The Biomechanical Analysis of Cleat vs Trainers on Running Form in Soccer Athletes
Anterior and posterior tibial stress injuries in soccer athletes are prevalent, especially during collegiate preseason training. During soccer preseason, there is typically an increase in the volume and intensity of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning as well as increased focus on soccer-specific skill and technique development compared to the summer off-season training. In addition to this increase in physical demand, players often transition from wearing predominantly running shoes (i.e. trainers) to cleats. The structural differences of these pieces of footwear vary greatly and could lead to different biomechanical stresses to the lower limb. In this study, we tested 17 female and 9 male Division III collegiate soccer athletes using RunScribe shoe pods to examine biomechanical differences during jogging and sprinting in cleats versus trainers. The main purpose of this study was to examine the differences in foot biomechanics between cleats and running shoes in female and male NCAA collegiate soccer athletes. A Comparison of Muscular Strength and Power Development In Unilateral and Bilateral Lower Body Exercises
The purpose of this study was to compare neural development in the form of strength and absolute power following training programs that involve unilateral and bilateral lower body exercises. A randomized between-groups research design was used in which results from a pretest and posttest were compared across the unilateral and bilateral groups. Sled machine 1-RM testing was used as a measure of strength and CMVJ testing was used as a measure of absolute power. The exercise intervention period required participants to complete a variation of squats, sled machine pushes, deadlift, and box step-ups utilizing one or both legs. The specific variation of exercises for each participant was determined by randomized placement into one of the two groups. The training period was split into thirteen total sessions involving 1 preliminary testing session and 12 exercise sessions. The sessions were held three times per week for a total of four weeks. As the data collection process is still underway, definitive results are not yet available. Findings from this research are applicable to resistance training exercise prescription as they may suggest that the use of one kind of exercise is more effective in enhancing muscular strength and power than the other
Youth Sport Specialization Effects on Lower Extremity Injuries: A Critically Appraised Topic
Clinical scenario: Youth sport specialization is a growing trend in the United States. This trend may be due to the popular belief that youth sport specialization may lead to opportunities such as college scholarships and becoming a professional athlete. While there is no exact definition of youth sport specialization, many researchers define youth sport specialization as year-round training in a single sport. There is a considerable amount of debate about the benefits and potential negative side effects of youth sport specialization, particularly regarding orthopedic injury rates. Athletic trainers work in a variety of settings including youth sports. Because of this, athletic trainers and sports medicine professionals should be aware of the outcomes of youth sport specialization so that they can ensure quality patient care, improve parent education, and implement injury prevention strategies. Lower extremity injuries are the most common sport-related injuries with the knee accounting for 66% of these cases. Knee injuries not only impose significant costs to patients but may lead to long-term health outcomes, loss of time spent at school, and lost opportunities to participate in sports. Clinical Question: Does youth sport specialization participation have an effect on lower extremity injury rates compared to non-specialized youth athletes? Summary of key findings: The majority of the research articles we have examined found that youth sports specialization leads to an increased risk for lower extremity injury. Clinical bottom line: Most researchers do not recommend sport specialization before the ages 14-16 years of age to minimize the risk of injury
