Integrating NCSS Notable Trade Books into Elementary Social Studies Classrooms
Each year the NCSS Notable Trade Book Committee selects “books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text. Each book is read by several reviewers, and books are included on the list by committee assent” (NCSS, 2023). In this session presenters will show participants how to access the current and previous lists of NCSS Notable Trade Books. Presenters will share ideas for how to integrate several award winners into elementary classrooms. The lessons will be based on the C3 Framework and will include suggestions for how to take informed action for our youngest learners. All lessons, resources, and ideas will be provided for participants
Creating a Portable Package for Visualizing Categorical Time-series Data
Many tools for visualizing large datasets require the use of specific hardware and software. The aim for this project is to create software for visualizing large datasets without having to worry about specific hardware. We document our work building a portable package for visualizing large categorical time-series data sets. The package is built in C# utilizing the ScottPlot library on the Windows Forms framework. We have implemented a number of visualizations in this tool and will demonstrate our prototype system. The visualizations are created by processing files into a “series” that is used to generate the proper data which can then be fed to a number of graphs to draw different types of visualizations. The tool contains graphs that display total instance counts of characters in a dataset, frequency counts of characters in a dataset, and comparisons of character sequences between parts of a dataset
Empathy, Resilience, and Compassion Fatigue as Predictors of Virginia PreK-12 Teachers’ Compassion Satisfaction, Life Satisfaction, Happiness, and Job Turnover Intentions
There is a growing teacher shortage and many have highlighted burnout as a primary reason for exiting the profession. Furthermore, compassion fatigue has been identified as a specific type of burnout that teachers often face due to the nature of it being a helping profession. Alongside compassion fatigue, resilience and empathy have been shown to be related to teachers’ overall well-being and desire to remain in the field. There has been an abundance of research from 2020 to 2023 looking at similar variables in teachers during the pandemic; however, there is a dearth of research that explicitly examines empathy, resilience, and compassion fatigue (burnout) as predictors of several dimensions of teachers well-being, including compassion satisfaction (job satisfaction), life satisfaction, happiness, and turnover intentions. It was found that teachers’ compassion fatigue is a significant predictor of their compassion satisfaction, life satisfaction, happiness, and turnover intentions. It was also found that teachers’ resilience is a significant predictor of their happiness. These results help us to determine some key factors that tend to impact emotional contentment and overall happiness in teachers, which allows us to understand what might be the leading factors of teachers deciding to leave the classroom
Diversity in the Workplace
Many males in nursing have been treated differently than female nurses at some point in their careers; it may be from colleagues or patients. The literature review conducted focused on how patients perceive male nurses and examined if there is a difference in the treatment of male versus female nurses. Moreover, the nursing profession has been predominantly female; however, it has become more common for males to seek this career in recent years. Research studies focused on how the adverse treatment affected the males in nursing, such as their chosen specialty, and whether they still enjoyed being a nurse through the hardships. Through understanding what research has been conducted, a PICOT question was developed that allows for an examination of each of these points. The PICOT question is, how are males with a nursing background perceived by patients during their hospitalization? In conclusion, this literature review aims to discuss the gender gap in the nursing profession. The findings conclude that male nurses face many gender stereotypes and are often excluded from female-oriented units such as labor and delivery. The research concludes that most patients are satisfied with male nurses while others imply a non-caring image of male nurses. Recommendations for improved practice include implementing mentorship programs to provide male nurse role models and improve social media portrayals of male nurses. Overall, the gender gap in the nursing profession needs to be addressed so changes can be implemented to create a more diverse establishment
Impact Mitigation Properties of Youth and Adult Ice Hockey Helmets
Current youth ice hockey helmets are similar in design and are tested under the same standard as adult ice hockey helmets. Our study will evaluate the impact performance of youth and adult ice hockey helmets. Three new youth ice hockey helmet models (Bauer ReAKT 100, Bauer, Exeter, NH) were compared to three new adult ice hockey helmet models (Bauer ReAKT 95) using a twin-wire guided drop rig. Helmets were fitted according to manufacturer instructions to a modified National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) headform (size small for youth helmets, size medium for adult helmets) mounted on a NOCSAE standard male neck using the NOCSAE standard head bracket and pin. We completed three trials of impacts at four locations (front, right front boss, side, rear) on each of the helmet shells at 4.5 m/s, for a total of 108 impact tests. Peak linear acceleration (PLA), Head Injury Criterion (HIC-15), and Gadd Severity Index (GSI) were calculated for each test and compared between the youth and adult helmets. Giberellin and Plant Height in Brassica Rapa
Brassica rapa is a small flowering plant that is often used in classroom experiments due to its small size, low-maintenance growing conditions, and quick life cycle. Several mutant lines have been bred and briefly described, although not much is known about the actual genetic changes and therefore all the downstream effects of that mutation. Nine different mutant lines of Brassica rapa were grown to more carefully identify the phenotypes affected by the mutations. Tall mutants were grown over 3 weeks and the plant height and the approximate areas of the plant cotyledons were measured.The results of this experiment did not support our hypothesis that the overproduction of Gibberellin causes elongation and larger cotyledons of Brassica rapa. Instead, the data displayed that the cotyledon size of the mutant plants was significantly smaller than that of the wild type

Several mutant lines have been bred and briefly described, although not much is known about the actual genetic changes and therefore all the downstream effects of that mutation. Nine different mutant lines of Brassica rapa were grown to more carefully identify the phenotypes affected by the mutations. The Petite variety was grown over the course of six weeks and overall height and photosynthesis rate were measured. The conclusion of our research showed that the standard plants were significantly taller than the Petite variants. The wild type rate of photosynthesis was significantly faster in the wild type versus the mutants. This research supports our hypothesis
