The Diary of a Mad Black Woman : An Analysis of Film and Anger
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to explore the connection between the angry black woman stereotype in film and reality. This study examined the definition of anger and what it looks like. The researcher hypothesized the presumed misinterpreted behavior of black women in popular media; 1) the role of an angry black woman in film is often exaggerated for entertainment purposes, and 2) anger is often a secondary emotion to fear and sadness. Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman was analyzed as an artifact of popular media for signs of anger in Black Women mentally, physically, and emotionally. Portraiture was used as a methodology to distinguish how Perry used a sense of familiarity to reach his audience (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997). He painted his characters with their clothing, body types, and skin tones as an artist paints a portrait with line, shape, and color. Research depicts anger is often an emotional response to shame and fear; Black anger, however, is often a response to white supremacy and injustices. Findings show the angry Black woman stereotype dated back to times of slavery as a form of control over Black women. In the 1960’s, Malcom X, a prolific leader in the black community noted “the most disrespected person in America is the Black woman” (Wilson, 2021). Black women’s resilience and strength is often misinterpreted as irrational aggression. Two Jews, Three Opinions: An Exploration of Young American Jewish Perspectives on Israel
Get PDFIn recent decades, there has been a lot of speculation and general hand-wringing from Jewish leadership about American Jews, and particularly young American Jews, and their increasing apathy towards Israel. Jewish leaders, both at the individual and institutional level, worry that there seems to be a clear generational gap in concern for and engagement with Israel as a central feature of Jewish identity. This research will aim to gauge the extent to which this is true and whether colleges are impacting American Jews’ views on Israel. I will conduct a series of extensive interviews with Jewish high school and college students to see if there is significant difference between how the two groups respond. The primary form of data collection consists of interviews with both high school and university students about their perceptions of Israel and any self-reported changes in viewpoint
A Content Analysis of Political Discourse on TikTok
Get PDFThere is a gap in research about political discourse taking place on the social media platform TikTok. Traditionally, the public saw this platform as trivial and less important than other platforms because of its young user base. With the increase of political videos on this platform within the past few years, scholars are now beginning to observe this platform more seriously. This study aims to recognize how TikTok influences political discourse. A content analysis examined 500 videos under the hashtags, “politics” (10.0 B views), “conservative” (6.9 B views), “republican” (7.0 B views), “Trump” (7.2 B views) “democrat” (4.2 B views) and “leftist” (2.3 B views). The researcher made two accounts to engage with left-leaning and right-leaning videos separately. The results showed that creators on the platform made videos that lead to the further polarization of political parties. The results also suggest that TikTok’s algorithm creates online echo chambers, leading to users becoming radicalized on either side of the political spectrum
Pornography, the LGBTQ+ Community, and the Queer Alternative
Get PDFPornography is a complicated and controversial topic. Much has been said about how porn may or may not affect individuals, but very little has been done in the academic community on how pornography affects the LGBTQ+ community. In debates of censorship and regulation of porn, their voices are often ignored in public debate in favor of straight, feminist, or puritanical, religious discourses. This is problematic because pornography, particularly queer pornography, has done much for the evolution and self-affirmation of the LGBTQ+ community. It would be remiss if such positive effects of such a controversial exploit were to go unacknowledged. In conjunction with my academic readings, I interviewed a contact in the queer porn and Burlesque world named Max Shaw to better understand the finer points of queer porn production and the effects it has on its participators and viewers. Interestingly, the interview often lined up with themes that occurred in some of the more current literature referencing queer porn while giving a specific emphasis on the current issue of censorship of LGBTQ+ sexuality in the public and private spheres as well as an intersectional analysis of the queer porn industry. I will break down my research into three sections beginning with issues of mainstream porn for LGBTQ+ individuals. Then, I will shift to queer porn and discuss how it differs from mainstream porn and how those differences make it a better alternative to the current mainstream LGBTQ+ porn categories. Finally, I will discuss the issues of censorship that have arisen, as well as the merits of porn literacy programs and how they might help dispel some of the main concerns people have over adolescents’ access to pornography
Creative Writing in Multiple Mediums
No full text“Creative Writing Across Multiple Mediums” features three stories about three women from consecutive generations within a family. Each story is presented in a different medium. The grandmother’s story, which is on a podcast, tells the tale of how she raised her daughter on her own after her husband dies. The mother’s story, told in the form of journal and blog entries, is about how she got pregnant and the father left her; she ends up leaving her daughter with her mother (the grandmother from the podcast) to raise. The daughter’s story is interactive for the reader in which they get to choose whether or not to let her mother back in her life. Through these stories, I have explored the dynamics between three women from the same family, especially in how trauma has affected each. Additionally, each story is told in different formats that changes how the story is received by a reader
The World’s Largest Airline: How Aeroflot Learned to Stop Worrying and Became a Corporation
Get PDFSimilar to sex, the Soviet Union did not have corporations. The famous utterance from the Gorbachev era about a sexless Soviet existence suggests how we might approach what happened to the corporation in Soviet history. Like explicit sex in Soviet culture, the workers’ state formally eradicated the dreaded incorporated bodies of capitalism and gave them no quarter in subsequent ideological battles. But just like sex, the behaviors and practices of corporations kept cropping up in the oddest places to help sustain the Soviet economy, while the West remained a source of inspiration for new ways to do it. To examine the corporation in the Soviet era, this article explores Aeroflot and the routes it shared with Pan American World Airways between the United States and Soviet Union in the late 1960s and 1970s. I argue that operating in the US market allowed Aeroflot to learn how to become a corporation well before the Gorbachev era and the collapse of the USSR. Aeroflot’s adaptations of corporate practices bolstered rather than threatened the airline and the Soviet political economy. In addition, I show how the airline relied not just on Pan Am but also on a network of American businesses and individuals, including émigrés from Russia, to acculturate itself to corporate practices. What Aeroflot’s example suggests, I argue, is that Soviet enterprises could become corporations in all but name beyond Soviet borders and that their models for doing so were not prerevolutionary Russian corporations but Western corporations of the postwar era. This article also demonstrates the ways corporations and state socialist enterprises shaped the Cold War, as well as what closer attention to them can reveal about how the superpower conflict ended
