Labour productivity in Mediterranean economies: A tale of failed convergence in the EU
Mediterranean economies (Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece) exhibit important structural weaknesses, such as low levels and disappointing growth of labour productivity that condition their growth model and raise doubts about the viability of their recent transition from debt-led to export-led growth. With this in mind, this chapter aims to analyse the extent and the drivers of labour productivity convergence of Mediterranean economies with the group of more developed EU countries over the period 1995–2017. To contextualize their convergence, we compare it with the group of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. We take the manufacturing subsystem as the unit of analysis, making use of the input–output tables to consider productivity spillovers across activities. Our results show that Mediterranean economies have failed to achieve significant β and σ convergence over the period. This contrasts with the performance of CEE countries, which have experienced successful convergence driven by a catching-up process in the capabilities that are required to produce more sophisticated good
Best-practice guidelines for reporting the photothermal effects of plasmonic nanoheaters
Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an emerging class of preclinical cancer treatments that allows the localized thermal ablation of tumors, generally using light sources in the near-infrared (NIR) to maximize tissue penetration and minimize healthy cell damage. Although PTT can be achieved with other materials featuring a high absorption cross-section at the NIR wavelength of the incident light source, plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as effective tools thanks to their high extinction cross-section, photothermal conversion efficiency, and tunable optical properties. Numerous studies have described the use of plasmonic NPs as nanoheaters both in vitro and in vivo. However, these reports often lack critical methodological details regarding the evaluation of photothermal effects. Key experimental parameters ─ such as laser type, beam profile, calibration procedures, and the use of optical elements (e.g., collimators, filters) ─ are often not specified, despite their substantial impact on the reported thermal outcomes. This lack of transparency hampers reproducibility and complicates cross-study comparisons. We analyze hereby a set of experimental design parameters that are essential for the accurate assessment of PTT performance, with a particular focus on plasmonic NPs as photothermal agents. This work is supported by experimental data obtained using gold nanostars under various irradiation scenarios. We conclude with a practical checkpoint guide of factors to be considered when conducting PTT experimentsFinancial support is acknowledged from the MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and ″ERDF A way of making Europe″ and European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR (Grants # PID2022-143248OB-I00, PID2023-151281OB-I00, and CNS2022-135941
Rumination catastrophism and pain in injured athletes
Pain associated to injuries is a complex experience that combine both objective and-subjective elements and which strongly affects rehabilitation outcomes of sport injuries. It may affect directly (e.g., reducing range and strength of the movements involved in the physical therapy), or indirectly (e.g., decreasing adherence, reducing psychological readiness). Cognitive factors such as rumination and catastrophic thinking may affect the perception of pain and play a role in athletes management of pain during this journey. This study is aimed at longitudinally examine the predictive role of ruminative and catastrophism thinking in the perception of pain among injured athletes. A total of 22 injured male soccer players were recruited (Mean age = 20.3 years old; SD = .991). The assessment instruments used were ad hoc questionnaire of personal and sports-related variables; a questionnaire of current injury and sports injury history; the Pain Catastrophism Scale (PCS); the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS); and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of Pain. The results showed a significant relationship between catastrophism, ruminative responses, and the perception of pain in injured athletes. Athletes with higher levels of catastrophism and rumination consistently reported a greater perception of pain. These results highlight the importance of targeted and tailored personalized psychological interventions for pain management to improve the rehabilitation process outcomes. Addressing individual coping strategies could improve recovery outcomes and support a more effective return -to-sport processThis work has been financed, in part, by the Football Federation of the Region of Murcia, within the framework of a research project together with the University of Murcia. This is mainly motivated due to several factors such as the lack of real data and intraclass variability, time and errors produced in manual labeling, and in some cases privacy concerns, among others. This paper presents an overview of the 2nd edition of the Face Recognition Challenge in the Era of Synthetic Data (FRCSyn) organized at CVPR 2024. FRCSyn aims to investigate the use of synthetic data in face recognition to address current technological limitations, including data privacy concerns, demographic biases, generalization to novel scenarios, and performance constraints in challenging situations such as aging, pose variations, and occlusions. Unlike the 1st edition, in which synthetic data from DCFace and GANDiffFace methods was only allowed to train face recognition systems, in this 2nd edition we propose new subtasks that allow participants to explore novel face generative methods. The outcomes of the 2nd FRCSyn Challenge, along with the proposed experimental protocol and benchmarking contribute significantly to the application of synthetic data to face recognitionThis study has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 TReSPAsS-ETN (No 860813) and is supported by INTER-ACTION (PID2021-126521OB-I00 MICINN/FEDER), Catedra ENIA UAM-VERIDAS en IA Responsable (NextGenerationEU PRTR TSI-100927-2023-2) and R&D Agreement DGGC/ UAM/FUAM for Biometrics and Cybersecurity.
Sensitivity to temporal synchrony in audiovisual speech in early infancy: Current issues and future avenues
Audiovisual speech integration during infancy is crucial for socio-cognitive development. A key perceptual cue infants use to achieve this is temporal synchrony detection. Although the current developmental literature on this ability is rich, unsolved disagreements obscure the interpretation of findings. Here, we propose conceptual and methodological issues that may have contributed to a still unclear picture of the developmental trajectory of sensitivity to temporal synchrony, particularly when studied in audiovisual fluent speech. We discuss several sources of confusion, including a lack of terminological precision, heterogeneity in the experimental manipulations conducted, and in the paradigms and stimuli used. We propose an approach that clarifies the definition and operationalization of sensitivity to temporal synchrony and explores its developmental course, emphasizing the role of infants’ linguistic experiences. Ultimately, we expect that our analytical review will contribute to the field by aligning theoretical constructs, proposing more fine-grained designs, and using stimuli closer to infants’ experiencesThis work was funded by a predoctoral contract awarded to IL by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (Grant Number FPU13/03508; 2015–2018) and two mobility grants to IL supportive of short-term international stays (FPU 2016 mobility subprogram and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid 2018 mobility subprogram).
Improvement in the efficiency of silicon PV modules with a highly luminescent copper(I)-I-based coordination compound by using different processing strategies
This research shows how the copper(I) iodide coordination compound, [Cu4I6(pr-ted)2] (pr-ted = 1-propyl-1,4- diazobiciclo[2.2.2]octan-1-ium) can be an excellent downshifter to improve the efficiency of commercial multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) photovoltaic (PV) modules. This compound was selected for its intense green emission, high photoluminescence quantum yield, high thermal stability, and single-step synthesis in water/ethanol at room temperature. Different types of configurations were investigated to integrate it into mc-Si PV modules. Thus, microcrystalline powder was deposited as a thin layer or as part of a composite film by means of its dispersion in commercial ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Both the transparency and concentration have been studied as critical factors that influence the resulting external quantum efficiency and the power conversion efficiency of the modified PV modules. The efficiency improvements are very relevant compared to previous examples based on lanthanides. Depending on the method used for the deposition on the PV module, different efficiency increases can be achieved reaching 0.36% and up to 0.42% with 0.05 and 0.1 mg/cm2 of compound. The composite film approach enables the industrial manufacture of EVA modified with the downshifter. Accordingly, large-scale hot-pressing production of [Cu4I6(pr-ted)2]@EVA films was carried outThis work has been supported by MCINN/AEI/10.13039/ 5011000011033 under the National Program of Sciences and Technological Materials and for the European Union Next Generation EU/ PRTR, (PID2022-138968NB-C21, PID2022-138968NB-C22, TED2021- 129810B-C22 and TED2021-131132B-C22
