Home Environment as a Predictor of Students’ Academic Performance: A Case of Agona Seventh-day Adventist Junior High School in Ghana
The study sought to examine the effect of the home environment on learners' academic performance at the Seventh-Day Adventist Junior High School, Agona, Ghana. The study used the descriptive survey design with a sample of 98 students and 22 teachers. Data was collected through a questionnaire and it was analyzed through descriptive statistics and Chi-Square. The study established that parents who had higher levels of education provided support for their wards to attain higher levels of education than parents with lowers levels of education. Children of parents with higher levels of education were provided with resources like learning materials to aid their education. The study recommends that parents should be encouraged to come up with strategies that will help them improve their income as this approach may enable them to provide basic school needs of their wards. School leaders should organize seminars to educate parents on the need to make the education of their wards a priority and to pay much attention to it. They should also educate parents on the benefits they can derive from their wards education
First Anatomy Annual Congress in Rwanda - October 13 – 15, 2022
Theme: Promoting anatomy to enlighten safe and effective clinical practice
It is with a greater honor that I welcome you to this Anatomy Annual Congress, the first of its kind in Rwanda. Anatomy is an essential fundamental science in medical education and medical practice and it deserve to be vibrant scientifically. The S-CAR have been founded with the aim of growing the anatomy sciences and this congress is a wonderful outcome of this common commitment. The congress has 4 events that include: a pre-conference workshop on the peripheral nervous system, the S-CAR annual congress, the scientific conference and the world anatomy day (WAD).
Reinforcing the importance of the PNS, Dr. David HAKIZIMANA, a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon wrote this, I quote: “Peripheral nerve surgery is used to improve function and minimize pain and disability in people with peripheral nerve disorders, such as acute nerve injuries, entrapment neuropathies, and nerve sheath tumors. It involves rerouting healthy nerves to take over the function of the nerves affected by injury, disease, or condition. Surgical treatment for peripheral nerve injuries involves a team which may include: neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons. Globally the status of peripheral nerve surgery practice within the global landscape of surgery has long been in the shadow of the more prominent areas. The reasons are many, one of them plausibly being the conceptual frame of the very word “peripheral”, which evoke the notions of marginality and lesser importance especially for neurosurgeons. Some of the related common misconceptions are that neurological deficit in peripheral nerve injury is permanent and irreversible, that peripheral nerves do not have the ability to regenerate, that the results of surgical treatment are insignificant. In Rwanda and Africa in general peripheral nerve surgery in almost non-existing or at embryonic phase at best. Although peripheral nerve surgery is not a life-saving surgery, it has been proved to be a life-changing surgery, with a major impact on the quality of patient’s life, as it improves the patient’s ability to perform every day and professional activities and thus affects his/her physical and psychological well-being. Moreover, since most patients with peripheral nerve injuries and brachial plexus injuries belong to the working-age population, peripheral nerve surgery also has substantial socioeconomic implications. Contrary to the previously held view, the peripheral nerve system has been shown to have a huge regeneration potential, with significant results enhanced by different modalities of stimulation, whereby recent research on brain plasticity indicates that experience-dependent reorganization of neural networks plays an important role in functional recovery. For all these reasons, systematic research, education, and practice in peripheral nerve surgery is definitely worth the effort. The aim of this course will be to train residents and interested surgeons from Rwanda in peripheral nerve surgery skills”. The rich scientific conference program with 37 presentations subdivided in sessions on medical education, congenital defects, anatomy and anatomical variations, neurosciences, free presentations, closure lecture, scientific forum for PhD and MSC candidates, cadavers for education and research will give to you an excellent experience. On behalf of S-CAR, I am grateful to the sponsors (MoH, UR, UGHE, AUCA-ASOME, Operation Smile, CHUK and MMI)
Aberrant brachial artery: case report of an anatomical variation
INTRODUCTION: The brachial artery and its terminal branches are the major arterial supply to the brachium and antebrachium. Variations in the vascular supply in the upper limbs have been previously documented to occur more in the radial artery, followed by the ulnar artery, but less commonly in the brachial arteryCASE: An embalmed cadaver was used for gross dissection during the gross anatomy dissection for postgraduate students at the department of human anatomy of the University of Rwanda.During the dissection of the right upper arm, an accessory brachial artery was found, branching from the axillary artery above the unification of the lateral and medial cords of the brachial plexus (the lateral and medial root of the median nerve).CONCLUSION: In our case, the aberrant brachial artery originated from the axillary artery and gave off a muscular branch in the middle third of the arm, which is of clinical importance
Medication Adherence and Perceived Family Support Among Elderly Patients with Hypertension Attending a Specialty Clinic in Lagos, Nigeria
Background: Hypertension and medication adherence are global public health challenges, with elderly patients suffering the most because they frequently have multiple co-morbidities.
