The attention paid in the 1960s to unknown figurations of “end of the world” led De Martino to the heart of the confrontation between “pathological art” and “modern art”, which focused on surrealism in France after the Second World War. In what way would this detour by a marginal object of psychopathology be necessary to think, as an anthropologist, the singularity of a new visual culture? The attention paid in the 1960s to unknown figurations of “end of the world” led De Martino to the heart of the confrontation between “pathological art” and “modern art”, which focused on surrealism in France after the Second World War. The Disorder in P and M of Cicero’s Letters Ad familiares, with a List of Extant Manuscripts
The 15th-century manuscripts of Cicero’s letters Ad familiares are often said to descend from M (s. IX) by way of its copy P (a. 1392), and accordingly the argument was put forward in 2024, with consequences for dating, that any reading also found as a correction of Niccoli’s in P spread from P. Both views are challenged here and the former blamed on a misapprehension of Politian’s about the disorder that he found in the quires of P. When not conjectural, Salutati’s corrections in P are taken back to another copy of M written in northern Italy, Niccoli’s to M itself; Vat. Lat. 1688, hitherto ignored, is shown to be the earliest copy of P, made before all the corrections. For the benefit of anyone who may wish to explore the work done by humanists on a text that captivated them, a lightly annotated list of extant manuscripts is appended.
Defining 'Naturalness': Constructed Languages as Typological Exploration
Among the community of language construction enthusiasts, particularly those who fall underthe ‘artlanger’ category, there exists a concept termed ‘naturalness’ (Rhiemeier, 2012). Underthis framework, the quality of an artistic language (‘artlang’) can be assessed in terms of hownaturalistic it is, i.e. the degree to which it is a simulacrum of a natural language (or ‘natlang’).This concept as practised in artlang communities exhibits a complex relationship with broaderlinguistic theory and typology that I explore in this talk.In terms of how ‘naturalness’ is achieved, while some advise engaging in ‘imaginative role-play’, (Brown, 2017), the main advice is to read about a wide array of natural languages to seewhat structures are attested (Peterson, 2015). Discussion of exemplar natlangs is thus a fre-quent device in theorising among artlangers, such as Kearsley (2023), who uses a discussion ofChukchi as a starting point for a critique of simplistic views of basic word order and alignment.Indeed, the term ANADEW, an acronym of ‘A Natlang Already Did [it] Except Worse’, distillsthis point, by noting that natlangs already exhibit ‘bizarre’ phenomena (Rhiemeier, 2012).This paper explores the extent to which this learned intuition of ‘naturalness’ on the partof conlangers conforms to the kinds of generalisations drawn by typologists, making two mainobservations. Firstly, I observe that, as noted by Merlo et al. (2022), the typology of a con-structed language is in large part determined by the diversity of languages that the conlangerhas had exposure to, i.e., their typological knowledge. Secondly, I propose that another signif-icant influence on the typology of constructed languages are the theoretical assumptions madeabout Language more generally (a point made elsewhere for morphology by Peterson (2014)),particularly focusing on morphological complexity as discussed by Baerman et al. (2017
This paper presents several activities designed within the framework of the action research project Plurilingualism for Social Sustainability and Youth Inclusion, aimed at upper secondary schools. Starting from considerations on the contemporary socio-cultural context in which Italian schools operate and the key actors involved in educational and formative processes, the project activities are illustrated in close connection with the educational objectives they seek to achieve. The first educational pathway focuses on the enhancement of plurilingualism through intercomprehension-based approaches. In this regard, the paper highlights the educational potential of the comparative mindset inherent in intercomprehension practices, emphasizing both the value of historicity as a pedagogical category and the possible shift in social perceptions of cultural differences. The second educational pathway aims to foster self-expression through the aesthetic dimension, encouraging individuals to continuously reimagine themselves and others in a creative way. At the same time, this process helps regain awareness of one's participation in the network of relationships that shapes individual identities.
“Is it possible to consider internationally appreciated writers, who are active on the web, influencers?”. Moreover, “Might literary culture be of inspiration as much as other forms of digital influence, in this era of easy and whimsical self-proclaimed and much followed influencers?”. This Round table open to PhD candidates of the Course in Digital Humanities (University of Genoa and University of Turin) is a launching pad for a debate on Literary celebrities and the world of the new media, especially through the analysis of official websites of internationally renowned writers.“Is it possible to consider internationally appreciated writers, who are active on the web, influencers?”. What are the Challenges Encountered in Initiating Green Takaful Products as a Potential Climate Finance Tool in Sri Lanka?
Takaful as a risk-mitigating tool plays a significant role in the modern Islamic finance landscape, since it has experienced substantial growth and expanded globally in the field of economics. The alignment of the Islamic financial sector with conventional financial market trends, while adhering to Shariah law, has contributed to the growth of Islamic finance and Economics. To attain sustainable development goals, several countries have already introduced green insurance products, and the takaful market in various countries has competitively initiated green takaful products under the climate finance concept. This study aims to explore the challenges to initiating green takaful products as a climate financial tool. The study adopts a qualitative and inductive approach, utilising interview data as the primary source of information. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the collected data for the study. The findings indicate numerous challenges, such as regulation, risk, cultural, and learning and development challenges in implementing green takaful in the Sri Lankan takaful market. This research holds a significant contribution to the takaful sector in terms of initiating green takaful products in the insurance market in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, each challenge discussed in this study and the ways to overcome them can be a major focus in future studies. Hence, it provides valuable insights for policymakers, regulatory authorities, product creators, practitioners and coming researchers in climate finance and green takaful schemes
Animal-oriented laukikanyāyas: On some uses of analogical maxims concerning animals in selected Vedāntic contexts
This contribution analyses some common uses of illustrations and analogical maxims related to the animal kingdom in general and some animals in particular. Indeed, Sanskrit philosophical texts occasionally resort to everyday life scenarios that are readily accessible to human experience in order to clarify sophisticated theories, doctrines or complex theoretical disquisitions. The maxims that portray specific natural and cultural situations and analogise them with specific theoretical contexts are called laukikanyāyas. These laukikanyāyas, which are usually built upon the observation of nature, are frequently modelled after animals, taking into account certain physical or behavioural traits that may be either tangible or cultural. A well-known example found in the Adhyāsabhāṣya (Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda’s introduction to his Brahmasūtrabhāṣya) will serve as a methodological starting point for the analysis
