Effects of biomacromolecules on growth, digestibility, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidation, and immunity in broilers

    No full text
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two biomacromolecules, fermented wheat bran polysaccharides (FWBPs) and sodium humate (SH), on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant status, and immunity of broilers. A total of 144 male, one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into three dietary groups: control (CON), 0.4% FWBPs, and 0.1% SH, with six replicates of eight birds. The FWBPs and SH groups had a greater body weight (BW) at 21 and 42 d, average daily weight gain (ADG) in the starter period, average daily feed intake (ADFI) in the overall period, and feed-to-gain ratio (F:G) in the grower period. However, the ADFI was decreased by FWBPs supplementation and increased by SH supplementation in the grower period. The dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) digestibility were higher in the SH group at 21 d. At 21 d, the FWBPs group had an increased duodenal trypsin and serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentration, and a decreased liver malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. The SH group had increased duodenal lipase activity, serum IgM, and interleukin-2 concentrations but decreased liver MDA concentrations. At 42 d, FWBPs and SH supplementation decreased duodenal trypsin and chymotrypsin and serum superoxide dismutase activity. Jejunum chymotrypsin activity and liver MDA content were decreased in the SH group. In conclusion, dietary FWBPs or SH supplementation during the starter period can improve growth performance and nutrient digestibility and enhance antioxidant capacity and immunity of broilers

    No full text
Colony development in honey bees depends on both the environmental conditions and their genetic structure. Nutrition is the one of the most important factors in the honey bee’s health. This study was carried out in 48 colonies and included six groups (a control and five feeding groups). In the experiment, the effect of different feeding strategies on intestinal flora and the presence of Nosema was investigated. Pantoea agglomerans, Pseudomonas luteola, Burkholderia cepacia, Brevibacillus nitrificans, Sphingomonas paucimobilis, Aeromonas hydrophila, and P. alcalidimonas were detected in the intestinal microflora of the bee samples by morphological and phenotypic identification. The results of phenotypic identification were confirmed using 16S rRNA sequence analysis for P. agglomerans and B. nitrificans strains. The presence of Nosema was simultaneously investigated in all groups. Only Nosema cerenae was detected using DNA analysis in the positive Nosema spore samples

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary Piriformospora indica (PI) and clove essence (CE) and a combination of them (synbiotic) on  performance and biochemical parameters after induction of stress using dexamethasone. The experiment was performed with 320 male, one-day-old  chicks (Ross 308) using eight experimental groups and five replications. In each replication, eight chickens were fed a maize–soy-based diet. Experimental  groups included group 1 (T1): control diet (based on maize and soybean without any feed additives); group 2 (T2): control diet with 0.2 cc  dexamethasone injection; group 3 (T3): control diet with 11.6 cc CE; group 4 (T4): control diet with 10 mg PI; group 5 (T5): control diet with 11.6 cc of CE  with 0.2 cc injection of dexamethasone; group 6 (T6): control diet with 10 mg PI and 0.2 cc of dexamethasone; group 7 (T7): control diet with synbiotic  containing 10 mg of PI with 11.6 cc of CE; group 8 (T8): control diet with synbiotic containing 10 mg of PI and 11.6 cc of CE with 0.2 mg dexamethasone  injection. PI and CE were poured into the drinking water during the rearing period. After 31, 33, 38, and 40 days, 2 mg/kg BW of dexamethasone was  injected in the right breast muscle of experimental groups 2, 5, 6, and 8; after 35 and 42 days, samples were taken. The addition of CE, PI, and the  synbiotic, caused an increase in body weight gain, feed intake, and reduced FCR compared to the control group in experimental groups 3, 4, and 7. The  addition of 11.6 cc CE and 10 mg of PI caused an increase in body weight gain and feed intake and reduced FCR compared to the control group.  Dexamethasone (0.2 mg) led to damage of the lymph organs, body weight loss, a reduction in humoral immunity, and side effects on performance  parameters. Clove extract and the prebiotic reduced the adverse effects of dexamethasone. &nbsp

Introduction: Genitourinary infections are common in Diabetes patients compared to the general population more so in patients with Sodium glucose co transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) treatment , So, we did a study to find the prevalence of genitourinary infection in T2DM patients treated with SGLT2i. Methods: One hundred and twenty patients receiving SGLT2i, who had signs and symptoms indicative of genitourinary infections were enrolled into the study. Results: The mean age of presentation was 54.4 ± 7.7 years and percentage of males were 62 (51.66%). In this cohort, 72(60%) were treated with empagliflozin, 34(28.33%) with dapagliflozin and 14(11.66%) with canagliflozin. Twenty patients had genital mycotic infection and 4 had urinary tract infection. Female patients had higher incidence of infections than male patients with no statistically significant difference (P = ns). We did not find any significant correlation between age of the patient, gender, duration of disease and treatment, HbA1c, different types and dose of SGLT2i used with the incidence of genital mycotic infections(P = ns). Conclusion: We need to counsel the patients before starting SGLT2i regarding possible chance of getting genitourinary infection, proper genital hygiene, drinking plenty of water and consulting the doctor if any symptoms at the earliest. A comprehensive review of the components of nurse-coordinated care which are most effective in preventing coronary heart diseases

