Are we on the right track for mitigating climate change?

    No full text
Climate change, primarily driven by human activities, is becoming one of the most urgent global challenges of our time. Over the past decade, significant efforts have been made to address the climate change crisis, resulting in certain impacts in combating climate change and raising awareness about its consequences. This paper critically assesses global climate mitigation efforts, highlighting both achievements and persistent shortcomings. Despite growth in renewable energy, international agreements, and technological innovation, as well as a carbon market, greenhouse gas emissions remain at record highs, and climate impacts continue to accelerate. Key strategies that predominantly rely on a growth-oriented paradigm and technological solutions have fallen short, often reinforcing existing exploitation paradigms rather than transforming them. Drawing on Granular Interaction Thinking Theory (GITT), the paper proposes transitioning from an eco-deficit to an eco-surplus culture—one that views ecological restoration and protection as fundamental for socio-economic well-being and development. Mitigating climate change requires not only scaling proven solutions but also reimagining socio-economic and governance structures to align with planetary boundaries and long-term sustainability

Maternal and neonatal outcomes of in-water and out-of-water births in low-obstetric-risk labour: a retrospective observational study at Piacenza hospital.

INTRODUCTION The utilisation of birth pool immersion during labour and delivery constitutes one of the primary non-pharmacological methods for alleviating pain. Consequently, an increasing number of women are opting to employ aquatic environments as a means of managing the childbirth experience. However, the literature reports conflicting data and poor-quality evidence on maternal and neonatal outcomes. It becomes important to understand whether water birth is safe for both woman and baby. The objective of this research is to evaluate and compare neonatal outcomes, including infections, admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, and Apgar scores at one and five minutes, alongside maternal outcomes such as vagino-perineal lacerations, postpartum haemorrhage, the duration of labour and the expulsive phase, as well as infections, between water birth and non-water birth scenarios.   METHODS A retrospective observational cohort study employing a parallel design was undertaken. A total of 698 women with low-risk obstetric pregnancies were included and stratified into two groups based on the type of delivery. Data analysis was performed using STATA 16.0 software, applying both descriptive and inferential statistical methods to assess the study variables. A logistic model was created for the study population to identify which variables may contribute to an increased likelihood of injury to the perineum.   RESULTS The research sample comprised 698 deliveries, which were evenly distributed between the two cohorts. The groups exhibited homogeneity concerning maternal age, parity, administration of antibiotic treatment during labour, and positivity rates of vaginal-rectal swabs. A further notable discrepancy (p<0.05) was observed in the volume of postpartum blood loss; however, the difference was minimal in both cohorts. Logistic regression analysis revealed that for each 1 cm increase in infant head circumference, the risk of perineal injury increased by 1.3 times (OR = 1.27; p = 0.002).   CONCLUSIONS The study identified no significant differences in maternal and neonatal outcomes between water and non-water births. Consequently, it appears both suitable and prudent to permit women experiencing low-risk obstetric labour the autonomy to decide whether to deliver in a water-based setting or not. However, further studies are needed. Despite the findings presented, it is crucial to emphasise that further investigation and analysis are absolutely necessary

Il fr. 971 Kannicht e il Fetonte euripideo: nuove ipotesi di lettura

    No full text
The paper offers a lexical analysis of a fragment from an unidentified Euripidean play (fr. 971 Kn.), aiming to demonstrate that it can be attributed to Phaethon. It becomes evident that the symbolic meaning of certain words is not random, because fr. 971 Kn. is connected to Phaethon’s mythical context, which is characterized by the flames of Helios’chariot

The persistence of the opposites: AI and blockchain for transparent and secure cross-regulatory compliance and enforcement cooperation test beds in the EU digital acquis

    No full text
Artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technologies occupy a prominent position on both global and European regulatory agendas, functioning as both passive objects of regulation and active instruments of regulatory governance. Their shared capacity to automate and accelerate processes traditionally performed by humans renders them apt for embedding compliance and enforcement functionalities into socio-technical systems. This potential has been formally acknowledged — and in certain instances mandated — by the European legislators. The Data Act requires the deployment of interoperable smart contracts for the execution of data-sharing agreements generated by Internet of Things (IoT) devices;1 the DLT Pilot Regime provides legal recognition for distributed ledger infrastructures in the trading and settlement of crypto- assets; and the AI Act establishes obligations around traceability, verifiability, and explainability, thereby suggesting the central role of eXplainable AI (XAI) in fostering transparency, democratic oversight, and system security. This article investigates how the ostensibly opposing properties of AI and blockchain — centralisation versus decentralisation, probabilistic versus deterministic logic, opacity versus transparency — may be harnessed to develop regulatory infrastructures that are transparent, secure, and compliant ‘by design’. Building on computer science literature and extending the RegTech and SupTech paradigms beyond the financial domain, the study investigates the prospective integration of AI’s adaptive and predictive capabilities with blockchain’s immutability, auditability, and privacy-preserving architecture — augmented by smart contract automation — while critically addressing its potential limitations and points of failure. It argues that such convergence can support cooperative, cross-sectoral, and cross-border mechanisms for legal compliance and regulatory enforcement within the EU Digital Acquis. Two exploratory test-bed hypotheses are advanced. First, it proposes that blockchain-enhanced XAI may assist in fulfilling and enabling oversight of the transparency requirements applicable to high-risk AI systems under the AI Act. Second, the paper considers how federated learning — integrated with blockchain infrastructure — can enable privacy- and security-enhancing data sharing in accordance with the normative and technical provisions of the Data Act and the Data Governance Act. While recognising the persisting technical, legal, ethical and environmental challenges to full-scale integration, the article concludes that the AI–blockchain nexus holds considerable promise for the development of robust, transparent, and cooperative regulatory enforcement architectures across the EU evolving digital legal landscape

    The Postmetaphysical Future of Christianity

    No full text
With regard to the “return of religion” in philosophy – as proclaimed by many contemporary philosophers – in this paper I reflect on the future of religion, especially Christianity (and specifically Catholicism), referring to Gianni Vattimo’s philosophy of religion and postmetaphysical concept of religion in general. After briefly discussing the main tenets of this account of religion, I consider multiple issues and problems connected to it, particularly: the status of religious practice and the Church, as well as the question of love which is central to the postmetaphysical account of religion. Other problems that I also tackle are: the motivations for the development of postmetaphysical religion concepts, their locality, their target group, and their status. In spite of many issues related to the postmetaphysical account of religion, I try to show that it can be considered the right direction for philosophy of religion, given its ethical awareness, its attempt to get away from violence and metaphysics, as well as its effort to adopt some of the most important contemporary philosophy’s findings into religion
