Educational Hospitality at the Intersection of Forced Migration and Disability: Listening to the Voices of Ukrainian Refugee Children with Disabilities living in Germany
CONTEXT: As the global population of forcibly displaced individuals surpasses 110 million, nearly 40% are children, with many living with disabilities. The intersection of forced migration and disability often results in compounded experiences of exclusion and marginalization, particularly in educational settings. This issue has also been pronounced for Ukrainian refugee children with disabilities, whose unique needs are often overlooked. Existing literature has largely focused on either refugees or individuals with disabilities, neglecting the overlapping challenges faced by those who belong to both groups. This article addresses the gap by investigating the educational experiences of Ukrainian refugee children with disabilities in Germany, exploring how these children navigate education in the context of forced migration and disability.
APPROACH: The study is part of a broader mixed-methods research project that explores the educational trajectories and aspirations of Ukrainian refugee children with disabilities and their families. Five qualitative interviews were conducted with Ukrainian children aged 10 to 13, who are attending both mainstream and special schools in Germany. Using an inductive coding approach, the study analysed the children’s experiences and aspirations, with attention to their past and present educational contexts, as well as their dreams for the future.
FINDINGS: Two key themes emerged: ‘seeking recognition’ and ‘epistemic ignorance.’ The theme of ‘seeking recognition’ reflects the children’s desire to be seen and understood in their uniqueness, often confronting educational systems that fail to recognize their distinct needs and capabilities. Children reported feelings of injustice and exclusion when their achievements and identities were disregarded, particularly in relation to educational placement and discipline. ‘Epistemic ignorance’ highlights how educational institutions often overlook the knowledge and epistemic contributions refugee children with disabilities bring with them, focusing instead on perceived deficits. The children expressed frustration due to assumptions about their abilities, which resulted in a sense of disconnection and failure.
CONCLUSION: The study calls for an ethical and inclusive response to the educational needs of refugee children with disabilities, drawing on Levinas’ concept of the infinite responsibility for the Other. Addressing the intersectional challenges these children face requires educational systems to recognize their unique knowledge and experiences, offering what is termed ‘educational hospitality.’ This approach fosters inclusivity by respecting the distinct epistemes of refugee children with disabilities and ensuring they are truly seen and valued within their host educational systems
Helle Virkner: En moderne statsministerfrue
This study investigates Helle Virkner’s role as First Lady to the Danish Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag (1962-1972) – a role that was not fully established at Virkner’s time. The study examines how she formed and modernized the role of the First Lady through her actions, media awareness, and strategic staging. The analysis is divided into a private and public part based on Virkner’s memoirs and contemporary newspaper and magazine articles. The study investigates Virkner’s perception of the role, the press’ framing, and public expectations. While fulfilling traditional duties, Virkner also challenged them through her active societal engagement and strategic media use. The press portrayed her through gendered stereotypes and Americanized ideals. Judith Butler’s theory of performativity and Lisa M. Burns’ concepts of framing and feminization are introduced in the discussion to bring a new perspective on Virkner’s role as First Lady. The theories explain how her actions reproduce and challenge contemporary gender norms. The study concludes that Virkner was a central actor in defining the Danish First Lady balancing tradition and modernity while reshaping public perceptions of women’s roles. Her political influence was greater than previously assumed contributing to Krag’s successes and marking her as Denmark’s first modern First Lady
"Og dermed ligestillede": Hovedstadslønarbejderklassen i det 20. århundredes første halvdel
this article has shown that in the first half of the 20th century, a steadily growing working class and a rapidly growing lower-level civil servant class were formed in in the capital. Behind this was not only the continued industrialization of the period, but also the concentration of capital that was behind this process and was also embedded in the development of the capitalist market economy. Decisive for a growing private administrative sector, which included other manual tasks that were not directly part of production, but were crucial for it, as well as simple and routine administrative functions. tasks and functions that were carried out by a lower layer of civil servants who at most had a vocational education and were not granted any form of management powers. With the simultaneously emerging welfare state, corresponding tasks and functions were generated at the same time in the state and municipality and thus also the basis for the increase in the number of lower-level civil servants. By analyzing the living conditions indicators that the public statistics of the time provided insight into, the article has also documented that the working class and the lower-level civil servant class were subject to the same living conditions in terms of income, consumption patterns, housing conditions and, in all likelihood, also access to the school system, that gives exams, and cultural life. Together with the work-related functions, a distribution of living conditions that proves that a growing wage-earning class was formed in the capital of the period, comprising the working class and the lower-level civil servant class. The basis for the establishment of the early welfare state was a target group that was designated as “workers and thus equals”. A wage-earning class, as the article demonstrates, gradually came to include more than three-quarters of the working-age population in the capital and the provincial market towns, and which, together with the gradually established legal principle, argues that the welfare state acquired the universalistic character, traditionally attributed to the post-war welfare state, before the middle of the century. In this context, the article finally points out features of how the labor movement, through its trade union and corporate organizations and its political class alliance with homesteaders in the construction of the early welfare state in the period, attempted to create greater social equality through higher real wages, shorter working hours, and better living conditions for the very large population segment that made up the wage-earning class. greater equality, which the article argues for to a certain extent, was achieved in the period in terms of wages and hours, consumption patterns, and housing conditions, but not in terms of access to the school, that provides exams, and culture
Landskabet som metafor hos Henrik Pontoppidan
Abstract
It is well-known that landscapes play an important role in Henrik Pontoppidan´s works. But the landscapes are not only used by the author to create a backdrop for the plot, they are also part of a metaphorical deep structure in the texts. In this essay, Christian de Thurah examines one of Pontoppidan´s minor novels, Højsang, in order to show in detail how Pontoppidan made use of this metaphorical layer
