SUNY ESF: 100 Years and Still Going Strong
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (hereafter called the College) was founded in 1911 under Chapter 851 of the New York State Education Law. At that time it was the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University and the formation of a State University in New York was far in the future. However, by 1948 the College became a unit within the newly formed State University of New York and in 1972 the College name was changed to its present name: State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). Over the last 100 years the state, the nation, and the world have changed and the College has kept pace with those changes. Responses to change are sometimes dramatic, sometimes slow and evolutionary, sometimes lagging behind a movement, and sometimes anticipating the future. The history of the College is the story of:
• programs (teaching, research, outreach)
• physical plant (buildings, properties, equipment)
• people (faculty, students, administrators, legislators
Communications Guidelines for Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) Students
As an engineering professional, you need to communicate your ideas effectively to a wide variety of audiences. We have prepared these guidelines to provide you with our ideas and expectations on this important subject. We will expect you to refer to these guidelines as you practice your communications skills while a student in our program.
This guide is intended to help you practice and perfect your communication. We are told by the employers of our graduates that our program generates great engineers because they have the right balance of effective communication and core engineering and critical thinking skills. To master effective communication you must practice. We expect you to practice effective communication skills throughout your four year program and beyond
Developing Sustainable and Renewable Chemical Engineering Practices through Interning with a Private Chemical Company
The objective of my Honors Thesis Project was to gain knowledge and experience in the means of chemical and bioprocess engineering by experiencing analytical and organic chemistry hands on in a laboratory setting and scaling up to an industrial chemical plant setting. It was determined that through thorough analysis via analytical chemistry techniques and innovation through research and development using organic synthesis, that sustainable practices can be developed and utilized within the chemical and bioprocess industries

NC Brown Center Annual Report 2010-2011
Over sixty researchers and clients used the microscopy services provided by the NC Brown Center for Ultrastructure Studies this year. This included faculty and students as ESF, Syracuse University, Cornell, and Upstate Medical University.
A new rate schedule for services was implemented this year. The schedule has varying rates for ESF, SU and other academic institutions, and industrial users. Several inquiries from industry were a direct result of the revised webpage for the center that includes our new rate schedule.
Dr. Robert Hanna retired as Director and Professor at ESF in December 2010.
Robert Smith visited FEI and Technical Sales Solutions, Portland, Oregon in March 2011. Susan Anagnost visited FEI and Technical Sales Solutions, Portland, Oregon in June 2011.
The NC Brown Center recognizes Pfizer (formerly Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) for their donation of $350,000 in electron microscopy equipment. The donation received in 2009- 2010 includes a Balzers Freeze Fracture unit with glow discharge, Leica EM CPC plunge freeze system, 3 Liquid N2 tanks, Leica EM FC6 Cryo and resin ultramicrotome, Leica EM Grid Staining system, drying oven, light microscope, critical point drying system and 6 diamond knives. Robert P. Smith, MS, Assistant Director of the N.C. Brown Center at SUNYESF solicited this donation which will help modernizing the electron microscope lab at ESF. Robert P. Smith is the former Head of Electron Microscopy at Wyeth Vaccines
