AbstractThis article presents an analysis of Henrik Pontoppidan’s short story collection Skyer (1906), focusing on the significance of the different landscapes within the narratives. It explores how the depiction of landscapes functions not merely as a backdrop, but as an active element that supports the thematic concerns of the stories. By examining the interplay between landscape and narrative, the article reveals how these descriptions illuminate the ideological tensions present in the text, offering insight into Pontoppidan’s engagement with the social and political conflicts of his time. The study argues that the landscapes in Skyer serve as both a reflection of the characters’ inner lives and as a (probably Pontoppidan´s) commentary on the broader societal shifts in Denmark during the provisional period in Denmark in the 1880s. In doing so, the article underscores the complex relationship between environment, identity, and political change in Pontoppidan’s work
Pontoppidan og rabbinerens datter
AbstractIn 1918, Henrik Pontontoppidan published a small text based on a holiday memoir. It is called The Priest´s Daugther and is about a young orthodox Jewish girl, who wants to spend her summer holiday at a seaside hotel in Blokhus, Denmark. It is not a success, she does not fit in and has to go back to her family before time. In this article, Henrik Loft Nielsen traces the story back to the summer of 1887, when Pontoppidan spent a prolonged holiday in Blokhus at the same time as a young Jewish girl from his native town, Randers. Loft Nielsen tells the girl´s story up to its sad ending in 1891.
On this holiday, Pontoppidan also met another young woman, AntoinetteKofoed, who was to become his second wife later. She too plays a part in the story.
In 1930 the short story was republished in a rewritten form and with the title The Rabbi´s Daugther
