Delayed photoisomerisation of the trans-PSB3 retinal toy model using on-the-fly quantum dynamics
We explore the trans–cis photoisomerisation process in a representative retinal protonated Schiff base known as trans-PSB3, employing the quantum dynamics method direct dynamics variational multiconfigurational Gaussian -DD-vMCG- in full dimensionality, i.e., 36 degrees of freedom on potential energy surfaces computed on-the-fly using the SA(2)-CAS(6,6)SCF electronic structure method with the 6-31G basis set. Although the toy molecule has been extensively studied using trajectory methods such as Tully surface hopping and ab initio multiple spawning, our application of the on-the-fly quantum dynamics method DD-vMCG reveals a previously unreported trans–cis isomerisation pathway throughthe S1 electronic state minimum that occurs hundreds of femtoseconds more slowly, despite using the same electronic structure method. This slower timescale and alternative deactivation route can be explained in terms of the accesibility to the conical intersections connecting the ground and the excited stateSG acknowledges NextGenerationEU funds (María Zambrano Grant for the attraction of international talent) and the grant ‘‘Programa Propio C1’’ from Universidad de Salamanca. Replacing natural savannas with eucalyptus and soybeans changes the matrix use and reduces bat taxonomic and functional diversity in the Amazonian savannas
Amazonian savannas are a mosaic dominated by shrub or herbaceous vegetation (savannas) that surrounds other habitats, such as forest patches. For bats, the savanna functions as a permeable matrix, and its replacement by agricultural systems can alter the way bats use the matrix and therefore the movement of individuals between forest patches. Our aim was to understand the consequences for taxonomic and functional diversity of replacing natural savannas with eucalyptus plantations and soybean fields in phyllostomid and mormoopid bats. We used Generalised Linear Mixed Models to: 1) compare bat assemblages from forest patches and savannas in ten natural landscapes of the northeastern Brazilian Amazon with forest patches and agricultural systems in seven cultivated landscapes with soybean fields and seven with eucalyptus plantation; and 2) investigate how the agricultural system cover in the landscape, the structural complexity of the matrix and the local availability of fruits change bat assemblages. The replacement of natural savanna with eucalyptus plantations and soybean fields leads to changes in the bat assemblage both in the matrix itself and in forest patches surrounded by this modified matrix. We found that bats continue to use the landscape after the savanna matrix is replaced with eucalyptus plantations, but stop using the matrix when it becomes a soybean field. In forest patches, we found higher species richness but lower functional and taxonomic evenness in eucalyptus landscapes, and higher bat densities (refuge
effect) due to a decrease in matrix permeability in soybean landscapes. Considering all landscapes, bats’ response
to matrix change is explained by the matrix vegetation height, fruit availability and the agricultural system cover. The results show the importance of matrix management for conservation of species within forest fragment refuges in anthropized landscapes. We conclude that forest patches in anthropized landscapes should be conserved, but that savanna remnants must also be prioritised in order to maintain landscape heterogeneity and the movement of individuals between forest patches. Furthermore, arboreal or shrubby elements should be established in soybean fields to provide a more bat-friendly matrix. Finally, implementing laws targeted to maintaining natural habitats’ heterogeneity within each biome could improve landscape managementThis work was supported by the Coordenaçao de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior [grant numbers 8888.424975/2019–01], the Rufford Foundation [grant numbers 25585–1], the Bat Conservation International [grant numbers 2434131], the National Geographic Society [grant numbers EC-59186R- 19 and NGS-83254R-20], the Neotropical Grassland Conservancy [grant numbers 01098803–5]. A Drosophila ecdysone-deficient model to assess the endocrine disruptor activity of Bisphenol A
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well characterized endocrine disruptor that interferes with the activity of a variety of nuclear receptors. For this reason, BPA has the potential to impact the function of the endocrine system and alter cellular physiology. In this study, we present a novel experimental system to characterize the actions of dietary BPA on organism physiology. We used Drosophila melanogaster larvae genetically deficient for the synthesis of the major insect steroid hormone, ecdysone. These larvae exhibit a variety of phenotypes that can be rescued by dietary supplementation of 20-hydroxy-ecdysone or Ponasterone A, a naturally occurring ecdysteroid. We tested the effect of different concentrations of BPA exposure in this genetic background, and found that this chemical partially rescues the deficit in ecdysone. Furthermore, through in silico structural predictions of the Ecdysone receptor’s ligand binding domain, we identified a protein domain capable of accommodating with different affinities ecdysone, Ponasterone A and BPA molecules. These findings pave the way for novel experimental approaches to identify and characterize new potential vertebrate endocrine disruptorsThis research was supported by Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación, Grant/Award Number PID2022–141894OB-C21 to JFdC and PID2022–141894OB-C22 to AP-L and P
Exploring infinite distance limits of type II Calabi–Yau compactifications
New insights into lakota syntax: the encoding of arguments and the number of verbal affixes
This paper examines the morphosyntax of transitive constructions in Lakota, with particular emphasis being placed on the encoding of arguments. The analysis of argument marking through verbal affixes in Lakota transitive constructions raises two main questions: the existence or non-existence of the zero marker for the third person singular and the maximum number of bound argument markers that a verb can take. This issue presents a considerable challenge since, due to the lack of evidence for early stages of development in this language, it is very hard to know if
third person was ever realized through an overt bound argument marker or if certain constructions involving three cross-referencing elements were formerly accepted, which, by extension, would allow us to develop general theories about how and why language changes have occurred. Despite this limitation concerning the lack of historical evidence, I will attempt to shed some light on these issues by providing fairly conclusive evidence that can help us to ascertain whether the third person is actually marked covertly or whether it is simply not marked at all by examining the behavior of person markers in control constructions, as well as discovering exactly how many bound argument markers a Lakota verb is able to take simultaneousl
