    No full text
How can we assess what philosophy or a human science owes to an artistic movement ? To explore this question, I take the example of Lévi-Strauss's relationship with Surrealism. While the relationship between the founder of structural anthropology and André Breton has already been studied from a historical perspective, it remains to be seen what structuralism owes philosophically to Surrealism. When Lévi-Strauss acknowledged the movement's “lyricism and probity” in 1960, was he suggesting that its influence was as much aesthetic as ethical ? To verify this hypothesis, I take two cases of intellectual encounters between Lévi-Strauss and Surrealism: the hasard objectif, and the definition of the subject. This second example will furthermore enable us to relate surrealism to the anthropologist's other great mentor, Rousseau. How can we assess what philosophy or a human science owes to an artistic movement ? “Un indovinello a figure”: Magritte e l’arte come rebus

    No full text
The relationship between surrealism and psychoanalysis can be understood from two perspectives, depending on how one approaches the dream: either as a visual representation of an otherworldly, surreal world, or as a way to access an unconscious meaning whose syntax must first and foremost be reconstructed. Based on what Freud writes in chapter 6 of The Interpretation of Dreams, where he refers to the dream as a “rebus,” this duality will first be illustrated using the paintings of Dalí and Magritte. The analysis will then focus on Magritte (with particular attention to La trahison des images) and attempt to emphasise the not primarily iconic, but rather conceptual character of his painting, which through its semantic and syntactic incongruities, shows to be a reflection on the pre-positive conditions of meaning. According to the inversion of perspective that Breton identifies in Surrealist art, as opposed to Alberti’s window, Magritte’s window opens onto the subject: it stages, through the production of a certain non-sense, “the real functioning of thought,” that condition of possibility so clearly expressed in La condition humaine. The relationship between surrealism and psychoanalysis can be understood from two perspectives, depending on how one approaches the dream: either as a visual representation of an otherworldly, surreal world, or as a way to access an unconscious meaning whose syntax must first and foremost be reconstructed. Participatory land suitability evaluation for agroecological transition: insights from the BIAN project, Ecuador

    No full text
This study, carried out in the framework of the Biocorridor Andes North Project in Ecuador's Northern Andes, uses participatory methodologies, combining Geographic Information Systems with local knowledge, to assess the perceived land suitability of most relevant land uses in Mariano Acosta, El Carmelo and Tabacundo parishes. This approach, employing Pairwise Ranking and the Analytic Hierarchy Process, ensures that land use evaluation, and following technical recommendations, are both scientifically sound and aligned with community needs and priorities. Preliminary results show promising suitability maps, indicating needs for adjustment in the overlay methodology

    No full text
This contribution aims to investigate the figure of Alexandra of Antioch, one of Libanius’ three female correspondents. Through the translation and commentary of some passages of the epistles addressed to her or quoting her, it is provided a prosopographical reconstruction of the woman, who was admired by her contemporaries for the depth of her intellect and for her culture. Well-known to leading figures of the Julian court and even to the emperor himself (Lib. Ep. 802), her letters were appreciated even by an experienced epistolographer as Libanius. Perhaps, Alexandra was also the writer of a work of Homeric tradition that has been lost (Lib. Ep. 771). The article also intends to focus on the situation of women’s education in the 4th century in Antioch and the occasions in which it could have public visibility.

The first and second parts of La gente de mar, a work carried out by Dionisio Múxica y Cortés - retired merchant marine captain and former Navy pilot under the command of the first class ship captain D. Both in the first part, entitled Los habitantes del buque, composed of thirty-one chapters, and in the second, Marinos en tierra, of thirty-six, the author presents us, along with the description of the tasks of each of the the components of the crew - which includes permanent praise for them -, an unequivocal criticism of the direction and management of the Navy by politicians and military - especially in the second part -, a political trial, in which no It skimps on argumentative and persuasive resources - which here we will try to analyze from a pragmalinguistic perspective - which make up a characteristic discourse of the time, in which the cultured level alternates with the medium and the formal registers with the colloquial in a hyperbolic style. bombastic and, at times, histrionic

In this work we will address the mutiny of the galleon San Jerónimo in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Its importance and interest lie in having a complete account of the event written by one of its protagonists, whose content and analysis has allowed us to know in depth how a mutiny on the high seas takes place. Thus, we begin this study with a clear background on the Legazpi navy and its situation of need, causes of the preparation and sending of the San Jerónimo. Then the preparations for that first relief are developed based on the correspondence of the Royal Court of Mexico and the local authorities to gather supplies and men. Subsequently, we analyze the figure of Juan Martínez de Arestizábal, author of the story, as well as their relationship, and then immerse ourselves in the terrifying journey of the galleon and its crew with their misadventures, tragedies and island discoveries. Finally, in the last two sections we discuss the final destination of the galleon after its arrival in Cebu and the possible theories about Lope Martín and those abandoned on an island after those loyal to the Crown recovered the ship

    No full text
This work focuses on the testimonial account of one of the most unfortunate naval battles of the empire of Charles V: the day of Algiers in 1541. We will analyse the Greco-Latin model and its influence on the humanist chronicle of Francisco López de Gómara. The author went to the contest and described a humiliating defeat for both Emperor Charles V and Hernán Cortés. To do this, he used the resources of the classical epic also present in his account of the conquest of Tenochtitlan. As we will see, thanks to this historiographical model he achieved an epic and rigorous story.

    No full text
Metaphor is a literary device that translates the literal meaning of a word into a figurative one, thus reflecting how we understand the world. This study focuses on analysing metaphor in the language of seafarers to understand how everyday terms acquire expanded meanings in their professional context. Using Timoteo O'Scanlan's Spanish Maritime Dictionary (1831) as a basis, it will investigate how pragmatics and metaphor influence the expansion of the meaning of words in the maritime lexicon. First, the theory of language acquisition and pragmatics will be addressed, and then metaphorical usage in the vocabulary of seafarers will be analysed.Metaphor is a literary device that translates the literal meaning of a word into a figurative one, thus reflecting how we understand the world.
