Workers and New Technology? Analyzing the Complex and Multidimensional Relation through Job Quality

    No full text
While the impact of new technology on work is vast, our knowledge remains somewhat fragmented, particularly from a workers’ perspective. This article applies job quality as a multi-dimensional approach to contribute to deepening our understanding of the effect new technology has for public sector workers in Denmark. Job quality is a multi-dimensional concept, and the technological development has a different impact on the various dimensions leading to somewhat mixed results. Despite studying different occupations, the impact on some dimensions was clearer: the results show how worker autonomy is challenged by new technology, the physical work environment is improved, and levels of workload, stress, and job intensity are being more negatively affected. Overall, new technology is improving some dimensions of job quality, worsening others, and yet other dimensions remain less affected, contributing to the overall complexity. However, there is a subjective dimension, with the same technology having varying impact on workers

    No full text
Nøgleordlæremidler, legemedier, playful learning, materialitet, læreruddannelsen AbstractThis article examines how a conceptualizing of learning materials as play media can contribute to new understandings of their role in teacher education when working with playful approaches to learning. Through analysis of empirical material from a design-based research project, the article demonstrates how this conceptualization acts as a productive concept against the tendency of naturalizing learning materials in education. This article shows how the concept of play media instead opens for three key contributions in relation to function and use: 1) breaking with immediate patterns of use through experimental practices, 2) expanding the understanding for students of what can be included as learning materials, and 3) making visible how learning materials actively shape participation and understanding in teaching situations. It is argued that this conceptualization is particularly relevant in teacher education, where students need to develop competencies for creating varied and engaging teaching in their future professional practice.

”Queerness is unstoppable”: How video game publications frame LGBTQ topics

    Get PDF
During the 2010s, video game content and subsets of the gaming community have been diverging in polarized directions regarding LGBTQ topics in video game culture. On the basis of these discourses, this study utilizes framing and discourse analysis to examine how video game publications frame LGBTQ topics in gaming. Analyzing 269 articles published between 2002 and 2020, it fi nds that 57,2% of articles utilize framing characterized by egalitarian equality, compared to 0,7% that use traditionalist morality framing, while 36,1% use neutral framing. A majority of articles likewise deploy politically loaded keywords in a sincere manner rather than a veiled manner, in which these words function as stand-ins for conservative views. Further, the study points to conservative discourses like Gamer-Gate affecting the output of articles between 2014 and 2015 and charts the potential construction of a journalistic paradigm in which journalists do not utilize slurs. This paradigm and high levels of egalitarian and neutral framing differ from previous findings regarding framing in game journalism.  During the 2010s, video game content and subsets of the gaming community have been diverging in polarized directions regarding LGBTQ topics in video game culture. This article discusses the political potential of sharing comics and cartoons on Instagram when that practice lies in the intersection of autobiographical art, feminist activism, and for-profit influencer work. Through a case study of cartoonist Mary Catherine Starr, aka @momlife_comics, and the 2022 viral campaign against her work known as ‘Peachgate,’ the article discusses whether Starr’s work participates in a juxtapolitical intimate public or whether it holds the potential to incite more radical transformation of the gender dynamics it criticizes. Investigating Starr’s visual style and aesthetic strategies, as well as the platformed visibility labor she engages in, the article argues that Peachgate can be seen as an indication of the potential for this work to transform from an intimate public to an affective public, although only if allowed to circulate beyond the intentions and preferred interpretationsoffered by Starr. This article discusses the political potential of sharing comics and cartoons on Instagram when that practice lies in the intersection of autobiographical art, feminist activism, and for-profit influencer work.

    No full text
