    Mind Games: The Psychological Fallout of Sudden Job Loss and Survivor Syndrome in Academia

    Financial strain often results in mass layoffs, impacting both displaced employees ( victims ) and retained staff ( survivors ). As this phenomenon has become increasingly relevant in academia, a recent large-scale downsizing at a small liberal arts university provided an opportunity for real-time study. This project examined mental health outcomes among survivors, victims, and a control group unaffected by layoffs. Depression, anxiety, and stress were measured using the DASS, while substance use and sleep quality were assessed via the ASSIST and PSQI. Mental health care-seeking behavior was also analyzed. Findings are expected to show increased distress, substance use, and reduced sleep quality among both victims and survivors. Data collection concludes March 17th, offering timely insights into layoffs’ psychological effects in academia

    The Effects of Stress on Injury and Sickness Rates of Middle-distance and Distance D3 Athletes

    A runner intentionally stresses their body to experience an adaptation, however, issues occur when the body does not have time to recover. Male athletes (n = 14) on the University of Lynchburg’s distance and middle-distance team participated in this study. For 6 weeks, heart rate variability (HRV4training app), resting heart rate, perceived stress, and cortisol levels were assessed as indicators of recovery and stress. It was anticipated that indicators of physical stress such as higher resting heart rates and higher cortisol levels, would correspond with greater perceived stress and higher occurrence of injury and sickness. Cortisol (n = 2, p = 0.449), heart rate variability (p = 0.59), and perceived stress (p = 0.31) did not significantly differ across the six weeks. Resting heart rate did show significant changes across time (p = 0.006, week 1: 46.2±9.3 bpm vs week 6: 53.1±12.1 bpm). Analyses related to injury and illness occurrence are ongoing. This information is useful as more measures can be implemented to predict and prevent injuries before they take place in the athletic realm. Future research should examine these variables over a full calendar year to examine all seasons

    Examination of C8-D1a Astrocytes to Pro-inflammatory Stimuli

    Neuroinflammation is a complex synergy of many different cells within the central nervous system. Astrocytes play a key role in the maintenance of neural functioning, but take a special part in the inflammatory process as well. By releasing pro-inflammatory modulators like cytokines, chemokines, and reactive oxygen species, astrocytes modulate the inflammatory response in the brain. Astrocytes can be activated into this proinflammatory state in response to pathogenic molecules such as bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Lipopolysaccharides are glycoproteins derived from gram negative bacteria and commonly used to stimulate cells in vitro to produce an inflammatory response. To look at the effects of LPS on astrocyte inflammation, C8-D1a neonatal murine astrocytes were stimulated dose responsively from 0 - 1000 ng/mL. No significant change in nitric oxide production as measured by the Greiss reaction or in the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-ɑ was observed through multiple trials. These results are inconsistent within the published literature on astrocyte inflammation, thus more exploration is necessary to deduce the true effects of bacterial stimulation on astrocytes

    Examining Special Populations in Gifted Education

    Gifted learners are a diverse group with unique characteristics and needs that require specialized identification, assessment, and programming. This portfolio explores gifted special populations, including Native American/Indigenous students, African American students, Hispanic/Latino/a/x students, English Learners/Multilingual learners, twice-exceptional students, financially under-resourced and rural students, creatively gifted students, as well as highly gifted learners. Each section delves into the defining characteristics of these populations, shedding light on the challenges and strengths that differentiate them from the general gifted population. Programming strategies tailored to the needs of each population are also examined, emphasizing differentiation, acceleration, enrichment, and social-emotional support. Specific teaching practices, such as scaffolding, culturally responsive pedagogy, and strength-based approaches, are recommended to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Additionally, the portfolio highlights interventions that offer support, ensuring that gifted students thrive across various domains.Identification and assessment are also critical to ensuring appropriate support for gifted special populations. This portfolio reviews the effectiveness of current programming methods, and offers additional strategies to support underrepresented gifted learners, giving educators the ability to better recognize and nurture gifted potential in these diverse student groups. By addressing the complexities of gifted special populations, this portfolio serves as a comprehensive resource for educators, administrators, and policymakers seeking to enhance services and opportunities for all gifted learners

    Building up Borders: Political Framing and Anti-Immigration Attitudes in Hungary and the United States

    In the Summer of 2015, the European Union was faced with an unprecedented immigration crisis. In response, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán unleashed a vigorous anti-immigration campaign, focusing on the cultural, security, and economic threats that Hungary would be burdened with. This was done through negative political framing, via Orbán’s speech acts, the governing Fidesz-KDNP’s political propaganda, and the government’s control of the media. Furthermore, since 2016, the United States has experienced its own issue with immigration. This topic became and has remained one of the most salient for Donald Trump’s three presidential campaigns. Like Orbán, Trump has used negative political framing, via similar methods, such as speech acts, propaganda, and supportive media. The question of this research is to determine whether Orbán’s negative framing influenced Hungarian society and led to increased anti-immigrant and xenophobic attitudes, or not, along with increased securitization of the state and normalization of border-line rhetoric; this goal remains the same for the section on the United States and Donald Trump. Throughout this research, the data, which is supported by qualitative information and examples, would suggest that anti-immigrant and xenophobic attitudes did increase as a result of both Orbán and Trump’s anti-immigration campaign