Objective: To evaluate the level of medication adherence and perceived family support among Nigerian elderly patients with hypertension.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study among 293 consecutively consenting elderly hypertensive patients using an interviewer-administered, semi-structured questionnaire. The Modified Morisky Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) and Perceived Social Support-Family Scale (PSS-Fa) tools were used to assess medication adherence and perceived family support, respectively.
Results: The mean age of respondents was 69.5±6.4 years. Medication adherence was good, moderate and poor among 14.3%, 68.6%, and 17.1% of the respondents respectively. Difficulty remembering to take medications was the primary reason for non-adherence in 73.7% of cases. Good adherence to medication was significantly associated with male gender (p = 0.046), living with grandchildren (p˂0.001), having other sources of income (p = 0.026) and receiving treatment for comorbid illnesses (p = 0.025). A higher proportion of the respondents (94.9%) had strong perceived family support, which lacked statistical significance regarding good medication adherence. (p = 0.739).
Conclusion: This study found medication adherence low, despite most participants' strong family support. Forgetfulness and financial constraints were the primary reasons for poor medication adherence. Although family support is highly recommended and beneficial for medication adherence, other comorbid and social factors should be considered
Labour emigration, remittances and economic development: an empirical analysis
There have been a lot of controversies on the effects of labour emigration and remittances on economic growth and development in the sending countries. Some concluded a significant positive impact, while others failed to identify a direct link between labour and remittance inflow and economic development. This study therefore, empirically estimated the effects of international labour emigration and remittances on economic development in Nigeria, using annual time series data for the period 1977-2021. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was employed to analyze the model. Findings suggested a significant positive effect on economic development in Nigeria. Therefore, we concluded that labour migration is an alternative source of income in Nigeria that positively enhanced economic development, hence, should not be discouraged (ceteris paribus)
Effects of strain and age of layer chickens on mineral contents of egg yolk and albumen
This study evaluated the effects of strain (genotype) and age on the mineral composition of egg yolk and albumen of the domestic chicken. A total of 810 eggs were used in a 3 X 3 factorial ar-rangement of treatments involving the Lohmann White, Lohmann Brown and White Leghorn which were 31, 40 and 53 weeks old. Data obtained were subjected to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the General Linear Model procedure in Minitab (version 18). Phosphorous was highest in yolks from the White Leghorn (4433.4 μg/g) than in yolks from the Lohmann Brown (4402.4 μg/g) and Lohmann White (4397.5 μg/g) strains. Iron content of egg yolk was significantly (p < 0.05) different among all the layers with the highest in the Lohmann Brown (77.0 μg/g) fol-lowed by the Lohmann White (37.2 μg/g) and lowest in the White Leghorn (21.7 μg/g). There was significant (p < 0.05) effect of layers’ age on all the mineral elements of the chicken yolk except calcium, while all but phosphorous could be substantially affected by hen-age in the albumen. Copper and zinc concentrations of the yolk significantly increased from week 31 (0.7 and 21.2 μg/g) to week 40 (1.2 and 28.9.2 μg/g) to week 53 (1.9 and 39.5 μg/g) correspondingly. Chicken strain and age interactions were detected for all minerals in the egg parts with the exception of calcium in the yolk. The results denote that yolk from White Leghorn at week 40 had about 5% more potas-sium than at weeks 31 and 53, comparable to the observation made for the same element where the yolk from the Lohmann White at week 40 had about 11% more potassium than at weeks 31 and 53. In summary, there are variations in the mineral contents of egg yolk and albumen of layer chick-ens by virtue of their genetic constitution and ages. Consequently, farmers must produce from the best strains (genotypes) at the appropriate hen-ages to make mineral contents of eggs meet the needs of specific consumers and products. The outcomes will therefore be beneficial for dieticians to recommend quality eggs for persons with specific mineral challenges and also assist the manu-facturing industry to choose eggs for particular products
An empirical analysis of the factors influencing the private cost of teacher education in south-western Nigeria
