Black, Gay, and Unapologetic: How Lil Nas X Is Bringing The Out Group In
Get PDFLil Nas X is a gay, Black artist who is succeeding across multiple genres. His first number one hit was a mix of country and trap, including elements of black culture. The second was a mix of hip hop and pop, showcasing elements of queer culture. Lil Nas X is a special case study because he is a Black queer man succeeding in the mainstream. Using ideological criticism I identify that Black pride and gay pride are driving him in his work and public persona. His success pushes against dominant ideologies and forces people who consume mainstream content to acknowledge experiences they may not have been confronted with before. While Lil Nas X is not the first artist to address Black or queer themes in their work he is the first to do so with such a large platform. His work will have lasting impacts on the communities he represents.

Nation-Building in Newspapers: A Comparison of Lithuanian and Ukrainian Ethnic Newspapers in America, 1940-1953
Get PDFThe scholarly debate surrounding the American diaspora’s involvement in setting the foundation for myths about nationalist fighters used in Eastern European memory wars today places responsibility for these myths with the Displaced Person (DP) wave of immigrants. However, ethnic newspapers during World War II reveal that nationalist sentiments and favorable feelings toward nationalist movements existed before the DPs arrived. As expressed in such newspapers, these sentiments pushed those of Lithuanian and Ukrainian descent in America to advocate for Eastern European nations’ independence from the Soviet Union. Consequently, a nationalist foundation was already set for the DP population to build upon when they arrived, enabling them to withhold information on the violence of the nationalist movements to portray the nationalists as patriotic victims. This paper argues that the pre-DP American diaspora helped build the modern myth of the tragic nationalist hero by de-emphasizing the violence of nationalist movements in ethnic newspapers
The Reckoning That Never Happened
No full textFive years after the UMW men’s rugby team was suspended for a violent and misogynistic chant, I am writing about whether the school has fully reckoned with the rugby team’s culture of sexual hostility. The school has mandated sexual harassment training for all athletes, hired a Title IX expert, and settled a lawsuit with Feminists United Club, which sued the school in 2015 for failing to protect members from more than 700 harassing messages over the anonymous app Yik Yak. The club was met with violent rape and death threats following their criticism of the rugby team’s chant. But, as a student, I am still warned to avoid rugby parties – I think that the toxic culture that existed five years ago has not entirely disappeared, and the school seems more focused on polishing its reputation instead of holding an open dialogue about what happened

This project is an extensive virtual documentation of the directing process, the rehearsal process, and the shift from producing theatre live to producing it virtually. Covid-19 Practices in Special Education: Stakeholder Perceptions and Implications for Teacher Preparation
No full textIn light of COVID-19, school divisions across the country closed their doors and shifted to remote instruction. In Virginia, little guidance was provided to assist educators and teacher educators with making this transition, particularly for students with individualized education programs (IEPs). In May of 2020, researchers surveyed Virginia stakeholders involved in special education to assess the effectiveness of instructional delivery and procedural compliance as it related to students\u27 IEPs. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis reveal that while schools and school divisions were generally viewed as effective with the procedural components of a free and appropriate public education, they were less effective, or ineffective, with the provision of specialized instruction. Implications for teacher preparation programs are discussed

Temporal Dynamics of Caspase Activation in PPI-treated Cancer Cells
Get PDFCancer cells rely on glycolysis even under normoxic conditions. The use of this pathway results in measurable intracellular acidification, which is characterized as an early event in the apoptosis program. The pH is restored by activation of voltage- gated proton pumps, preventing acidification. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole, inhibit the H+/K+-ATPase system found at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. Research has shown that omeprazole is also capable of inducing caspase-dependent apoptosis in Jurkat T-lymphocytes. However, the effects of PPIs on caspase activity remain largely unknown. The goal of this study was to determine the temporal dynamics of caspase activity in Jurkat cells treated with omeprazole, dexlansoprazole, or esomeprazole for six hours. After the incubation period, cells were held in place by anti- CD71 antibodies on the device’s affinity surface and fluorescence microcopy was used to monitor caspase activity in real time. Caspase activation was observed over a six-hour period with the fluorogenic caspase probe, L-bisaspartic acid rhodamine 110 (D2R). Elucidation of the intensity and timing of caspase activation will be beneficial for evaluating PPIs as potential cancer therapeutics
