Evaluating the Effectiveness of ChatGPT in Solving Math Problems Across Varying Levels of Difficulty and Its Implications on Education
This project aims to make the literature on LLMs, like ChatGPT, more accessible, while also evaluating its effectiveness in solving math problems of varying difficulty. In order to achieve this, I generated and ranked math problems based on their difficulty and the analysis/steps required to complete them correctly. From there, these problems were inputted into ChatGPT to be solved, and patterns of error were documented in order to see what steps or sections of these problems were conducted incorrectly. Additionally, analysis of this information allowed me to determine the benefits of ChatGPT and what areas still need improvement, in terms of mathematical problem solving. Then, based on my findings, I discussed ChatGPT’s implications on math education, and presented ways to turn it into a “teaching tool” rather than a “cheating tool.” Ultimately, this evaluation is essential because of the popularity the service has gained, especially with students, who should be more knowledgeable about the tool that they rely on to complete tasks

Direct Functional Comparison of Murine Macrophages: BMDM, RAW 264.7 and J774A.1
This study conducts a comprehensive functional comparison between the widely used RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cell line, J774A.1 macrophage cell line and primary bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). Macrophages play essential roles in innate immunity, inflammation regulation, antigen presentation, and tissue homeostasis, making them critical subjects in immunological research. While RAW 264.7 cells offer experimental advantages in accessibility and reproducibility, previous research has identified significant differences between immortalized lines and primary cells in cytokine production profiles and inflammatory responses. This investigation addresses a fundamental methodological question in immunology research by directly comparing canonical macrophage functions—including nitric oxide production, TNF-α secretion, and iNOS expression—following lipopolysaccharide stimulation. Our experimental design included a RAW 264.7 LPS dose-response assay measuring nitric oxide production at various LPS concentrations (0, 1, 10, and 100 ng/mL). Macrophage function is evaluated by nitric oxide production using the Greiss reaction. For total nitrite RAW 264.7 and J774A.1 cells respond at equivalent levels, while BMDM appears to respond less vigorously. When response is adjusted to nitrite levels per 10,000 cells the RAW 264.7 cells have a greater response than either J774A.1 or BMDM. These differences could be due to two factors. Variability in generating accurate cell counts following experimental treatment with LPS is one problem. Additionally, metabolic activity in these different cell types could account for differences in response depending upon how that response is quantified. More accurate measures of cell counts are necessary to determine if the differences we observed are real or just a remnant of cell counting variability
Paintings: Blue Words
Blue Words is a series of paintings that explores the importance of identity, self-perception, and the power of subtlety in communication through contemporary self-portraiture. This series was created after recovering from an illness in which I was unable to speak for weeks, leaving me to heavily rely on body language as a way to communicate with my family. During my recovery, I used these paintings as a way to reflect on my exploration of the silent language of expression and its ability to convey complex emotions. Ultimately, the process of creating these paintings directly influenced the development of my capstone project, which focuses on themes of self-growth and identity through body language and personal style. Through this series, I was able to rediscover and reframe parts of myself, all while reflecting on familial relationships and their impact on the self. The figures in this series are painted solely in Phthalo Blue, a color I naturally gravitated toward, associating it with comfort. Executed in acrylic, the bold colors of the backgrounds emphasize the blue subjects, highlighting their various moods and expressions. Each piece aims to welcome the viewer into a surreal world where color, distorted perspectives, and dreamlike imagery evoke both introspection and emotional release
The Impact of Outside Stimulus on Performance in Mid Distance Athletes
Running performance is affected by multiple factors working together to produce a successful athlete. This study will examine the physiological and performance responses to varying stimuli among division III collegiate middle distance runners. Performance during this test will be partially impacted by how subjects enable themselves to keep going throughout the trials. Participants include no more than twenty males and females from the University of Lynchburg’s track team. Two eight-minute-long trials will be performed in a randomized order on a treadmill, including one with uptempo music and regular verbal encouragement and one with silence. Pre-test questions will assess participant’s headspace. Heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion will be collected throughout both trials. Participants will be blinded to the treadmill display, such that they can only see time elapsed but not speed, distance traveled, or heart rate. The treadmill’s speed is controlled freely by the participant with an incline of 0.5% held constant. Participants are instructed to run as far as they are able within the eight minute period. This study’s data collection is ongoing and will be analyzed upon completion. This research is imperative to help understand how external factors can impact the athletes’ performances

BIOL 114: The Effect of simulated herbivory on Arabidopsis thaliana growth and development
Studies have shown that plants develop overcompensation defense mechanisms in response to herbivory. Due to how insects tend to feed on plants, leaves are exposed to degradation. In order to analyze the defense mechanisms, Arabidopsis thaliana was grown for 5 weeks and then herbivory was simulated by cutting 2 leaves per plant and then measuring growth again after 2 weeks. Both wild type and a mutant Arabidopsis was grown to see how the mutation affected its response. The growth and response of normal and mutant plants to simulated herbivory damage was evaluated and analyzed. Results have shown that even though there was a significant difference in the number of leaves in the wild type control group compared to the wild type plants that were cut, the mutant plants that sustained damage responded in a similar way to the mutant control group even though they were not damaged. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the number of leaves growth in both wild type and mutant experimental groups. This demonstrates that plants exposed to simulated herbivory are capable of compensating leaf growth as if it was not damaged and suggests that the mutated gene might be involved in herbivory response