This study investigated the determinants of private cost of university education in the south-western, Nigeria. This study adopted descriptive survey research design of ex-post facto type. This is because the variables being investigated cannot be controlled by the investigator as the event had occurred. Besides, the researcher essentially described a phenomenon that was already in existence. Stratified random technique was used to sample 2, 212 through research instrument titled” “Private Cost of Teacher Education Inventory (PCTEI). Data collected were analyzed using z-test Statistic and Regression Analysis. The study revealed significant variation in the private cost of university education due to ownership, gender, residential type and the type institution. Further, programme of study did not reveal strong effect on private cost of university education. Consequently, there is every need for teacher education programmes to be subsidized to ameliorate the private cost burden either by increasing the subvention or award of bursaries and scholarships to students
Internet and communication technology, a space for internet fraud: Cyber security via computer usage in educational system
Today’s society is a technological driven and Information Communication and Technology ICT dependent enhanced by educational learning. Although, the internet offers wide range of opportunities for the users to communicate with ease, socialize, achieve, improved job performance and maintain close relationship with others across the globe but there are also risks on other hand. Internet fraud, one of the evils of our time, is becoming a big threat to the society and individuals whose daily activities depend on the use of the computer technology. This paper highlights some of these ICT tools used via computer, examined the fears regarding cyber security threat, highlighted types and nature of threats, stated some causes of internet fraud and the effects of internet fraud. The exponential increase of this crime in the society has become a strong issue and the cyberspace becoming unsafe which cyber fraudsters use the ICT to monitor gas and chemical plants on a safe ground to them for the sales of petroleum products on illegal marketing of the products known as bunkery. This paper provides information that will help the computer and cyber users to be security conscience and as well as to understand different methods internet fraudsters adopt their strategies. Recommendations proffered includes keeping sensitive information about transactions safe, to always ignore e-mail requiring sensitive information, the use of strong password and administrators to be cyber security conscious amongst others
Opinion of joint admission matriculation board jamb candidates about quota system and admission into universities in Nigeria
Over the years jamb candidates have expressed dissatisfaction over the method of admission into universities in Nigeria which seems to favour people from a particular region against others from another region through quota system regime. This paper tried to find out the opinion of Joint admission matriculation board JAMB candidates from the southern and eastern parts of Nigeria as regards quota admission into Universities. Using the survey design, a population of all candidates from where a sample size of 4000 was derived. A 10-item structured questionnaire titled “Jamb Candidates and Quota System Questionnaire” (JOSQ) designed on a 4-likert scale was used to elicit information from the JAMB candidates . Two research questions and two hypotheses were proposed. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the two research questions while t-test was used to answer the two hypotheses formulated for the study .Findings include that Quota system is discriminatory, quota system is intended to marginalize and quota system breeds underdevelopment and that there is no significant difference in the mean rating of JAMB candidates and admission into the universities on quota system in universities. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations proferred
The trends and prospects of statistical packages for the social science (SPSS) as a tool for data analysis in architectural research
Research, by all its ramifications, aims not only to provide answers to the ‘what’ or ‘how’, but also to the ‘why’ questions. To be able to answer the posed research questions properly, the researcher need to collect relevant data, code the data, process /analyse the data and finally draw conclusions. Clearly there are tools for collecting data and researchers hardly have problem using them. The apparent difficulty encountered during research process is data analysis. This is due to the fact that it involves mathematical calculations. In most cases, people would rather pay others to do it for them. The advent of computers has made so many things easy. Computer software package have now come to replace lots of other hitherto cumbersome processes. Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS) have been developed to do the statistical analysis of research data. This paper therefore examined the application of SPSS as a tool for statistical data analysis. The paper reviewed literature on SPSS, its development and suitability for architectural research data analysis. The paper concludes that adopting SPSS would make quantitative research in architecture much dependable and replicable.
