Revitalizing the Municipal Model: A Case Study of Winter Park Golf Course
Get PDFThis thesis aims to provide a well-substantiated possible course of action for municipalities facing uncertain futures with their golf facilities. The trend of failing municipal golf courses has become prevalent since 2007, resulting in an overall decrease in the number of municipal facilities throughout the country. This is an unfortunate reality, as municipal golf plays a key role in introducing the sport to a racially and socio-economically diverse group of people, and has also played a crucial part in combatting golf’s traditional issues with racism and elitism. Ultimately, because of the accessibility and model of equality provided by municipal golf courses, municipalities are justified in investing in golf, despite questions of purpose and financial viability.
Winter Park Golf Course, a nine-hole municipal facility in Winter Park, Florida provides a model for how other municipalities can invest and change their failing facilities to make them more successful from both a financial and accessibility standpoint. After undergoing a significant renovation in the mid-2010s, the previously-failing course now experiences a high amount of success. This success, which is evidenced by revenue that is nearly double what it was prior to the renovation, is because of a strategically designed golf course that caters to all types of players, as well as a number of events, organizations, and initiatives that welcome and benefit golfers and non-golfers in the community. The course’s leadership, as well as the changes to the physical design and creation of wide array of events, serve as important lessons for other municipalities. In the end, trying to follow certain aspects of the Winter Park model would serve struggling municipal courses well
Beyond the Coronavirus: Understanding Crises of Social Reproduction
Get PDFFrom a feminist political economy perspective, the unfolding of the coronavirus is a further reminder of the fundamental contradiction between a capitalist system that prioritizes profits, and a feminist ethic that prioritizes life-making or social reproduction. This paper argues for a more systematic understanding of crises of social reproduction under capitalism, stressing the difference between such crises for labour, and those for capital. The coronavirus crisis represents an extraordinary example of a crisis of social reproduction for capital, but this paper examines crises of social reproduction for capital and labour that arise from the more ordinary workings of capitalism. The paper focusses on the unfolding of such crises in the global South, using the case of India to illustrate the usefulness of such an analysis
The Role of Sibling Relationships in College Friendships
Get PDFPast research suggests that children’s sibling relationships play an important role in their friendships, though much less is known about these linkages during adulthood. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the quality of young adults’ sibling relationships is associated with the quality of their non-romantic friendships. A sample of fifty-nine Undergraduate students who were predominantly white and female and attending a small liberal arts college reported on their perceptions of their sibling and friendship relationship quality as well as their attachment orientation and personality characteristics. Findings indicated that young adults’ sibling relationship quality was associated with the number of friends they reported in high school and with certain aspects of their relationship quality with friends. Specifically, the nurturance, reassurance of worth, social integration, and guidance young adults perceived in their relationships with their siblings were associated with these same relationship qualities in their non-romantic friendships. Furthermore, young adults with and without siblings did not differ in their friendship harmony. Attachment security and personality characteristics played important roles for the harmony and conflict young adults reported in their sibling relationships as well as for their friendship harmony. This study was one of the first to explore how young adults’ experiences with their siblings relate to the nature of friendships they form before and during their transition to college. In contrast to prior research with children and adolescents, linkages between sibling and friendship relationship harmony during the early adulthood stage did not appear to be as strong suggesting that perhaps the unique social environment in college overshadows the impact siblings have on friendships for those with secure attachment orientations and positive personality characteristics
Age Differences in False Memory
Get PDFAfter witnessing an event, a witness may be exposed to additional details about the event. These details can be inaccurate and delivered by numerous sources including other witnesses, law enforcement, and news reports. The purpose of this study was to examine how such post-event details can influence eyewitness memory reports, specifically when the post-event details are delivered by individuals from a social in-group or social out-group. Participants were young and older adults who were paired with a fictional partner. The fictional partner was manipulated to appear a member of the same racial group or a different racial group. Participant and partner pairs completed a social memory task in which the partner introduced false details to the participants. The results of the study were consistent with past research that has been done, indicating that older adults typically have a worse memory compared to young adults. It was further demonstrated that older adults are more susceptible to false memory formation than young adults, especially when false information is socially presented. Finally, the Stroop task also showed that older adults had a higher susceptibility to error

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF) is one source of welfare in the United States. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the state in which a child lives matters, as TANF’s reach varies considerably across the U.S. The purpose of this thesis is to understand why some states reach more needy families than other states and to suggest policy recommendations to help TANF’s reach be more consistent across states
Social Validity of a School-Home Note Intervention for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Independent Stakeholder Perspectives
Get PDFHigh quality communication between school and home is reported to be highly valued by parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, they remain dissatisfied with school-home communication and limited empirical research has addressed this topic. One study that used a school-home note with parent-provided, home-based reinforcement to reduce child off-task behavior showed differential results for some students, but high social validity according to parent and teacher participants. In this study we evaluated the social validity of this school-home note intervention from the perspective of other parents of children with ASD—outside consumers who did participate directly in the intervention. Focus groups were conducted with 22 parents of children with ASD. Results showed high acceptability of this intervention related to: communication and data sharing, parent involvement, child motivation, and consistency between school and home. Participants also identified several limitations and suggestions for improving the school-home note. Implications for research and practice are discussed
