The relationship between the Beighton score and the functional movement screen in collegiate D-III athletes
The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of hypermobility and its effects on functional movement patterns in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-III (DIII) college athletes. Existing research is divided on hypermobility rates in university-aged populations and few have focused on NCAA D-III athletes specifically. Additionally, little is known about the relationship between hypermobility and functional movement patterns in this population even though it is the largest division in the NCAA and hypermobility may impact injury risk. Subjects were asked to complete a demographics questionnaire and then perform two movement screenings to observe mobility and movement patterns. Mobility was assessed through a self-reported nine-point Beighton Score, a survey that observes passive joint movement abilities to classify mobility status.. Functional movement patterns were assessed through the functional movement screen (FMS). The mean FMS score of hypermobile (n=3) subjects (14.33±1.15) was not significantly different than that of non-hypermobile (n=16) (16.29±1.9). The findings of this study suggest that the prevalence of hypermobility in this population is about 15%, and that there are no significant differences in functional movement between hypermobile and non-hypermobile individuals
Pod-ifying Mass Media: An exploration of journalistic integrity in podcasting
Podcasting is a rapidly growing form of media that has expanded into nearly every genre of consumption from news to comedy to sports. It operates similarly to on-demand television or television streaming, though its reach has the potential to be much greater due to its on-demand structure. In past studies, audio has been found to be one of the most effective mediums of communication. As a result, it is my belief that the medium has the ability to shape the perceptions of large groups of people, and specific niches, leading them to opinions that are at times inaccurate, misguided, or harmful in some capacity. This phenomenon is heightened by the unique features of podcasting, which simultaneously make it more accessible while also restricting its ability to be regulated and monitored. This presents a compelling debate on free speech and journalistic integrity, which will be argued and defended in this article. This thesis will utilize a text-based analysis using two case studies analyzed according to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. It will advance the SPJ’s code in order to address the unique ethical concerns that plague the podcasting industry at present and set a blueprint for journalistic podcasts dealing with newsworthy current events
Relationship Between Outdoor Recreation Activity and Physical and Mental Health
Mental and physical health are important aspects of our lives, and maintenance of them is crucial to sustain or improve one’s quantity and quality of life. Research shows that Americans suffer greatly from physical and mental health related complications. Mental illness and chronic disease runs rampant in our society, and this is an issue that needs immediate attention. The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in outdoor activities affected physical and mental health. Based on existing research, it was hypothesized that the frequency of outdoor activity participation would have a positive correlation with more favorable physical and mental health measures. Participants included students, faculty, and staff at the University of Lynchburg who consented to participation, filled out a survey assessing outdoor activity participation and levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and self-efficacy. They then reported for in person assessment of physical health measures including resting heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate as well as height, weight, body mass index, basal metabolic rate, and body fat percentage and distribution. The present study found that basal metabolic rate and anxiety each have a significant correlation to frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly) of outdoor activity participation. Daily participants displayed higher BMR values, on average, than those who indicated weekly participation, meaning that daily outdoor activity participants are burning more calories per day at rest than weekly participants. Daily participation was associated with lower levels of anxiety than monthly participation. The results of this study could be used to guide further research on these topics and to educate people on their options when it comes to treating or improving their physical and mental health.
