Dari al-Qur’an ke Hizbut Tahrir: Evolusi Makna Khilafah dalam Pemikiran Taqiyuddin al-Nabhani

    Get PDF
The concept of khilafah in Islamic thought has sparked considerable debate and conflict, particularly following the rise of the Hizbut Tahrir (HT) movement, which advocates for the establishment of a global Islamic government based on Taqiyuddin al-Nabhani\u27s interpretation of khilafah. This study aims to trace the evolution of the meaning of khilafah from its origins in the Qur\u27an to its modern interpretation by al-Nabhani. Utilizing Julia Kristeva\u27s intertextuality approach, the study explores how these changes in meaning occur and identifies the sources that have influenced al-Nabhani\u27s thought. The findings indicate that the concept of khilafah in the Qur\u27an fundamentally denotes representation, applicable to both humans as God\u27s vicegerents on earth and within a governmental framework. Nevertheless, the Qur\u27an does not provide explicit, detailed guidelines regarding the khilafah as a system of governance. Al-Nabhani reinterprets khilafah as a government founded on Islamic Shari\u27ah, structured around four primary pillars, and intended to have a global reach. The study reveals significant shifts in the meaning of khilafah, characterized by processes of transformation, modification, and expansion, reflecting the context and ideological perspectives that al-Nabhani introduces. These shifts are marked by the ideologeme of transposition, illustrating the adaptation of the concept to fit new ideological frameworks and contexts

Form, Materiality, and Symbolism in Non-Arabic Muslim Arts: A Case Study from Indonesian Wayang Performance

    Get PDF
The puppet theater becomes a popular form of cultural expression in the Muslim world, even though wayang performances are not considered a central part of Islamic theology. Wayang performances are seen as having a spiritual significance among Indonesian Muslims for centuries.  Such puppet theater incorporates forms, styles, and elements of Islamic spirituality and traditional Javanese cultural practices into its narratives. The article pays attention to the idiosyncratic forms, elements, and meanings of contemporary wayang through the craftsman’s framework. The analysis takes into account the formulation and presentation of the wayang in contemporary Indonesian art, focusing on the creation of “Wayang Kekayon Khalīfah Paraga Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.” This wayang is associated with the figure of \u27Umar b. Khaṭṭab (d. 644). Umar is a historical figure who played a significant role in the early history of Islam and is revered for his wisdom and leadership by most Muslims. The discussion argues that the materiality of puppets in the non-Arab Muslim world not only functions as a traditional form of entertainment stimulating the sense of “fun” but also as complex semiotic experiences between a dhalang (wayang puppeteer) and his audiences using signs of two-dimensional buffalo leather and its silhouettes

Millennials, Peacebuilding, and Popular Islamic Novels: Exploring Transformative Bridges for Interfaith Relations

    Get PDF
This article explores the role of interfaith relations in Indonesian society, with a particular focus on their representation in contemporary Islamic novels. While various programs have been implemented to foster interfaith harmony, the role of literature in promoting such relationships has received less attention. This study highlights the incorporation of interfaith themes within contemporary Islamic novels, where romantic storylines are intertwined with Islamic teachings. Millennials and young people, who constitute a significant portion of the readership, find enjoyment in these narratives and ideologies. The inclusion of interfaith narratives in these novels serves as a countermeasure to the popular "chick lit" genre that employs vulgar language and lacks religious nuances. Employing Ervin Goffman\u27s theory of dramaturgy, the research focuses on the works of Habibburahman El Shirazy and Asma Nadia as representative popular Indonesian Muslim novelists. The findings reveal that Islamist novels have received positive responses from millennial readers, and the elegant delivery of interfaith values contributes to peacebuilding within the context of this generation. Overall, this study emphasizes the promotion of peace and interfaith understanding through the medium of popular Islamic novels, catering to the needs and preferences of the millennial demographic

Moderating Islam Through Indonesian Muslim Manuscript on Ngariksa YouTube Channel: The Study of Sufi\u27s Understanding on the Qur\u27an and Hadith Text

    Get PDF
Manuscripts that teach a moderate religious understanding are considered capable of warding off ideological conflicts and maintaining security and stability. This paper shows how the strategy of Muslim philologists to moderate religious understanding, especially in the Qur\u27an and hadith understanding, through the introduction of ancient manuscripts packaged in the online study of the Ngariksa YouTube channel. Using the digital humanities approach of David M. Berry, Ngariksa’s activity is a part of the socio-cultural practice as a system of knowledge that is carried out in a plural manner, in the sense that information, materials, archives, and documents that are digitally documented can influence the institutionalization of science mediated by new technology, such as computing and internet. In the socio-cultural practice in the digital space, it is necessary to change the character of the Indonesian Muslim community in a more moderate. This change is due to the classical narratives containing moderate past knowledge from moderate figures. In this context, Ngariksa presents Ibrahim al-Kurani\u27s perspective on Sufism that is based on the outer and inner meanings of the texts of the Qur\u27an and Hadith. An understanding based on just outward meaning is vulnerable to religious extremism

