    “The Battle Against Sameness”: Queer Marriages in Forster and Woolf

    The Bloomsbury Group was known for unconventionality, both in their lives and in their writing. This holds especially true for E.M. Forster and Virginia Woolf, whose novels uniquely depict queer relationships as an alternative to traditional, rigid, heterosexual marriages. This paper looks at Clarissa and Richard from Mrs. Dalloway, Margaret and Henry from Howards End, and Maurice and Alec from Maurice and how each of these couples subvert the societal conventions of the Victorian era in different ways. A close reading of these texts and characters allows for a nuanced understanding of Woolf and Forster’s revolutionary visions and demonstrates how these works are still relevant in today’s society

    The Dissection of Twins Amber Zipfel Professor Colin Rafferty ENGL 470C_01: Creative Writing Seminar: Non-Fiction This body of work is composed of ten short pieces that dissect several aspects of twins in approximately 7,000 words. The structure of the work, which involves every piece mirroring another one with the same or similar title, is meant to resemble the relationship of twins: two labeled with the same title but possess different content within their bodies. Overall, there are personal stories and informative breakdowns of twin stereotypes utilized to convey this popular subject. Each piece helps strengthen the primary goals of this work, which are to enlighten people on how twins influence other lives, their unique connection, and the commonly shared emotions toward society’s perceptions. This composition also supplies some permeance towards my own experience as a twin, from the personal interviews of my family members to the detailed description of the birthday routine. Furthermore, this work allows profound access into the lives of twins, which many people do not encounter

    The healthcare experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals is often fraught with discrimination. While awareness and education surrounding LGBTQ+ identities and social issues have improved within healthcare, discrimination is still an everyday occurrence for many LGBTQ+ individuals, with the lack of LGBTQ+ health education for providers a considerable contributing factor. Medical curriculum has slowly begun to incorporate educational material related to the LGBTQ+ community; however, there are a multitude of barriers preventing sufficient coverage of LGBTQ+ health issues, reducing the ability of healthcare providers to deliver culturally competent care. Given the difficulty of implementing curricular change, other solutions are needed to address the disparity. One possibility that deserves greater attention is peer education, an option found to be successful in a variety of subjects as well as addressing LGBTQ+ concerns in other contexts. Given the need for peer education programs to help to close the gap in LGBTQ+ health curriculum coverage, it is important to have such training programs readily available for students. These trainings can help to better prepare students for the diverse populations they will be caring for in clinical settings while also raising their own self-awareness of issues related to diversity. The culmination of this project was an annotated portfolio of educational materials that can be implemented in a peer education program for preclinical medical students. The series of workshops covers power and privilege, intersectionality, and applications of how physicians can provide culturally competent care for LGBTQ+ patients. In this presentation, I will provide a brief overview of my fall research as context for LGBTQ+ health and then will share an overview of my educational portfolio development

    Essential Oils as Bacterial Disinfectants

    Essential oils have become quite popular in natural medicine and their uses as an antibacterial household cleaner have been touted. We investigated how essential oils compared to bleach when used as disinfectants. Previously, we examined eight essential oils and two recipes (mixtures of oils) from Art Naturals for bacterial inhibition and found that six oils and both recipes consistently inhibited bacterial growth. In this study, we tested bacterial inhibition of individual oils, combinations/recipes of oils, exposure time to oils, concentrations of an oil, and build-up/toxicity of oil residues from doTERRA. Escherichia coli was plated onto McConkey agar as a lawn where treatment solutions were spotted onto each plate. Bleach and water served as positive and negative controls respectively. Thyme essential oil had the highest bacterial inhibition. Lemon essential oil did not inhibit bacterial growth. Inhibition zones were between 0-3cm out from the treatment location. To examine growth inhibition versus death, E. coli (MM294) was genetically transformed with pVIB containing lux genes to glow-in-the-dark during growth phase. Every essential oil that inhibited bacteria growth also showed a lack of glowing at the treatment location. Additionally, bleach and thyme oil were diluted (2%-0.2%) to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). After 48 hours bleach’s MIC was 1% and thyme’s was 0.3%. These finding indicate that not only do essential oils kill E. coli, but some are as or more effective than bleach. Testing other species of bacteria, and essential oils’ potency on human skin cells are areas for future study

    Ruined by Lynn Nottage: An Exploration of Women and Violence

    This project is a dramaturgical exploration of the play Ruined by Lynn Nottage. Ruined is based on the true stories of women from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who experienced trauma such as rape, torture, and family disownment. Nottage’s play gives a voice to women and their experiences in a war zone. Dramaturgy is defined as the study of dramatic composition and theatrical representation. The purpose is to create a guide for the artistic team for the production to be as accurate as possible. This guide includes information on the author including her process and research while writing this show, information on the production history, a synopsis of the plot and characters, a timeline and discussion on the history of conflict in the DRC, the implications that occurred because of the conflict, and a glossary of unknown words from the play. This project explored the weaponization of sexual violence against women and how the portrayal of these women’s reality can affect change within a society. It explores the interaction between theatre and politics, between a fictionalized depiction and reality. This project educates an audience on sexual violence in warfare and how detrimental it is to the people it is committed against

    Ground water iron concentration

    Groundwater samples from Louisa County contain high unknown quantities of iron, resulting in red rust-stained sediments in areas with constant water. This leads to concern over the amount of Fe that contaminates the water, as the WHO suggests levels below 0.3 mg/L, while levels in groundwater can be as high as 5 mg/L. The unknown concentrations of iron can be evaluated through the use of UV-Vis spectroscopy. A set of Fe standards was created using a known concentration (2.5-100 μM) which combined with phenathroline to create an orange ferroin complex, in addtion to hydroxylamine and acetate buffer. The ferroin complex was measured and a calibration curve was constructed in order to determine the unknown concentrations of Fe in both a filtered water sample and a groundwater sample. These samples were also run on an ICP-AES because of its lower detection capabilities. Results for both studies will be presented

    Elemental Characterization between Single Origin Arabica and Peaberry Robusta from Vietnam

    Coffea arabica and coffea canephora (robusta) are the two most common species of coffee. With the rising price and rising global demand for coffee there is an increasing incentive for distributors to pass cheap coffee as more expensive coffee creating a need to verify the authenticity of coffee. This research was conducted to perform elemental characterization of Nguyen brand arabica and robusta coffee grown in Vietnam. The coffee beans were ground and digested by nitric acid digestion. The samples were run using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and compared with prepared standards containing calcium, iron, rubidium and manganese. Standard calibration for each element was created from which the element concentration in the coffee samples were determined. The elemental ratio between manganese and calcium in arabica, was approximately double the ratio between manganese and calcium in robusta. The elemental ratio between iron and manganese in arabica was approximately half the ratio in robusta. The elemental ratio between rubidium and manganese in arabica was also approximately half the ratio in robusta. The elemental ratios were compared to confirm that the two species of coffee grown in Vietnam were different. The results showed that the robusta absorbs more iron than arabica when standardized with manganese

    Groundwater Pollution Regulation in the U.S.

    The primary purpose of our field research was comparing chemical analysis of groundwater samples from the present day with the laboratory analysis taken after underground storage tanks (USTs) leaked pollutants (TPHs, VOCs, PERCs) into the groundwater located under the University of Mary Washington campus, a discovery made in 1993. We read through three WOTUS Supreme Court cases (SWANCC vs. the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rapanos vs. the United States, Maui vs. the Hawaii Wildlife Fund) to appraise how the Clean Water Act has been interpreted judicially in the past, as well as to speculate how the pollution from 1993 might have been handled legally
