    Bayesian Estimation of Parameters of Weibull DistributionThis paper develops a Bayesian analysis of the scale parameter in the Weibull distribution with a scale parameter θ and shape parameter β (known). For the prior distribution of the parameter involved, inverted Gamma distribution has been examined. Bayes estimates of the scale parameter, θ , relative to LINEX loss function are obtained. Comparisons in terms of risk functions of those under LINEX loss and squared error loss functions with their respective alternate estimators, viz: Uniformly Minimum Variance Unbiased Estimator (U.M.V.U.E) and Bayes estimators relative to squared error loss function are made. It is found that Bayes estimators relative to squared error loss function dominate the alternative estimators in terms of risk function

    Influence of Relationship Management on Organizational Performance among Insurance Companies in Kenya

    Over the years most insurance companies have experienced a steady decline in their performance.Others have bowed to pressure and exited the market while some have collapsed due to poor management of their employees and lack of relationship management. This study sought to establish the influence of relationship management on organizational performance among insurance companies in Kenya. The study was anchored on competency theory. The research philosophy adopted for the study was positivism. Descriptive and explanatory cross-sectional research designs were adopted with the study population comprising of the management staff of all the 55 registered insurance companies in Kenya and a sample size of 208 participants drawn from lower, middle and top level management using stratified sampling technique. Data was collected with the help of semi-structured questionnaires. Analysis of collected data was conducted using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. The findings indicated that: (i) Relationship management was adopted to a moderate extent in insurance companies in Kenya as shown by a mean score of 3.152, (ii) There was a strong positive correlation between organisation performance and relationship management (0.823), (iii) Relationship management had significant influence on the performance of insurance companies in Kenya as shown by a P-Values of 0.000 and a coefficient of determination (R2=0.677) suggesting that relationship management predicted 67.7% of all variations in organizational performance. The study concluded that relationship management has a significant influence on organizational performance. Based on this conclusion, the study recommends that the management of insurance companies should always seek to establish the ability of the employees and management staff in terms of relationship management. The study suggests that other studies be conducted based on other organisations other than those in the insurance industry to determine if similar results would be obtained

    Analysis of Challenges Facing ICT integration in Managing Public Secondary Schools: A Comparative Study of Day and Boarding Secondary Schools in the South Rift Region, Kenya

    The uptake of information communication technology (ICT) by secondary schools is beset by a complex of challenges that are not clearly understood and documented. In order to facilitate effective and efficient implementation of digitalization in schools in Kenya, there is need to map out the diversity of challenges that bedevil its adoption. The purpose of this study was to analyze the challenges facing integration of information communication technology (ICT) in the operations of public day and boarding secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. The objectives of the study were to; assess the challenges facing ICT integration and compare the levels of ICT integration in boys, girls and coeducational secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The target population for the study comprised of all the 141 teachers from the public secondary schools in the south rift region of Kenya enrolled in the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE) program. The study employed census sampling technique since the target population was small, easily accessible and manageable. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using the descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. The study tested the hypothesis that there was no statistically significant difference in challenges facing integration of ICT in boys, girls and coeducational secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. To test this hypothesis the One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics was computed which yielded p-value = .000 which was less than the alpha value α > 0.05 indicating that the differences in challenges facing ICT integration in boys, girls and co-educational schools were statistically significant. Therefore the null hypothesis was rejected. This led to the conclusion that challenges facing ICT integration from the three categories of schools were significantly different. From the findings of the study, it is recommended that there is need strengthen in service training of teachers in ICT and perform widespread upgrade of ICT software since these were the most serious challenges that faced integration of ICT in schools

This is a qualitative research that has utilized both primary and secondary data from county governments and the National Treasury respectively. The sample has been developed from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics list of households in Kenya. The result indicates that effective cash management would enhance household welfare, leakages and lack of prioritization among others notwithstanding. The study concludes that there is need to enhance oversight of the treasury management across governments. The capacity of treasury managers should also be improved to secure fiscal discipline

    Carbon Sequestration by the Above Ground Biomass Pool in the South West Mau Forest of Kenya, 1985 - 2015

Increase in forest biomass enhances atmospheric carbon sequestration while decrease in forest biomass contributes to carbon dioxide emissions. World over, forest biomass has been declining due to forest loss and degradation. The South West Mau has experienced significant forest loss since 1964. The decline is posited to have significant impacts on carbon sequestration, carbon storage, carbon dioxide emissions and status of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This study assessed interannual trend and variability as well as change point detection in carbon sequestration in South West Mau Forest, Kenya between 1985 and 2015. Above ground biomass carbon sequestration was quantified based on the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) and carbon fraction for tropical climate domain. Carbon sequestration dynamics were characterized by increase-decrease cycles of approximately 3 years and low interannual variability (CV= 9.13).     Integration of Mobile Intelligent Tutoring Systems in Teaching MathematicsMathematics plays a critical role in driving economies and scientific transformation of any society. However, students' poor performance over the years in secondary schools’ national examinations remains a major concern to all the stakeholders. The poor performance has been attributed to high influx of students due to free secondary school programme posing a challenge of inadequate one-on-one tutoring leading to attitude issue. The proposed Mobile Intelligent Tutoring Systems (M-ITS) have the potential to deliver cheap and one-to-one support to students outside the traditional classrooms and computer laboratory settings. The use of mobile devices can be an advantage with most schools with inadequate financial resources to invest in and maintain modern computer laboratories since the cost of acquisition and maintaining light weight mobile devices is lower. In addition, learners can easily carry them between home and school as well as share the mobile tutors between classes in the same school. This paper outlines the use of Mobile Intelligent Tutoring Systems in supporting the Mathematics human tutors in secondary schools and the role that mobile devices can play in disseminating and supporting the knowledge gained by intelligent tutors. The paper reviewed the existing related literature and traditional architecture of ITS. It then proposed an additional model on mood detector to be included in the design of M-ITS. The final part of the paper makes considerations on the development and implementation of Mobile Intelligent Tutoring Systems

