physical and mental health needs with each patient encounter. Integrating these concepts during prelicensure education prepares nurses for this practice reality

The results of breathwork on traumatized African American male juveniles

    Get PDF
African Americans have a history of profound trauma in America. More specifically, the African American man’s trauma has been marginalized, not only in his own cultural context, but within the patriarchal constructs of dominant culture. This, coupled with institutional racism, has allowed African American men to become a target of the criminal justice system. To date, African American men have staggering rates of incarceration and lead all ethnic groups in recidivism. While African American males comprise 6.5 percent of the U.S. population, as a whole, they comprise 40 percent of the incarcerated prison system (Mauer, 1999; Alexander, 2010). Tie in experiences of the intergenerational trauma of slavery with the social constructs of male identity and the African American male felon’s concerns are institutionally marginalized and made invisible (Alexander, 2010; Leary, 2005; Anderson, 2008). The vast majority of youth in this study have backgrounds rooted in areas of systemic poverty and have faced various degrees of trauma throughout their life. It is this researcher’s hypothesis that breathwork offers a way for African American felons to manage emotions, feel empowered, have ownership of their lives, and contribute constructively to their families and communities. This nonverbal therapeutic technique consists of deep and rapid breathing to facilitate the process of healing psychic trauma rooted outside conscious awareness. This study seeks to answer the question: Can breathwork aid African American male felons to manage emotions, feel a sense of control over institutional racism, effects of incarceration, and poverty after being incarcerated? Analysis of the data will include basic demographic information, and the following instruments: Holmes Rahe Life Event Scale (Colbert, 2003), Zung Self Rating Depression Scale (Colbert, 2003), NOVACO Anger Inventory (Colbert, 2003) (short form). The researcher will use a one-tailed t-test to analyze the data

Effects on reading comprehension using a four square vocabulary design

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine if utilizing a four square vocabulary box when presented with difficult science text would improve student reading comprehension. Three high school students who receive special education services participated in the eight week study. Participants received explicit instruction from the author on how to use a four square vocabulary box when reading expository text. In addition, participants were presented with an overview of lesson objectives, background knowledge was introduced, comprehension of text was assessed, and vocabulary was reviewed. Pretest and posttests were given to indicate if the use of a four square vocabulary box would increase student reading comprehension. Results indicated student reading levels did not increase. This study raises the question about ways to instruct students with disabilities on how to understand difficult vocabulary found in expository text and if more practice time is needed for students to improve reading comprehension

The effects of phonological awareness based centers to enhance literacy skills in kindergarten

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using phonological awareness centers to facilitate development of kindergarten students’ phonological awareness skills. The research question asked: How will facilitating phonological awareness centers make kindergarten students better readers? The research design consisted of quantitative pre/post assessments, small group study research design. The findings/results of the action research confirmed my hypothesis which was that the kindergarten students would significantly show growth in reading skills after 7 weeks of using phonological awareness centers. The fact that the students were able to show significant improvements in seven of the eight subcategories on the PASS assessment verifies that the students were able to increase their understanding of phonological awareness skills. The significance/implications of the research shows that teachers need to have access to continuous effective instructional activities to help their students become more competent with the use of phonemes to strengthen their reading skills

Strategic audit of a growth plan: a case study of a national real estate development company

    No full text
This research project is comprised of a detailed analysis of the strategic growth plan of a national real estate organization located in the Midwest to be called Mainland Properties Company, Inc. In 2013, the company announced a strategic plan to increase the number of apartment units developed annually by over 200% by the year 2018. The analysis was complete to answer the research question “Are the current strategic initiatives appropriate and being implemented successfully to accomplish the organization’s growth plans?” The goal of the project was to determine the effectiveness of the strategic planning process and discuss the appropriateness of the current strategic initiatives. To ascertain the appropriateness of these initiatives, an audit of the organization was conducted. This involved an evaluation of all aspects of Mainland’s internal environment and took into consideration many external factors. This environment includes human resources, development, construction, market research and information technology; the many departments that work together to accomplish the entitlements and permitting of the thousands of apartment units that Mainland develops each year. The audit of these departments was used to measure the health of the organization relative to each department’s ability to create value and enhance the competitive advantage of the organization. The research methodology used was primarily qualitative which allows for a thorough description of the situation. Internal data such as published strategic plans and major issues documents were reviewed as a primary data source. As a current employee of the organization, the researcher was also able to utilize personal observational research to formulate an analysis if the health of the organization. An ex post facto study was utilized in the evaluation of the organizations culture and productivity. The main performance areas researched were recruitment, retention, productivity, profitability, growth and reputation. The thematic analysis methodology was used to decipher a multitude of data gathered by the human resources department of this organization. The data is gathered through various means, including weekly anonymous surveys, challenge meetings and employee interviews. The organization uses this information in considering strategic choices and in the evaluation of the strategic plan. It is also extremely valuable in the evaluation of the organizations culture. Additional, secondary statistical data was collected from reliable publicly available sources. A thematic analysis framework provided a flexible means to describe patterns within the data set and assisted with determination of what is relevant to the research question. The researcher also employed personal judgement and assumptions in the research analysis. The data analyses lead to the selection of an alternative action that recommended reduction of the growth plan goals and incorporation additional strategic initiatives to strengthen the foundation of the organization. The critical results that steered the researcher to the alternative action included the inability to meet some of the organizations yearly goals, an indication of an employee retention problem, a growing negativity potentially linked to struggles with work life balance and a disconnection between strategic management and the information technology systems in the organization. The resulting recommendations for the organization were to improve retention and increase efficiency. Improving retention can be achieved through a culture of transformational leadership and enhanced employee engagement. Efficiency can be increased through effective use of technology and continuous improvement efforts. The culmination of the research project is an argument for an organization to balance the needs of the employees with the needs of the organization. Engagement and development of personnel should be in alignment with an organization’s strategic plan. This alignment will create a cohesive work environment for employees and contribute to overall success. Strong leadership can help energize amazing results even in challenging times. Mainland Properties has accumulated a significant amount of wisdom and know-how in the real estate development industry. The organization must continue to strive for improvement and increased efficiency. Their continued expertise will be invaluable in their pursuit of becoming a major national contender in real estate development

Catholic Epistles, Hebrews, and Revelation : introducing the New Testament

    No full text
For many Christians and believers of all faith traditions, the nine books explored in The Catholic Epistles, Hebrews, and Revelation are the least-known parts of the New Testament. This book also presents eleven even less-known, important extracanonical writings produced during roughly the same period as those included in the Bible. Scholz explores themes of authorship, audience, style, and context to offer a broad sense of the history, theology, and culture that formed early Christians. With review and discussion questions and helpful content summaries, he offers fresh insights into the turbulent years following the deaths of the first generation of believers.https://digitalcommons.stritch.edu/facultybooks/1007/thumbnail.jp
