Physical Modeling of Deflector Arms in a River Table
Stream deflectors are a restoration structure used to control bed and bank erosion and improve stream habitat, biodiversity, and aesthetics, yet little research has been conducted on stream deflector design. In this study different deflector designs were modeled using scaled wood geometries in a laboratory river table representing a restored stream. The model deflector arms were designed to represent the agency guidance for length and angle of rock deflector vanes. Vanes were given holes to replicate boulder gaps and key lengths to replicate boulder blocks common to rock vanes. A rapid assessment tool was used to evaluate the performance of each model deflector design, with failure of the vane defined by erosion rates of the river bank and bed. Patterns of failure varied mostly with respect to key size. Bed erosion such as head cuts did not vary on average with respect to key size. Bank erosion at the structure increased in models with shorter keys. The experiment determined longer key length with smaller or no holes had the least erosion. Future experiments should test vane sensitivity to a greater range of river table flow rates and river table sand sizes. This work increased our understanding of how stream restoration deflector structures affect their scour functions

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Gateway Building: An Educational and Energetic Assessment
It has been shown that the implementation of renewable energy technologies in the building sector has the potential to achieve long-term energy and cost savings. The combined heat and power system, housed within the newly constructed Gateway Building on the SUNY ESF main campus, is in the position to increase the College’s energy acquisition efficiency by 50%, when compared to the currently utilized system. The system will be constructed and displayed in such a way as to be easily understood by students, faculty and the general public- providing an array of educational prospects. Students at the College will have the opportunity to further understand the CHP system through its integration in offered coursework. The Building will also provide the means through which to expand the research of renewable energy technologies. There are a host of positive externalities associated with the Building, including but not limited to: reductions in fuel price uncertainty and increases in occupant health. Thus we have concluded that the Gateway Building has the potential to not only have a positive impact on the immediate campus community, but also on the Syracuse area as a whole
Tail Communication in the Eastern Gray Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis
Tree squirrels are known to communicate with their tails, but the only aspects of this communication that have been studied are tail flicking and piloerection. I investigated the communicative significance of tail position in wild eastern gray squirrels by videotaping them at an artificial food source. For each individual, I recorded dominance rank, aggression, avoidance behavior, and three variables describing tail position (tightness of curvature, portion of tail bent, and tail contact with ground). When a subordinate squirrel approached a dominant squirrel I recorded whether the approach was successful, and when a dominant squirrel approached a subordinate squirrel I recorded the distance that the subordinate moved away. All three tail position variables were correlated with the behavior of both the signaler and the receiver. The interaction effect between the tail positions of two interacting squirrels was a better predictor of the more dominant squirrel’s degree of aggression than either squirrel’s tail position alone. Analysis suggested that different tail variables do not communicate the same information, indicating that tail position may communicate multiple pieces of information simultaneously. I hypothesize that the tightness of the tail’s curvature communicates a squirrel’s degree of confidence (its status), the portion of the tail that is bent communicates degree of hunger, and whether the tail is touching the ground indicates intent to move