    EFFECTIVENESS OF UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES IN MITIGATING EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES IN KENYA

    FULL TEXT THESISThe purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of university examinations management in mitigating examination malpractices in Kenya. The specific objectives were to; establish the prevalence of examination malpractices among male and female students in universities in Kenya, assess the adherence by universities to the examination regulatory frameworks in Private and Public universities in Kenya, examine the effectiveness of strategies used to control examination malpractices in Private and Public universities in Kenya and assess the challenges affecting the control of examination malpractices in Public and Private universities in Kenya. The study sought to find if there was significant difference in prevalence of examination malpractices between male and female students, adherence to examination regulatory frameworks by public and private universities, effectiveness of strategies used to control examination malpractices between the public and private universities and challenges affecting the control of examination between the public and private universities. The study was guided by Bandura’s Self-Efficacy theory. The target population was 40033 respondents. The study was based on the descriptive survey research design. A total of 390 participants were sampled using Kathuri and Pals’ sampling table. Purposive, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used. Data collection instruments were questionnaires and an interview schedule. Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient was calculated to establish the reliability of the instruments, which yielded r=0.79 and r= 0.77 for students’ and examination officers’ questionnaires respectively. Opinion of experts from the department of education was used to validate the instruments. Data was analyzed using both the descriptive and inferential statistics, precisely the t-tests. Results showed that 50.4% of respondents agreed that students possess unauthorized materials 49.6% agreed that students copy examinations and 50% indicated that they girrafed on others and these were the most prevalent forms of examination malpractices. Non-adherence to examination regulatory frameworks was affirmed by 51.3% of respondents while frisking was 64.5% of respondents. The t-tests calculated revealed that the prevalence of examination malpractices between male and female students in universities in Kenya was largely the same, the adherence to regulatory framework for private and public universities was largely the same, there was a significant difference in the effectiveness of strategies when public and private universities were compared and there was a significant mean difference when public and private universities were compared on challenges affecting the control of examination universities. Based on the findings, the study recommended that there was need to strengthen vigilance in the administration of examinations in universities in Kenya. In addition, there is need for use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in examination rooms and improved frisking of students.     Analysis of elemental concentration in soil and water was carried out in Ortum to ensure safe utilization of soil and water resources for agriculture, industrial, and household purposes. Elemental analysis of soil and water was done using the EDXRF spectrometer and the inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), respectively. A total of 59 soil samples from different locations and depth and 10 water samples were collected from Ortum using purposive sampling method. The results of the mean elemental composition of 13 elements Ni (ppm), Cu (ppm), Zn (ppm), Pb (ppm), K (%w), Ca (%w), Fe (%w), Ti (%w), Mn (ppm), Rb (ppm), Sr (ppm), Zr (ppm), and Nb (ppm) in soils were 58.11, 46.91, 73.49, 22.20, 3.83, 24.39, 1.72, 7.73, 1529.74, 60.98, 442.26, 410.63, and 29.36, respectively, and the mean of 19 elements Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, and Se in water samples in (mg/l) were 0.037, 0.0014, 0.0005, 0.0042, 0.0030, 0.021, 0.0080, 0.12, 73.81, 0.00023, 0.0036, 0.00276, 0.0040, 6.11, 38.18, 0.00023, 0.0032, 46.87, and 0.0026, respectively. The average elemental concentration in soils was within the world average range. The mean concentration of Cu, Zn, and Pb in soil reduced with increase in depth while that of Ni increased with increase in depth. The average metal pollution indices in soils, geoaccumulation index (Igeo) potential ecological risk index (Ei), and synthesized potential ecological risk index (Er) were evaluated and found to be − 0.40, 4.92, and 19.69, respectively. According to the classification index, the results show that the soil in Ortum is moderately polluted, and the risk associated with the measured elemental concentration of Ni, Zn, Cu, and Pb in the soils is low. The elemental concentrations in water samples was lower than the recommended permissible limits except for Calcium (Ca) in borehole water with an average of 90.80 mg/l against the permissible levels of 75 mg/l (WHO, 2011). The pH for water samples was found to range from 6.60 to 7.71 with an average of 7.07 which is within the acceptable range of pH 6.5 to pH 8.5 as recommended by WHO, 2011. The study found out that elemental concentration in soil and water samples from Ortum were withing the world average values and that the soil and water in Ortum is safe for use in agriculture and domestic purposes.