    Increasing the accuracy, automaticity, and expression (also known as fluency) at which students read in 1st and 2nd grade is incredibly important for ensuring continued strength in reading abilities. In this session, educaors will gain knowledge on strategies to help students improve their reading fluency, as well as interesting and engaging ways to teach some of these strategies to students, and ways to access appropriate texts for students to read while engaging in fluency practice. Increased fluency is essential to improving reading comprehension and engagement. As educators, it is our job to push our primary students past decoding every word that they encounter when reading and into the world of reading fluently

    Biodegradation of Polypropylene due to Bacterial Colonization Plastic debris has been an environmental problem for nearly a century; though, recent literature shows certain bacterial strains have degradation abilities. However, little research has been done on a community of bacteria found on the plastics within Rochester. Here, we isolated three strains of bacteria, Citrobacter freundii, Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas, found in the Rochester, NY area from polypropylene and tested their biodegradation ability when combined. By isolating these different strains of bacteria from both a local pond and tributary allows us to observe the effect of the local bacterial community on polypropylene degradation within the environment. Degradation is taking place as seen by slight oxidation being observed through FTIR, biofilm has also been observed on the incubated samples possibly meaning that there is interaction. This research allows for better understanding of how particular bacterial strains that are local to the Rochester area can be used to degrade polypropylene within the environment

    Comparative Effectiveness Of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) VS. Standard Culture Testing In Treatment Of Group B Streptococcus In Pregnant Women.

    An abundant amount of complications can arise during labor and delivery, in which a handful of them are preventable. This literature review explores the effectiveness of Penicillin versus secondary antibiotics in treating Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection in pregnant women during labor. GBS is the leading cause of neonatal infection and mortality, with Penicillin being the first-line prophylaxis treatment. As of 2024, GBS is also the leading cause of early neonatal sepsis in the United States due to intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis not being implemented. By examining existing research from 2019-2023, extensive knowledge was found regarding effective and non-effective treatment of GBS. This research evaluates infection rates, neonatal morbidity and mortality, and maternal side effects, associated with Penicillin and secondary antibiotics. This literature’s evidence supports that secondary antibiotics are not as effective as Penicillin in preventing neonatal Group B Streptococcus infection, due to differences in their antimicrobial properties. These findings highlight the importance of identifying and implementing the most effective antibiotics for infant GBS contraction prevention, which will ultimately help reduce mortality rates associated with the disease. Identifying and implementing the most effective antibiotics will also significantly reduce, if not eliminate the incidence of newborn GBS infection.     Chronic Disease Management: Self-Management Strategies for Diabetes: Evaluating the effectiveness of various self-management techniques and educational programs

    Issues for individuals with Diabetes in lower socioeconomic backgrounds affect the ability to access insulin consistently and affordably. Through the analysis of peer reviewed articles and scientific studies we will expose social class differences and show the relationship between this data and the ability of low-income diabetic patients to access insulin. Research shows that a person who has a lower income has to work four to seven days to buy just 10 mL of insulin. The literature reveals that uninsured Americans with Diabetes are more likely to be using less effective and cheaper formulas of insulin, compared to people in the upper-class, or with private insurance. Not having consistent access to insulin ultimately leads to poor management of diabetes, which affects other areas of health. The goal of our research is to look specifically into trends that pertain to obstructions in receiving insulin products due to socioeconomic components and to propose goals for the reduction of the barriers to accessing insulin. Diabetes does not discriminate, and one’s access to insulin is heavily dependent on socioeconomic status. Individuals may not be aware of available resources to help receive insulin. When insulin is not used consistently or properly, poor disease management presents as other health issues that have the potential to require additional medication attention. Solutions must be found to combat these barriers of accessing insulin

    How do mothers experiencing mental health challenges perceive and understand infant development and attachment during the first year postpartum?

    This study examines the relations between new mothers facing mental health challenges, such as postpartum depression and anxiety, maternal-infant bonding, and infant development within the first year postpartum. Research articles from 2019 to 2024 found that maternal mental health challenges often lead to mothers misinterpreting their infant’s behavior and development and can lead to uncertainty surrounding the mother’s perception of her ability to care for the infant adequately. Studying the mother’s perceptions can lead us to understand how mental health challenges correlate to maternal-infant attachment and how this may affect their infant’s development, as well as the consequences of deficient psychological health on parenting behavior. This study incorporates the impact of these challenges, the ability to form secure attachments, and the ability to respond effectively to the infant’s needs. Understanding the correlation between the difficulties faced and what it means for new mothers can help healthcare professionals better support them and, in turn, promote healthy infant attachment and decrease poor maternal experiences surrounding mental health. Addressing maternal mental health while promoting infant attachment and development exhibits improvement in maternal responsiveness and overall mother-infant bonding. This research emphasizes the need for integrated mental health and infant care strategies in the early postpartum period to support maternal well-being and optimal infant outcomes