    No full text
Coronary artery disease occurs when there is inadequate blood flow to the heart muscle as a consequence of coronary artery blockage, resulting in heart muscle failure. During normal heart action, cardiac muscles will always need an adequate supply of blood to fulfill their oxygen requirements. Coronary heart disease is the most common kind of cardiovascular disease in adults and the leading cause of mortality in the United States. Growing understanding of the possible significance of environmental and lifestyle variables in disease development has enhanced the job of the nurse coordinator, whether at a lower or higher levelof responsibility, to keep current ondiagnostic procedures, clinical symptoms, and innovative treatment choices. According to the national cardiovascular control program, secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease has increased, including measures such as cholesterol management, blood pressure monitoring, and smoking cessation. If you know more about NCC, it might be easier to figure out what roles it could play and what effects its use might have. Obstetric ultrasound training programmes for midwives: A scoping review

    No full text
Background: Antenatal care is essential for all expectant mothers and assists in reducing maternal mortality rates thus addressing the Sustainable  Development Goal 3. Obstetric ultrasound complements antenatal care and is used in pregnancy to identify and monitor high-risk pregnancies. However,  disparities exist and in low- and middle-income countries, ultrasound services are not readily available. This contributes to maternal and neonatal  morbidity and mortality within these populations. Short ultrasound training programmes for midwives can be beneficial in alleviating some of the  challenges experienced. Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to identify global ultrasound education programmes for midwives. Method: Articles containing suitable  keywords were retrieved from databases suitable to nursing, education and ultrasound. Themes were developed based on the articles included in the  review. Results: A total of 238 articles were identified, and after the duplicates and irrelevant studies were removed, 22 articles were included. Articles  were analysed and discussed under the identified themes and categories. Conclusion: It is essential that sufficient training is provided to medical  professionals performing obstetric ultrasound so that adequate and safe care is offered to expectant mothers. With the introduction of ultrasound in low-  resource settings, the knowledge of safety and competencies required to operate the equipment necessitate adequate training. Developed  programmes have been found to meet the demands of the ever-changing workforce and allow for midwives to perform focused obstetric ultrasound  examinations. Contribution: This scoping review highlighted ultrasound training programmes for midwives and provided guidance on the development  of future midwifery ultrasound training programmes.&nbsp

Disease severity and renal function among sickle cell anaemia patients in a tertiary hospital, South-south, Nigeria: a cross sectional study

    No full text
BackgroundRenal disease is a recognized complication of sickle cell anaemia (SCA), especially from the third decade of life and is linked to disease severity. This study assessed the association between disease severity and renal function among SCA patients using routine and newer markers of renal function.MethodsThis cross-sectional study recruited 85 SCA patients. Disease severity was assessed using modified Adegoke criteria which include the frequency of transfusion, painful crises, packed cell volume, and history of complications such as hypertension and chronic leg ulcers. Renal function was assessed using urea, creatinine, and beta-2-microglobulin (β2-M). Association was determined between renal function and disease severity using Pearson’s correlation. P-value < 0.05 was taken as significant. ResultsThe mean age of participants was 27.2 ± 7.6 years with 41(48.2%) males and 44 (51.8%) females. The mean packed cell volume, serum creatinine, serum urea, and β2-M were 24.0± 4.1%,17.6±7.5 mg/dL, 0.7±0.3mg/dL, 3.4±1.2mg/l respectively. A majority (54.1%) of them had a mild disease while 35.3% and 10.6% had moderate and severe diseases, respectively. Forty of the SCA patients had urine specific gravity below 1.010. The mean values of systolic blood pressure (p=0.001) diastolic blood pressure (p=0.001), serum creatinine (p=0.028) and β2M (p=0.019) significantly increased with disease severity. There was a significant positive correlation between SCA disease severity and serum urea (r=0.229; p=0.035), and serum β2-microglobulin (r=0.270; p=0.012).Conclusion Sickle cell anaemia severity is associated with a decline in renal function using both traditional and novel renal markers. Serum β2-M may serve as a useful marker of renal function and disease severity in SC
