Maasai in its linguistic landscape: The case of the Arusha region (Tanzania)

    No full text
The present article analyzes the multilingual landscape of the Arusha region, primarily a Maasai-speaking area in Tanzania. The authors focus on the representation of the Maasai language in public signage by examining the physical properties of signs featuring Maasai (their supports, frames and places), their functions, and the coexistence with other languages. The data reveal that, although scanty, in both quantitative and qualitative terms, Maasai does feature in the local signage. Monolingual Maasai signs are rare, while multilingual signs, combining Maasai with English and Swahili, are more common. Overall, signs in English and/or Swahili largely predominate and, when attested, the Maasai material tends to be limited to single nouns and proper names and serves as a modifier in the names of establishments. The findings corroborate the broader tendencies in Tanzania (and Africa more generally), where local ethnic languages are under-represented in public signage, being overshadowed by colonial languages and official/national African languages

    Díízìn pronouns and demonstratives

    No full text
Díízìn is one of the least studied Omotic languages of Southwest Ethiopia. It has three main dialects (Central, Eastern, and Western Díízìn). The main objective of the study is to describe and document the Díízìn pronouns and demonstratives. Data were collected from native speakers through group discussion and observation. In addition, secondary data sources were reviewed. Basic linguistic theory (BLT) was employed as the analytical framework. Díízìn has two separate sets of subject and object pronouns. The language has three tonal systems: high, level and low tones as in kwóy ‘bridge,’ kwōy ‘mother,’ and kwòy ‘guinea hen.’ In this study, the high (  ́) and the low (  ̀) tones are marked; the unmarked tone is the level tone. The language has seven subject and object pronouns, which distinguish three persons: first, second, and third. It also marks singular, dual, and plural distinctions. Of these, the dual person distinction is a unique feature of Díízìn. A masculine- feminine distinction is made only in the third person singular.  Díízìn demonstratives indicate two basic distance contrasts: 1) near vs. far 2) far vs. very far. Accordingly, the language has two basic demonstrative forms that express proximal (Prox) and distal (Dis) in every direction (i.e., vertical and horizontal including higher and lower altitudes). Within the distal category, there are three sub distinctions: far, very far (visible), very far (invisible). Directional demonstratives are inflected for number, definiteness, and gender as nouns or adjectives. Additionally, different demonstratives are used to express elevation contrasts (lower vs. higher altitude). Demonstratives are productive in Díízìn.  That means, they indicate the relative distance of an object, location, or location of a speaker at different positions

    No full text
The present study deals with the intensification in the diachrony of Spanish through phraseological units, specifically, nominal locutions formed with the noun verdad. Starting from a semantic-pragmatic perspective, the research is extended beyond adjectival and adverbial locutions, offering a new perspective based on the role that nominal locutions play in discourse when modifying the illocutionary force and enunciative modalities. For this purpose, texts close to the communicative immediacy of the 16th to 20th centuries are examined, from two textual databases: the CORDE, of the Real Academia Española, and the Corpus XXX compiled by the XXX research group. The present study deals with the intensification in the diachrony of Spanish through phraseological units, specifically, nominal locutions formed with the noun verdad.

    No full text
Palabras clave: Max Aub; Cuentos ciertos; giro espacial; literatura ectópica; efecto espacial; script situacional; Déborah VukušićAbstract To approach Max Aub’s literary legacy is also to approach his diasporic identity. The biographical profile of this author, marked by displacements and exiles, shows the importance that the concepts of “space” and “place” have had in his life experience, which leads us to question the use and function that these concepts have had in his production. To do this, we will rely on some concepts borrowed from the “spatial turn” and the ectopic perspective (Albaladejo), in particular with regard to the “spatial effect” (Cavicchioli) and the “situational script” (Jouve) as structural elements of the Aub diegesis. In particular, we will focus on three stories that belong to the anthology Cuentos ciertos (1965): “Una canción”, “La Ley” and “Enero sin nombre”. Our hypothesis is that the study of space under the magnifying glass of the ectopic and the “spatial turn” can reveal some unprecedented connection between the literary product and the reader’s reception, in addition to highlighting the value of the literary and human legacy of Aub’s work that is still valid.   Keywords: Max Aub; Cuentos ciertos; Spatial Turn; Ectopic Literature; Spatial Effect; Situational Script; Déborah Vukuši

    No full text
Gambling Disorder (GD) is a relatively recently recognized pathology and it represents a behavioral disorder on the rise in younger individuals. Data from the Ministry of Health attest that until July 2021 in Italy, gambling affected a population of 5.2 million players defined as “habitual”, of which about 1.2 million developed addiction. Although the devastating effects on people’s lives have always been known, in ancient times it was considered simply a “vice”. There was an effective method to counteract it since psychotherapy was adopted only with its official recognition by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1980. However, a very eloquent testimony of this symptomatic condition can be found in the intertwines with the daily events of Tropea in the seventeenth century, telling an authentic story from the peculiar characteristics on how this disorder could be dealt with before the advent of the modern psychology. A bond, drawn up by the notary Francesco Scrugli who lived in Tropea at that time period and preserved at the State Archives of Vibo Valentia transmits a fragment of the life of people who lived centuries ago and how they reacted, with the tools of the time, to the problems that we face even todayIl Disturbo da Gioco d’Azzardo (DGA) è una patologia riconosciuta in tempi relativamente recenti e rappresenta un disturbo comportamentale in ascesa negli individui più giovani.

The Takaful between economics, law, and religion. Considerations in relation to Islamic contract law and insurance transactions

    No full text
The takaful industry as it exists today in terms of its growth potential and the challenges associated with its development. The opportunities associated with takaful are numerous, mainly due to its wider market reach and adaptability; unlike conventional insurance, takaful is permissible for Muslims and non-Muslims alike and offers a more diverse range of products. The takaful industry is also one of the fastest-growing businesses, contributing significantly to the global insurance industry. However, despite the promise of takaful, the industry faces many obstacles today. Most importantly, the overall value of the takaful industry in terms of total assets and contributions (premiums) is negligible compared to both the size of the Muslim population and the conventional insurance industry. Not to mention the challenges related to supervision and transparency, standardization, and lack of knowledge. Therefore, this paper will analyze the economic potential and impact of the takaful industry, as well as explore the role of takaful in poverty alleviation, where some research has already proven successful. It will also examine the challenges facing the industry, which are slowing down its development and preventing it from realizing its full potential

Don Quixote, a national myth in the early Franco era

    No full text
Don Quixote, the novel and the character, were the object of a projective reading in the first ten years of Francoism, with different tones and emphases depending on the historical moment. In this paper, a critical review of the most representative ideas of this misappropriation is made, to try to understand its evolution, from the initial use of the character as an emblem of the desired imperial values –the desire to be and the selfless action of the good of humanity–, to the later identification with the melancholy of the misunderstood hero, passing through the ideological excavation in Don Quixote in search of the Falangist utopian impetus. &nbsp
