Aim: In adolescence, behaviour problems and the difficulties of managing them by parents and teachers emerge as two of the most frequent referral reasons to primary health care (PHC) and mental health services. Adopting a systemic perspective, we intend to present a program of family and multifamily intervention, with families and adolescents (who present behaviour problems which do not fulfil diagnostic criteria for behaviour disorder or oppositional defiant disorder), based on the results of a pilot intervention carried out in PHC. Method: This is a retrospective study that resorted to documental records analysis procedures of two types of intervention: a group of adolescents (N = 8) aged between 13 and 16 years old (M = 14.5, SD = 0.93) and a group of their parents (N = 16) (mother: M = 45.6, SD = 6.97; father: M = 47.9, SD = 6.83). Results: The interventions with adolescents and families, in combination, have shown therapeutic gains in the whole sample (100%), particularly in terms of decreasing behaviour problems at home and at school, cessation of pharmacological therapy and academic achievement. Conclusion: The program of family and multifamily intervention appears itself as an effective helping approach, matching therapeutic results and profitability of resources.

Factors Associated With Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Literature Review

Aim: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional bowel condition, which has substantial impact on quality of life and use of healthcare services. Patients often report using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for symptom management despite limited evidence to support its use. Psychological factors have been shown to be important in both influencing CAM use and as avenues of intervention to assist in managing IBS symptoms. Therefore, this review assessed prevalence of and psychological factors associated with CAM use by people with IBS. Method: Five electronic databases (including AMED, EMBASE and PsychINFO) were searched for studies that examined both the extent of and the reasons for CAM use. Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: Prevalence of CAM use ranged from 9% to 38%. CAM use was associated with psychosocial factors, including concerns about conventional medical care (i.e., the perceived harmful effects of medication, perception that conventional medicine had failed, and lack of satisfaction with conventional care) and anxiety. Conclusion: These findings identify psychological factors associated with CAM use which could be targeted through psychologically oriented management strategies for those affected with IBS

Posttraumatic Growth in the Aftermath of Trauma: A Literature Review About Related Factors and Application Contexts

    Get PDF
Aim: In the face of one traumatic event, individuals may perceive, along with the inherent negative responses, a number of positive changes, which reveal posttraumatic growth. This concept has increased its expression in literature over the years, and it has been recognized that people exposed to highly traumatic events, such as bereavement, war combat, disasters, disease or other stressful or life-threatening events, may perceive positive changes from the struggling with those events. Thus, this literature review aims at exploring the definition of posttraumatic growth, associated factors and application contexts. Method and Results: Electronic databases were used to search the relevant literature. Based on the analysis of empirical data, were found several studies that demonstrated a range of factors, such as distress, personality characteristics, self-disclosure, coping, social support, environmental characteristics, assumptive world, rumination, spirituality and optimism, that have contributed to the development of posttraumatic growth; however, some relationships remain inconclusive. Conclusion: Further research is required, to clarify the genesis and the development of posttraumatic growth, also, to extend the posttraumatic growth studies in health context, encompassing the patient as well as family and social network

The Cognitive Behavioral Assessment (CBA) Project: Presentation and Proposal for International Collaboration

    Get PDF
Aims: The main aim of this paper is to describe almost 30 years of work on psychological assessment using CBA, a research team, and to propose collaboration with Latin countries. Methods: The acronym CBA stands for Cognitive Behavioural Assessment and indicates both an overall approach to clinical assessment and a series of tests. Five general principles formed the basis on which the team developed their questionnaires: (1) assessment is not a passive collection of information, but an active process similar to problem-solving; (2) horizontal integration of questionnaires with other assessment methods; (3) vertical integration and hierarchical structure of assessment questionnaires; (4) idiographic perspective; (5) computer support. Results: The paper briefly presents the most important tests: CBA-2.0, a broad-spectrum Battery for patients who need counselling and/or psychotherapy; CBA-H (Hospital) for both in-patients and out-patients suffering from physical illnesses; CBA-SPORT for professional athletes; CBA-Y (young people) for adolescents and young adults; CBD-VE (treatment benefits) to assess the effectiveness of psychological treatment. Conclusion: These questionnaires have produced over 100 research works, published in Italian journals or presented in conferences. In the near future, we expect important, radical changes and hope to create an international research milieu

Aim: To investigate the adaptation to breast cancer and gynecological cancer in pre- and postoperative periods is the main objetive of this study, to better understand the emotional impact, the social resources, and how women deal with their clinical situation for developing an appropriate intervention at both phases. Method: The sample is composed of 76 women diagnosed with breast cancer or gynecological cancer who underwent oncoplastic reconstruction, and who were followed during hospitalization, with relapse or without. The data were collected during the preoperative and / or postoperative periods. Results: Regarding the differences between the pre- and postoperative periods on an emotional level, we found that only a decrease in anxiety from the pre- to postoperative period was statistically significant. Conclusion: Anxiety levels in these women tend to decrease from the pre- to the postoperative period. We also noted that, the general adaptation increases slightly while satisfaction with social support decreases.
