    Image Processing for Motion Magnification

    No full text
Motion Magnification (MM) is a collection of relatively recent techniques within the realm of Image Processing. The main motivation of introducing these techniques is to support the human visual system to capture relevant displacements of an object of interest; these motions can be in object color and in object location. In fact, the goal is to opportunely process a video sequence to obtain as output a new video in which motions are magnified and visible to the viewer. We propose a numerical technique based on the Phase-Based approach for Motion Magnification which analyses the video sequence in the Fourier Domain and rely on the Fourier Shifting Property. We describe the mathematical basis of this method and the corresponding implementation in a numerical algorithm. We present preliminary experiments, focusing on some basic examples made up using synthetic images

Tracing the Dynamics of Errors. Albert the Great and the Presocratics on the Void

    No full text
This article brings to light a complex ‘dynamic of errors’ which Albert, in his Commentary on Aristotle’s Physica, uses to elaborate on the problem of the void. In his analysis, the Dominican philosopher addresses issues such as the void’s definition, its existence, or its relationship to motion, while stating his own position on the matter, which heavily relies on Aristotle. Albert argues that the errors made by certain pre-Socratic philosophers (in particular, Anaxagoras, Leucippus, Democritus, Xuthus, and Pythagoras) contributed to the formation of flawed doctrines in the Middle Ages, such as that of Avempace (alongside whom Albert mistakenly places Avicenna). By identifying and exposing ‘errors’ Albert creates a valuable vantage point to address the problem of the void, whilst emphasizing the significant role played by pre-Socratic thinkers in the emergence and evolution of scientific discourse on the issue

From Regional Approach to Transnational Perspective: Philological Insights into John Picard’s Quaestiones

    No full text
This article offers the first systematic philological reconstruction of the sources underlying John Picard of Lichtenberg’s Quaestiones, newly available through 2025 critical edition. Traditionally regarded as an early representative of Thomism in the German Dominican milieu, Picard emerges here as a thinker deeply embedded in a wider transnational scholastic network. By comparing Picard’s text with works by Albert the Great, John of Paris, William Peter of Godin, Godfrey of Fontaines, Hervaeus Natalis, James of Viterbo, and the Oxford master of arts John Dymsdale, the study reveals previously unnoticed literal correspondences and shared argumentative structures. These findings rethink the long-standing narrative of a distinctly German philosophical Sonderweg, showing that medieval intellectual life in Cologne was shaped by dynamic exchanges with Parisian and Oxonian debates. Picard’s Quaestiones thus exemplify a microhistorical case whose ‘exceptional normality’ illuminates the broader patterns of medieval scholastic culture

In the field of cultural relations between Italy and Argentina, it is possible to recognize the figure of the nomadic writer. Driven by motivations of territorial and linguistic displacement, the nomadic writer promotes a trend of mestizo literature capable of mediating between different cultures, conspiring against the reductionist prejudices of the canon and the nation, and rethinking otherness in contemporary societies. The figure of the nomadic writer, who due to displacement relativizes the relationship between language of origin and nation, emerged in the context of transformation that took place in Western culture at the end of the 19th century. John Rodolfo Wilcock, Syria Poletti, and Adrian Bravi are significant examples of literary nomadism. The metaphorical potentiality of the nomadic figure is present in their texts, where it is updated in diverse possibilities. Different levels of these subjects’ autobiographical life experience are evidenced in their writings and thematized in particular constructions of subjectivity that, from specific locations, point to their singularity. Eccentric protagonists are shaped, who find in their profession the forms of the polyglot writer’s own rarity. In the field of cultural relations between Italy and Argentina, an area whose powerful consistency is notorious, it is possible to recognize the figure of the nomadic writer. From auto/biography to a historiography of post-colonial Tanzania in Swahili popular literature

    No full text
This article will present two Swahili popular works: the popular novel Mpenzi I-II (‘Lover I-II’,1984; 1985) by Kajubi D. Mukajanga and the collection of short stories Mpe Maneno Yake (‘Give him his words,’ 2006) by Freddy Macha. Mukajanga started writing the novel in 1982 but the first volume was published in 1984 by his own publishing house, Grand Arts Promotions. The environment he describes is that of J.K.T (Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa /National Service) of Makutupora where the writer describes daily life as he lived it and according to the law in force in 1977. The second volume of Mpenzi, published in 1985, recounts historically verifiable events as the outbreak of the Second World War; the founding of T.A.N.U (Tanganyika African National Union) with the veiled description of Nyerere; the 1964 uprising that is narrated through the perspective of Mzee Potee’s character, and the failure of the Ujamaa’s policy. The episodes narrated were really lived by him or by people very close to him. In Macha’s Mpe Maneno Yake the autobiographical elements are prominent, and the short stories reflect the author’s personal perspective and the narrated events are a representation of how they were experienced by the author. Although the two works were written and published at different times, the first in the mid-1980s and the second in 2006, both authors utilise autobiographical elements and contribute to the biographical representation of post-colonial Tanzania

A vision for just and fair transitions toward a carbon-free world: Review of A just transition for all: Workers and communities for a carbon-free future by J. Mijin Cha (2024) MIT Press

    No full text
Technological visionaries often paint a future powered by clean energy, yet these optimistic visions tend to overlook the messy socio-political realities of such transitions. As A Just Transition for All: Workers and Communities for a Carbon-Free Future (MIT Press) powerfully illustrates, there is a vast difference between a so-called ‘just’ transition and one that is genuinely just. This book offers a much-needed, thought-provoking, and meticulously documented exploration of how political and business leaders can ensure fairness and justice for all stakeholders—especially vulnerable workers and their communities—as the world shifts toward a carbon-free future
