Game on: curbing impulse buying and returns in apparel e-tailers

    No full text
This study explores the effectiveness of gamified strategies in addressing impulsive e-buying behaviors and mitigating subsequent product returns. Impulse buying in apparel e-tailers is a prevalent phenomenon with significant implications for both consumers and businesses. While impulse purchases contribute to e-tailers' sales, they also result in undesired consequences such as regret, dissatisfaction, and high return rates. This research investigates the potential of gamification, specifically distraction and substitution strategies, in counteracting impulsive online purchase decisions. Through online experimental and field studies involving participants from the United States and a European apparel e-tailer, respectively, we examine the impact of gamified interventions on impulse buying behavior and product return rates. The findings indicate that gamified distraction strategies are more effective than substitution strategies in reversing impulse e-buying behavior. Additionally, the field experiment demonstrates a significant reduction in product return rates among customers exposed to distraction interventions. These results highlight the potential of gamification as a nonpunitive approach to intervene in the e-decision-making process of consumers, offering practical implications for e-tailers seeking to minimize returns and enhance customer satisfactio

Double catalytic activity unveiled: Synthesis, characterization, and catalytic applications of iridium complexes in transfer hydrogenation and photomediated transformations

Iridium complexes have been demonstrated to be highly active catalysts for a wide variety of transformations. Their unique photophysical and photochemical properties render them as one of the most established photocatalysts. Moreover, iridium complexes are widely acknowledged for their efficiency in transfer hydrogenation reactions. However, the development of iridium complexes able to promote both traditional organometallic catalysis and photocatalysis is scarce. Thus, the design of iridium-based catalysts is still an active area of research. In this context, we targeted the synthesis of a family of Ir-Cp* systems to explore their (photo)catalytic applications. Here, we describe the synthesis, structural characterization, and photophysical properties of iridium complexes of formula [IrCp*Cl(N^O)]. These complexes have been applied with a double catalytic function, in transfer hydrogenation for carbonyl reduction and in different photomediated transformationsFinancial support was provided by the Spanish Government (PID2021-122299NB-100, TED2021-130470B-100, and TED2021-129999B-C32), “Comunidad de Madrid”, European Structural Funds (S2018/NMT-4367), and “Proyectos sinérgicos I+D” (Y2020/NMT6469). The influence of knowing the source of information on readers’ perceptions. An exploratory study on twitter

Disinformation, fake news or misinformation are well-known problems in social networks. Nevertheless, the readers play an active role-part because they consume and propagate such information. In this paper, we wonder how the readers perceive the information by identifying the source of information. The work presented in this paper details the exploratory study we conducted to check whether knowing the source of information influence people’s decision when identifying types of information, using a classification of information based on argumentation. Thus, we analysed the information that is spread on Twitter, a digital social network that works as a micro-blog where users can post short open messages in real-time, which we know as tweets, and researchers can access information about them. The results obtained through the application of statistical tests and their contrast with graphic methods show that the decision of people that know the source does not influence when identifying as “fact or data”, “opinion or judgment” and “counterargument”. However, the opposite occurs for the type of information labelled as “argument”. In addition, the results reveal that opinions spread more than facts on TwitterThis research work has been co-funded by the Spanish National Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación) through the project Indigo! Many of these have become fundamental tools in genomic research, clinical diagnostics, and forensic studies. Moreover, with the recent approval of gene therapy products and nucleic acid vaccines, one of the main challenges being addressed is the increased demand for large-scale production and manufacturing of highly specific genetic material. This leaves room for enzymatically produced clinical grade synthetic DNA. TruePrimeÒ is an isothermal DNA amplification method which does not require external primers (random or specific) as it combines two DNA-synthesizing enzymes (Picher et al. 2016). A DNA primase enzyme from Thermus thermophilus named PrimPol (TthPrimPol), uses dNTPs as substrates to produce DNA primers at different initiation sites of the given template. These DNA primers are then efficiently elongated by the high-fidelity and highly-processive DNA polymerase of bacteriophage Phi29 (Phi29 DNApol). The outstanding stranddisplacement capacity of Phi29 DNApol allows the continuous exposure of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) for new priming events, thus resulting on an exponential cascade of multiple displacement amplification (MDA). We have identified and characterised a new PrimPol from T. thermophilus SG0.5JP17- 16 strain, TthPrimPol2, which is endowed with DNA primase and DNA polymerase activities, triggered by both magnesium or manganese ions. Its enzymatic activities were superior to those of TthPrimPol and although it has a similar preference for template initiation sites, it processively synthesizes longer DNA primers, endures higher temperatures, and most importantly, has a stronger ssDNA binding affinity. Its combination with Phi29 DNApol enabled the detection and amplification of lower input DNA than TruePrimeÒ, valuable for its application when DNA is found in limiting amounts, such as in liquid biopsies. Furthermore, we have assessed the ability of a new B-family DNA polymerase endowed with de novo DNA synthesis capacity, piPolB, to perform DNA amplification as a single enzyme. No DNA amplification was detectable with piPolB alone, but its combination with Phi29 DNApol did yield competitive amounts of DNA, suggesting piPolB can initiate DNA primers synthesis but requires Phi29 DNApol for proficient elongation. Detailed fidelity analysis of the amplified material showed low error rates although piPolB-primed reactions contained a higher number of indels than TruePrimeÒ, especially at homopolymeric repeats. Better genomic coverage values were obtained for lower piPolB concentrations, suggesting high amounts of piPolB could interfere with the reaction. Conversely, the presence of piPolB in the reaction, a TLS polymerase enzyme, could benefit the amplification of challenging or damaged templates, where extreme accuracy of the resulting material is not the priorityThis thesis has been financed through the grants for Industrial Doctorates (Ref. Tesis Doctoral inédita leída en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Facultad de Medicina, Departamento de Bioquímica.