Ailal Rashid\u27s Critical Contribution to Sahih Al-Bukhari in the book of Sahih Al-Bukhari Nihayah Usturah

    Get PDF
This study aims to reaffirm that in the hadith literature, all scholars declare that Sahih al-Bukhari is the most authentic book after the Qur’an. Likewise, Ulamas have also praised the intellectuality of Imam Bukhari and Sahih al-Bukhari with its perfection in re-recording the words of the Prophet, both in terms of the sanad and matan. The high reputation of Sahih al-Bukhari seems to be under debate among scholars after many thinkers criticized Sahih al-Bukhari. One of the critics is Rashid Ailal who wrote Sahih al-Bukhari Nihayah Usturah. This study used a text analysis approach, namely reading people’s thoughts through the text, which was then concluded and interpreted as research findings. The method of this study was library research, namely collecting data from books, notes, and related research reports. This study shows that Rashid Ailal’s criticism of Imam Bukhari is that Imam Bukhari is just an ordinary human being who can be right and wrong. Furthermore, according to Rasyid Ailal, the codification of hadith and the instrument of ulum al-hadith which have been used as a means of selecting hadith transmitters are a tragedy. The method is not suitable to serve as the legitimacy of hadith. According to Rashid Ailal, Sahih al-Bukhari is a book of tales. He added that Imam Bukhari is a person who is majruh (flawed), and matruk al-hadith (the transmission of the hadiths is not valid) because the transmission is only based on assumptions. In Rasyid Ailal’s opinion, the existence of the author of Sahih al-Bukhari is still majhul (unknown), so the existence and credibility of Sahih al-Bukhari are questioned

The Philosophy of Illumination: Esotericism in Shihāb ad-Dīn Suhrawardī’s Sufism

    Get PDF
Discussing Suhrawardī, certainly, cannot be separated from his concept of thinking about illumination (ḥikmat ishrāqiyyat), which has contributed to the foundation of human knowledge and awareness. The research question in this paper is how esotericism in Shihāb ad-Dīn Suhrawardī’s Sufism relates to the philosophy of Illumination. The discussion of this study is based on qualitative library research. In each section, this paper is supplemented with an explanation using the methods of description, interpretation, and data analysis to build a consistent and thorough understanding. This paper found that, according to Suhrawardī, knowledge is the presence of an object to know. Knowledge can only be attained by the mystic into the inner sanctum of higher visionary experiences (mushāhadat wa mukāshafat), not merely through logical reasoning. To achieve the truth of implicit knowledge, the philosophy of illumination suggested the combination of reason and intuition, which are complementary to one another. Regarding esotericism, in this case, the soul is interpreted as a part of the realm of light, but it is trapped in darkness, so spiritual training must be carried out in the spirit of soul-giving. Suhrawardī believes that only a clean soul can be connected to the divine light, wherein at that level, one can get intuitive wisdom, or in Sufism, it is called the laduni knowledge

Analisis Pengaruh Konteks Sosial-Historis terhadap Penafsiran Ibn Kaṡīr atas QS. Al-Mā’idah [5]: 51

    Get PDF
This study investigates Ibn Kaṡīr\u27s interpretation of QS. al-Mā\u27idah [5]: 51, with particular emphasis on the prohibition against taking Jews and Christians as awliyā\u27 (loyal friends or protectors). Ibn Kaṡīr  interprets awliyā\u27 using the term muwālat, which connotes forming close friendships or alliances. This interpretation appears to contradict a hadith that he himself cites, which indicates that such relationships may be permissible under certain circumstances. The study seeks to describe and analyze how Ibn Kaṡīr\u27s socio-historical context, particularly during the Crusades, influenced his interpretation of this verse. By employing an analytical-descriptive approach within a literature review framework, this research examines how interpretive biases can emerge when the socio-historical context of the exegete is not adequately considered. The findings reveal that Ibn Kaṡīr\u27s stringent interpretation, which broadly prohibits Muslims from forming close alliances with Jews and Christians, is deeply rooted in the religious and political tensions of his time. The study underscores the necessity of adopting a holistic approach in Qur\u27anic exegesis to mitigate potential biases stemming from the socio-historical circumstances of the exegete

Al-Tayyārāt al-Dīniyyat al-Mutaṭarrifat wa ‘Istiqṭāb al-Shabāb: Dirāsat Ḥālat Lībiyā: [Waves of Religious Extremism and the Polarization of Youth: A Case Study of Libya]

    No full text
The study dealt with extremist religious currents to attract young people into Libyan society through the framework of functional analysis, which resulted in the presence of dysfunction in society. This study sheds light on the relationship between Libyan youth and religious extremism in the context of the Arab Spring, meaning the political transition after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. Some trends are undergoing changes, resulting in the emergence of extremist religious currents. It can be concluded from this study that the problem of extremism is due to the existence of a cultural conflict and a cultural gap between two generations. This gap is the reason for creating the psychological, intellectual, political and ideological divergence of the young generation from the adult generation
