Brief Overview of Assessment and Prognostication Tools for Palliative Care Oncology Patients

    No full text
Patients with life-threatening illnesses can be at risk for the progression of their disease over time. Consequences of such an illness can include recurrent hospitalizations, poor symptom control, and a lack of understanding by the patient and family of the disease, its usual course, and prognosis. Palliative care is a philosophy of care intended to address these issues. While receiving palliative care, patients can continue to undergo treatments directed at a cure, whereas hospice patients no longer receive treatment for underlying diseases. Both approaches focus on symptom control. To best care for palliative patients over time, several outcome domains should be routinely assessed to ensure the highest quality of life and well-being. While palliative care focuses on the whole patient, this article focuses on assessment tools for symptoms, functional status, pain, and prognosticatio

Weight-Loss Efficacy of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Relative to Lifestyle-Based Interventions

    No full text
ABSTRACT This clinical review compares the effectiveness of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) with traditional lifestyle modifications in managing obesity. This article also examines barriers to accessing the medications in both civilian and veteran populations. This clinical review was conducted through a wide-ranging review of the published literature, including clinical trials, observational studies, and review articles on lifestyle modifications, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and barriers to obesity treatment. While lifestyle modifications are generally considered a first-line approach and are cost-effective, they tend to yield only modest weight loss. In contrast, GLP-1 RAs offer significantly greater reductions in body weight as evidenced by recent clinical trials. These medications can have minor but uncomfortable side effects and offer benefits beyond weight loss. Despite their effectiveness, many patients struggle to obtain these medications due to high costs and stringent insurance requirements. Access is particularly challenging within the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where patients may wait months to complete mandatory lifestyle-modification classes before becoming eligible. This review also emphasizes the need for further research comparing GLP-1 RAs directly with lifestyle interventions, exploring combined treatment approaches, and assessing long-term cost-effectiveness. Ultimately, GLP-1 Medications provide superior weight-loss outcomes, and overcoming barriers to access is crucial to optimizing patient care

An Alternative to the Use of GPA to Determine Class Rank

    No full text
A student’s GPA is routinely used to determine eligibility for internships, academic awards, scholarships and fulltime employment. Unfortunately, GPA is a flawed measure of student achievement due to the variability in difficulty among college-level courses. Students who take classes with a grade distribution that is skewed towards higher grades will have a higher GPA than students who are primarily enrolled in courses that are skewed towards lower grades. Because of this discrepancy, many strong students have a lower GPA than they ought to when compared to their peers. To address this, we propose using the Elo rating system that is used to measure the strength of chess players in international tournaments to provide a more accurate measure. Chess player ratings are so accurate that they can be used very effectively to predict the outcome of games based solely on the difference between the ratings of two players. The Elo rating system has also been adopted in several other fields to great success. We have written computer simulations to demonstrate the efficacy of this system when applied to a college curriculum

From Plushies to Partnerships: The Impact of Childhood Comfort Objects on Adult Attachments

    No full text
Early childhood comfort objects, such as stuffed animals and blankets, have historically provided emotional security. However, their long-term psychological effects remain under-examined. This study explored whether or not early childhood attachment to comfort objects predicts adult attachment style. Drawing on attachment theory, 128 participants completed measures for childhood comfort object attachment, adult attachment style, and parent attachment. Statistical comparisons will determine correlations between early attachment to objects and secure, anxious, or avoidant adult attachment patterns. Findings might highlight how early non-human attachment influences relational dynamics, including emotion regulation and treatment interventions

Examining the Strategies and Importance of Formula 1 to enter the US Market

    No full text
Formula 1 (F1), the pinnacle of motorsport, has a rich history dating back to 1950. As a global spectacle, F1 attracts millions of fans worldwide, with races held in iconic locations around the globe. However, the sport faced challenges in the early 2010s, including declining viewership and a perceived lack of accessibility. To revitalize F1, Liberty Media acquired the sport in 2017. A major media conglomerate with a history of successful acquisitions, Liberty Media sought to leverage its expertise in content creation and distribution to transform F1 into a more engaging and accessible global brand. With a focus on enhancing fan experience and expanding the sport\u27s reach, Liberty Media embarked on a comprehensive marketing strategy to reposition F1 for the modern era. One of the key areas where Liberty Media sought to make a significant impact was in digital media. Recognizing the growing importance of online platforms, Liberty Media invested heavily in creating engaging content for F1\u27s digital channels. The goal of my research is to analyze the different techniques they used, as well as what the sport needs to do to expand into the US market. I will compare the previous strategies, as well as their comparison to already established US motrosport. There is an inherent value for European established sports to enter the US market

Language as a Diagnostic Tool in Medicine

    No full text
The increasingly globalized landscape of our society today requires that many industries change to meet the needs of multilingual and multicultural consumers. While commercial enterprises seem to be adapting to this need to provide services for a wide variety of individuals, the medical system of the United States has been slow to adopt changes to better serve the entire US population, not just the English-speaking population. Medical interpretation services are a popular solution to overcoming language barriers between medical professionals and patients; however, significant flaws in these systems, such as prolonged appointment duration and lack of regulatory standards, indicate that the use of external interpretation systems is not a sustainable long-term solution. This thesis examines the current services offered by medical professionals to non-English speakers while evaluating if instituting language requirements among healthcare professionals could serve as a long-term solution to provide higher quality care for non-English speakers. This paper investigates the possible effects of increased numbers of bilingual healthcare providers. Through reviewing the effects of second-language acquisition on both the brain and the ability to communicate, as well as interviews with multilingual medical professionals, this research suggests that bilingual medical professionals demonstrate enhanced cognitive capabilities and greater empathy in comparison to monolingual counterparts. Not only would increased numbers of bilingual healthcare professionals benefit English-speaking communities by improving overall communication quality, but they could serve as a long-term solution in providing consistent access and equitable access to quality healthcare services for non-English speakers

Espionage and Counterintelligence During the Cold War

    No full text
This project will explore notable cases of espionage against the United States during the 1980s-1990s and how counterintelligence served as a tool for identification. It is going to include case studies on Aldrich Ames, who spied for the Russians from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); Robert Hanssen, who committed espionage against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Russia’s behalf; Ana Montes, who worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as a Cuban spy; and John Anthony Walker, who sold U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union as a Navy Warrant Officer. The hypothesis that will be tested is why people choose to spy through the lens of monetary gain and workplace disgruntlement
