Men hvad siger befolkningen? Hvordan forstår borgere i Danmark velfærd?
No-panic pragmatism: Nordic journalism educators’ preparedness to teach artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024
This article investigates the educational preparedness of Nordic academic journalism schools to teach artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024. More specifically, we examine journalism educators’ initial ideas on AI at a time when AI had gained prominence in public, following the release of the first user-friendly applications of generative and conversational AI. Based on the concept of pedagogical domestication of new technologies and journalism schools’ responsibility to critically adapt to industry development, we conducted a survey among journalism educators at major Nordic journalism education institutions (N=118, response rate 58%). We found that academic educators had mixed feelings about AI technologies. They expressed the need for AI to be incorporated primarily in the teaching of journalism ethics, as well as in fact-checking and information validation processes, but highlighted that the journalistic core values and understandings of the world needs to remain the same. With a mode of ‘no-panic pragmatism’, educators perceived AI as something that should be integrated into existing structures rather than anticipating a structural change in education. The study provides an initial documentation of the current state of journalism education and concludes with suggestions for further research and development of pedagogical practices
Yearly report on tidsskrift.dk and e-book platform in 2024
The role of civil servants in the Danish regions
Over the years, the public has increasingly discussed the role of civil servants in a modern democracy: To what extent can they assist their politicians, and how firmly should they insist on their bureaucratic norms when political demands go against it? A number of studies have looked into this aspect at the state level, but surprisingly few have empirically investigated the Danish regional level. This is puzzling, because there is reason to believe that the low politicization of the Danish regional level influences how civil servants act. Therefore we investigate the role of the civil servant based on 33 interviews with politicians and high ranking civil servants. We find that this role, at the regional level, differs from what former studies have found at the state level. We find that the limited demand for political-tactical advice means that civil servants rarely experience gray zones between bureaucratic norms and responsiveness. Similarly, there are rarely any occasions where political demands challenge their professional competency
Leadership of democratic communities: Municipal politicians’ motivation to take responsibility
Given that political party membership continues to decrease, it is relevant to investigate what motivates people to engage in political leadership of democratic communities. There is a lack of research-based knowledge on how sense of community responsibility (SOC-R) relates to political leadership behavior among politicians. Using survey data from all Danish municipal politicians in 2019 and 2023, we examine the longitudinal associations between SOC-R and two elements of democratic leadership: consensus building and visionary leadership. We employ both fixed and random effects panel regressions. The main finding is that SOC-R is positively associated with visionary leadership behavior, while findings are less certain for consensus building. This underscores the importance of continuing research into the conditions for leading democratic communities to prevent the erosion of political engagement
Reporting honour crimes to the police: Social workers’ perspectives on benefits and costs
AbstractWe examine how Swedish social workers and experts perceive the benefits and costs of reporting honour crimes to police. The number of actions and inactions that constitute honour crimes has increased since the law changed to include non-violent controlling behaviours. Honour crimes are collective offenses involving close victim-offender relationships. As such, they are associated with low reporting and a high dark figure. Through interviews with eleven social workers and professionals, we analyse the benefits of reporting, including accessing resources, protecting victims, deterring perpetrators, achieving justice, raising societal awareness, and building competencies among police and prosecutors. The costs of a victim involving police include the possibility of re-traumatisation, the escalation of danger from vindictive families, and damage to trust in support services. Our interviewees noted that the resource situation has improved and argued for a victim-centred response that acknowledges self-determination while recognizing the legal obligation to report crimes against minors. To increase reporting rates, there should be better coordinationbetween police and social services, more specialized training, and an increased prioritization of honour crimes in the justice system.
Facial recognition technology has the potential to enhance police investigations, but risks significant intrusions into fundamental rights, such as the right to privacy. Drawing on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the AI Act, and the EU Law Enforcement Directive, this article examines the two uses of facial recognition granted to Danish police in 2024: victim recognition in cases of child sexual abuse and facial recognition of suspects in serious violent crimes. At present, the use of facial recognition by Danish police is guided solely by political decisions, resulting in highly ambiguous frameworks regarding the types of cases in which the technology may be used and the databases that may be cross-referenced. The article argues for clear legal authorization in compliance with the Law Enforcement Directive
