The Prevalence of Anti-Feminist Content on TikTok and YouTube Shorts
In today\u27s digital landscape, online platforms serve as hubs of political discourse, akin to modern-day town halls. Among these platforms, TikTok has surged in popularity, emerging as a significant arena for ideological exchange. However, it has also become a breeding ground for anti-feminist rhetoric, a trend not exclusive to TikTok but also observable across competitors like YouTube Shorts. A content analysis conducted on the initial 100 videos suggested by both TikTok and YouTube Shorts for a new account revealed several noteworthy insights. Within this sample, it was found that 5% of TikTok videos contained anti-feminist themes, while only 3% of YouTube Shorts exhibited similar content. The first anti-feminist TikTok video surfaced 19% into the analysis, contrasting with YouTube Shorts, where such content did not emerge until the 79th video. These findings underscore TikTok\u27s comparatively more hospitable environment for anti-feminist sentiments when juxtaposed with YouTube, shedding light on the dynamics of digital discourse and ideological trends within these platforms
How Ghosting is Perceived as a Relationship Dissolution Strategy in the Digital Age: A Content Analysis of Everyday Definitions of Ghosting
Ghosting is used as a relationship dissolution strategy to effectively end communication with someone, particularly with the increase of digital technology. There are various reasons why someone may decide to ghost, but many everyday definitions about ghosting often paint it as a negative social practice while simultaneously comforting the ghostee. These everyday definitions are not accurate, and past literature suggests there can be benefits to ghosting. In a content analysis of ghosting definitions, three key searches, “ghosting,” “ghosting relationship,” and “ghosting reason” were examined under three themes and two subthemes to see if they had negative or positive connotations towards the practice. Findings suggest that everyday Internet searches of ghosting will portray it as negative even if ghosting can be situational. Recommendations for future research include looking into reasons why people ghost and offering more encompassing definitions of ghosting
A Trump-Shaped Shadow: Demonstrating Competing Republican Identities to Gain Party Support
How do Republican candidates demonstrate their conservative identity to appeal to Republican primary voters? Recent scholarship finds that ascendant groups within the Republican Party have changed the party’s platform, moved to the extreme right, and redefined the American conservative identity. This paper hypothesizes that former President Donald Trump is advantaged in the 2024 Republican primary as the party’s standard bearer. Additionally, I hypothesize that former Governor Nikki Haley and Governor Ron DeSantis try to gain support from Republican voters by redefining what it means to be a Republican, and they use their appeal to Republican voters as alternatives to Trump and each other. By examining Haley and DeSantis’ campaign messaging these hypotheses are supported, indicating that the contemporary Republican identity continues to be defined by Trump’s brand of politics and reactionary conservative. These findings suggest that the Republican base is reluctant to move away from Trump and will continue towards the ideological right, but the Republican identity has the potential to change in the future
Presidential Influence on the Bureaucracy: The Curious Case of Lina Khan
How effective can a president be in promoting his or her policies through the bureaucracy? Most theories postulate the president has influence – via appointees, budgeting, and executive orders. This paper unpacks the president’s influence on the bureaucracy by analyzing President Biden’s effect on antitrust, particularly with regards to addressing labor concerns. Biden appears to depart from previous presidential administrations due to his heightened emphasis on labor’s need for protection and antitrust law as the optimal vehicle for helping workers. The data, pulled from federal and state court antitrust cases since 2000, relies on textual analysis with regards to the frequency of labor terminology. President Biden’s dedication towards deconcentrating the labor market appears to increase labor considerations in antitrust suits, as the data demonstrate a rise in terms related to labor during the Biden Administration. Labor terminology was increasing throughout the past two decades but experienced a bump in its rate of increase during President Biden’s first term. Hence, the president’s effects on antitrust and the bureaucracy appear persuasive based on the considered evidence. These findings indicate the bureaucracy is swayed by political headwinds, making consistent regulation difficult

The Metaphor of Ekphrasis:
or Why does your Ekphrasis look different from mine?
Ekphrasis is the ultimate extrapolation of symbols and metaphors. It is a set of words purported to describe a physical object that carries its own symbolism and, sometimes, portrays allusions to other narratives. Like the idea of a sign, words represent ekphrasis but, like a metaphor, ekphrasis represents something other than itself. This paper illustrates how a narrative description of an object can be filled with emotion and imagery, while being interpreted in distinctly diverse ways by individuals reading the same text. The arbitrary nature of language and its interpretive effect on narrative were reviewed, before delving into the question of how humans cognitively create an image of an object. The paper explores the impact of history, cultural context, and the perspectives of the participants viewing ekphrasis, using the fresco at Carthage from the Aeneid, before concluding by illustrating the difference in ekphrastic interpretation by presenting different renditions of the shield of Achilles - the most famous ekphrastic image of all time
Trump\u27s 2016 Election Win: Why He Owes it to Jesus
The election of Donald J. Trump in 2016 was a shock that rippled across America. It came out of the blue and was pushed forward by the most religious sect of the US population. This left many questioning the power that Trump held to sway these voters and convince them of his religious fervor. What many people did not pay attention to was the unique religious background that Trump had. He was raised in the church of Norman Vincent Peale, famed prosperity gospel minister and creator of the “Power of Positive Thinking.” Peale’s teachings revolved around the effect of confidence and positive thinking-based faith and how it led to financial and personal success. The impact of Peale’s teachings are found within Trump’s rhetoric and behavior, linking the two men together. Peale’s impact allowed for Trump to find his way into the White House through strong evangelical support
Student-Teacher Alliance Buffers Against the Impact of Moderate Math Anxiety on Course Performance among College Students
Students with math anxiety experience low self-efficacy and high levels of distress when asked to approach math tasks and concepts, which often results in poor course performance. Despite the wealth of research on this construct, relatively little is known about how math anxiety impacts math achievement in college-aged students or what types of classroom-based processes might buffer against this harmful effect. The present study therefore examined the student-teacher alliance as a potential buffer against the detrimental effect of math anxiety on course grades in a sample of non-STEM college students enrolled in a required mathematics course. Students completed questionnaires regarding their math anxiety, overall anxiety, perception of their alliance with their course instructor, and class grade over the course of a semester. Results indicated that, although elevated math anxiety was associated with poorer course performance, this link was weakened for students who perceived themselves to have a stronger relationship with their instructor. However, this moderation effect was present for students with low to moderate, but not high, math anxiety. Findings highlight the importance of college-level math instructors attending to the student-teacher alliance as a potential anxiety mitigation strategy, particularly for students with moderate levels of math anxiety

Ch. 21: “Both by Sea and Land”: Venetian Trade and Retail in the View
This chapter appears in the book, A View of Venice: Portrait of a Renaissance City. Edited by Kristin Love Huffman.
Chapter abstract: Sold at the relatively princely sum of three florins, Jacopo de’ Barbari’s View of Venice proved popular among members of the Serenissima, as attested by the eight versions that still reside in the city. In addition to its cost, the large size would have necessitated space for storage and viewing. It is tempting to imagine the View taking up residence in Venice, perhaps even somewhere in the porteghi, ample quasi-public spheres of the city’s grand palazzi. Much of Venice’s success relied on her prosperous merchant class, some of whom were involved in its pigment trade. With both the means to afford the View and a vested interest in the civic pride it embodies, merchants represent an interesting audience from which to consider the View’s creation.https://scholar.umw.edu/cpr_books/1009/thumbnail.jp
