    Grundlagen der Suchtechnologie

    Nach einem kurzen historischen Abriss (vom ersten Register, über die ersten Idee einer Suchmaschine bis zu Google) wird die Vorgehensweise bei der automatischen Indexierung von Dokumenten vorgestellt. Wie gelangt ein Dokument in den Index und wie und welcher Reihenfolge (Ranking) wird es wieder ausgegeben. Anschließend werden die verschiedenen Suchtechnologie-Arten (Zeichenabgleichung, Reguläre Ausdrücke, Fuzzy-Suche, Phonetische Suche, Semantische Suche) und Ranking-Verfahren (Formale Sortierung, On-Page-Faktoren, On-Site-Faktoren, Link-Faktoren, Eigenschaften und Verhalten der Nutzer) vorgestellt. Zum Abschluss wird ein kurzer Ausblick auf Suchmaschinenoptimierung gegeben

    Web-2.0-Anwendungen wie Weblogs, Feeds, Twitter oder Facebook finden auch zunehmend im Bibliotheksbereich unter dem Namen Bibliothek 2.0 Anwendung. Werden diese Dienste in den Katalog integriert so spricht man von Katalog 2.0 oder OPAC 2.0. Neben der aktiven Verwendung der Dienste als Privatperson oder unter dem Namen der Institution, ist aber auch die Optimierung des eigenen Webauftritts für diese Dienste (Social Media Optimization / SMO) und die Beobachtung der Dienste in Bezug auf Kommentare von Nutzern zur eigenen Institution (Social Media Monitoring / SMM) wichtig.     Preserving repository content: practical steps for repository managers

    Few people would disagree that preservation of repository content is important. Indeed, the stated aim of most repositories is to provide permanent open access to the material therein. Why, then, have so few repositories implemented practical action plans for long term preservation of their content? There could be several reasons. Although a number of preservation tools and services already exist, until now few have addressed the specific needs of repositories; in practical terms they have necessitated action that is additional rather than integral to repository workflow. Repository content is typically highly varied and complex, while descriptive metadata and file formats are used inconsistently and deposited by those without knowledge or expertise in managing digital assets. Busy repository managers with little, if any, experience in digital preservation have lacked time and confidence to tackle what is perceived as an important but complex and scary problem. The JISC-funded KeepIt project is bringing together existing preservation tools and services with appropriate training and advice on preservation strategy, policy, costs, metadata, storage, format management and trust to enable the participating repository managers to formulate practical and achievable preservation plans. From the point of view of the repository manager, this presentation summarises the activities of the KeepIt project, describes the impact that the project has had on the participating repositories, and suggests steps that other repository managers might take to ensure preservation readiness

    Solrizer: Pragmatically Connecting Search, Management and Indexing in a Repository Solution

    Any repository solution provides facilities for Creation, Management, and Editing of Content as well as facilities for Searching and Browsing through that content. Experience has shown that when a solution binds these two areas of functionality together too tightly, the system becomes brittle and unworkable, discouraging innovation. Our work on the Hydra project has produced a flexible and intuitive solution that combines these two areas in an almost entirely decoupled fashion. This solution, which is already working in multiple Hydra applications, is built on a three-part pattern where Blacklight handles Search and Discovery, ActiveFedora handles Creation, Management and Editing of Content, and a small application called Shelver supplies the crossover point by indexing the content into Solr so that it will show up in Blacklight. This three-part approach reflects a strong pattern for designing and/or improving repository solutions. The main pivot of this approach is to treat indexing as its own separate part of the application and to allow that indexing processes to evolve constantly as part of the application development cycle. This work is the product of combining established best practices, best of breed software, and lessons learned from an iterative approach to application development. While our implementation is focused on Fedora Repositories, the software could be used in multiple contexts and the pattern is certainly applicable to any content-oriented application

    Using DSpace for Publishing Electronic Theses and Dissertations

    The IUScholarWorks Repository is a DSpace-based institutional repository for the dissemination and preservation of Indiana University's scholarly output. Some time ago, our team made a decision to incorporate electronic theses and dissertations (ETD's) into our DSpace repository, and this created several technical challenges for us. Getting ETD's into DSpace is a challenge that a number of institutions have tackled recently, and several innovative solutions have been found, such as Vireo, the ETD submission management tool from the Texas Digital Library. However, we were faced with a number of requirements in our ETD workflow that had not yet been encountered by other institutions, and required some interesting solutions. In this proposal, we will provide an outline for a presentation that will discuss these challenges, and the solutions that were envisioned. We will also provide an update on our current progress towards implementing our plans, and discuss the future work that is left to be done

    Bezweifelte Platon in seinem Liniengleichnis noch, dass von Bildern ein wissenschaftlich akzeptabler Erkenntniswert ausgehe, so sind heutzutage in vielen (natur-)wissenschaftlichen Gebieten Bildtechniken für die Wissensproduktion und -darstellung unerlässlich. In der quantitativen Wissenschaftsforschung ist vor allem die Übersetzung von Daten in Diagramme zu beobachten. Bereits mit den Untersuchungen des Biomathematikers Alfred Lotka zu den Häufigkeitsverteilungen wissenschaftlicher Produktivität (1926) ist das Sichtbarmachen von Daten (Visualisierung) ein fester Bestandteil für die Beantwortung wissenschaftssoziologischer Fragestellungen. Visualisierungen spielen aber auch in Anwendungs- und Beratungskontexten eine zunehmende Rolle, womit sich ein mögliches Handlungsfeld für Bibliotheken ergibt. Der Vortrag führt zuerst in den Stellenwert von Visualisierungen in den Wissenschaften für die Erkenntnisgewinnung und ihrer Popularisierung ein. Anschließend werden anhand der Sozialen Netzwerkanalyse bibliometrische Grundkonzepte graphentheoretisch hergeleitet sowie Beispiele im Umfeld der Bibliothek vorgestellt. Dass diese Methoden nicht nur auf Zitations- oder Nutzungsdaten begrenzt sind, zeigt abschließend ihre Anwendung auf den Begutachtungsprozess einer europäischen Wissenschaftsvereinigung