Autarky in Franco's Spain: The costs of a closed economy

Between the 1940s and 1970s, Spain used a variety of economic policies that hindered international trade. Because the mix of tariffs, quotas, administrative barriers, and exchange rate regimes varied greatly over time, the quantification of the effect of the various trade policies on international trade in this period is particularly elusive. In this paper, we use historical bilateral trade flows and a structural gravity model to quantify the evolution of Spain's border thickness, a summary measure of its barriers to international trade. We find that Spain's borders in the period 1948–75 were thicker than those of any other country in Western Europe, even after the liberalization of trade that started in 1959. These comparatively higher impediments to international trade implied substantial negative effects on consumer welfare. We estimate that accumulated welfare costs over the period 1948–75 exceed 20 per cent of a year's total consumptionIliana Reggio acknowledges financial support by theSpanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Grant PID2019-107916GB-I00). A modo de síntesis, un último bloque dividido en dos partes ofrece una valoración más específica de la aportación de Canalejas en los principales ámbitos de su pensamiento (jurídico, estético, literario, prensa, político y filosófico) y de su vida pública y una conclusión general que recogiese un balance de su figura y su impronta personal y filosóficaThe study of the life and work of Francisco de Paula Canalejas constituted a pending challenge both at the epistemological and philosophical level due to the expectation of the contributions he could offer to the understanding of Spanish Krausism, in particular, and of philosophical thought and the Spanish socio-political and cultural reality of the 19th century, in general. This impression had been expressed by several critics for a long time, but the research on Canalejas had not yet materialized in an extensive, specific and rigorous work. The main results of the research have settle on a complete biography, revised and documented based on historiographic and newspaper data; a detailed summary of all his writings, both books and articles; a critical analysis of his thought applied to the different facets of his public and intellectual life (law, aesthetics and literature, press, politics and philosophy); and, finally, a series of conclusions and challenges related to the understanding of Canalejas' contribution and its place in the so-called Spanish krausism. The thesis is divided into eight sections that can be grouped into four blocks. The first block is dedicated to the more technical, bibliographical and documentary information of the research. The next block is identified with the chapter dedicated to the biography of Francisco de Paula Canalejas. For this purpose, the chapter has been subdivided into specific and detailed sections on six notable stages in his biography. The third section is a summary and analysis of the author's work, both in the form of books and articles, classified by subject.and chronologically. As a synthesis, a last block divided into two parts offers a more specific evaluation of the contribution of Canalejas in the main areas of his thought (legal, aesthetic, literary, press, political and philosophical) and of his public life, and a general conclusion that includes a balance of his figure and also his personal and philosophical imprin
