Visual Perception of Space and Parametric Design: A Brief Discussion

    No full text
The use of Parametric modeling techniques in the design process of buildings and built forms produce some characteristic formal expression which many times produce a striking visual interest. This paper outlines how this kind of formal expression influences visual perception. However, this aspect is not considered objectively in the design process. With the help of parametric design, one now has the liberty to explore different design alternatives in less time and with more ease. The paper explores the possibilities of leveraging this technology to parameterize the formal expression of a built space, that thereafter shape up human perception and subsequent decision making - achieving more holistic built-space design approach

Hypothetical Superluminal Trek and Spin-2 Boson

Abstract - With subluminal speeds, the trek to a (hypothetical) new ‘habitable planet’ may take a lot of time and impose medical and technical conditions out of actual technology. Superluminal speeds may drastically shorten this time and then make possible such treks. New inertial motors based on the equivalence between the Levitron top toy and the matter structure may be used to achieve such superluminal speeds. The paper presents the theory of such motor and also an extension to a new inertial motor based on acoustic and ultraacousticwaves. Some tips are presented to extend the speed of a vehicle equipped with such motors to superluminal speed values. It may also be remarked that the 3D electromagnetic waves generated by a Levitron top are equivalent to a spin-2 boson and then to thehypothetical graviton. Associated with a new convenient technology, this may make possible star trek to very long distances by keeping eventually a contact with the earth using gravitational waves and/or, may be the teleportation methods if the equivalent technology holds for these situations

Universal Algorithm for Creating A Small Scale Reusable Simulation Data in Real-time Strategy Games

Real-time strategy games are of such high complexity that consideration of trying to brute force all actions and states is not only impractical, but impossible. Approximations, information abstractions, and models are, therefore, the necessity when creating game bots that play this genre of games. To create such bots, the detailed data is needed to base them on. This article introduces a universal algorithm that creates reusable simulation data of one attacking unit on a building and tests the feasibility of doing such a task. This paper concludes that capturing all relevant data in a sub-segment of real-time strategygames is feasible. Gathered data holds valuable information and can be reused in new research without the need of repeating the simulations

The Wisdom of Place: The Essence, Origins, and Modes Lithuanian Philosophical Philotopy of Arvydas Å liogeris

    No full text
The authors of the article present an analysis of Lithuanian philosophical philotopy of Arvydas Å liogeris, the most original and influential Lithuanian thinker, mostly focusing on the essence, origins, and modes of Å liogeris’s conception of “the love of placeâ€. Philotopy, as conceived by Å liogeris, is interpreted not only as an expression of the so-called “Lithuanian thinkingâ€, but also as a novel method of contemporary philosophy and a possible answer to present-day challenges, both existential and environmental. Å liogerian philotopy is presented mostly in the context of the three syndromes described by the philosopher in his most important work Niekis ir Esmas (Nihil and Isness), namely, the syndrome of Nirvana, the syndrome of Caligula, and the syndrome of Ithaca. The authors of the article reinterpret further these three syndromes by way of the phenomenology of place, especially a novel attempt at island phenomenology which, though made independently, has some similarities to Yi-Fu Tuan’s phenomenological analysis of the island in the context of his idea of topophilia and his project of human geography. The authors draw attention not only to the similarities and differences between Å liogeris’s conception of philotopy and Yi-Fu Tuan’s conception of topophilia, but also to some interesting conceptual affinities between the thought of Å liogeris and that of Edward S. Casey. The conclusion is made that the project of Lithuanian philosophical philotopy, as represented by the works of Å liogeris and his disciples, though conceived independently and within the traditional contexts of Classical philosophy, presents us with insights that have universal relevance and typologically have very much in common with the respective ideas of those contemporary philosophers who are working within the context of the philosophy of place as a distinct and vigorously developing discipline

Modeling Human Behavior in Building Performance Simulation: Gaussian Process and Monte Carlo Approach to the Energy Simulation of Residential Buildings

    No full text
Occupant behavior has a large impact on residentialbuilding energy use; nevertheless, behavior models in buildingenergy simulation need scrutiny of investigation and use ofoversimplified schedules results in a great deal of uncertainty inbuilding energy prediction; the modeling of accurate occupantschedules requires a complex dataset with long-term observations, which is concealed during early stages of building projects. Thisstudy seeks to estimate behavior-related building operationschedules based on a minimum number of observations, so thatenergy simulation is effectively involved in the early stages ofbuilding projects. To this end, Gaussian process (GP) regressionis applied to modeling five major occupant activities (spaceoccupancy, activity level, hot water use, appliance use, andlighting control) of a single-family house in the United State.Monte Carlo simulation with sampling from GP-based occupantschedules demonstrates large variability of energy simulationresults according to different human behaviors

Seeking Order in Chaos: A Definition of Culture

Since its identification as a unique field of research, the modern study of culture has become very popular. Its analytical-interpretive power has earned it a place of honor among the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. Despite its central status, however, the term “culture†itself has not yet found an accepted, customary definition. The absence of such a definition compels scholars of culture to search for ways to explore the discipline they are engaged in. This situation literally blocks knowledge of who we are as human beings and how we live, and muddles research goals and methodologies. This article aims to deal with this drawback. Taking as its starting point Freud’s basic definition of culture as the “total achievements and institutions, which moved us away from our animal-like ancestors,†and organizing this “total†under three analytical categories of taste, value, and control — it suggests a coherent definition of culture that encompasses most of the existing ones, while embracing them under the “rule†of “radical simplification,†conceived by Robert Darnton in hard-to-define cases. This may offer a better understanding of culture as an all-encompassing human phenomenon, and a a more effective means for selecting the appropriate methodologies needed for the analysis of relevant questions

Geographic Scope Effects on Buyer Satisfaction and Defection

As organizations move away from their domestic borders and into international environments, selling firms should understand the role geographic scope plays for the buying organization in determining whether buyers want to continue purchasing a product or service.  This study addresses differences in geographic scope of buying firms as they relate to satisfaction and intention to remain in the relationship.  Our findings suggest firms that are international in scope place a stronger emphasis on being satisfied with the selling firm and the salesperson of that firm when considering continuing to stay in the relationship than firms that have only a national geographic scope.  Additionally, our findings indicate that organizations that are international in scope place a greater importance on satisfaction with their salesperson when deciding whether to stay in the relationship than firms with a regional scope.  As organizations move away from their domesticborders and into international environments, sellingfirms should understand the role geographic scope playsfor the buying organization in determining whether buyerswant to continue purchasing a product or service. Feed Forward Neural Networks for Forecasting Indonesia Exchange Composite Index

    No full text
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Composite is an index of all stocks that are traded on the IDX. It is known as a tool used by investors and financial managers to depict market and to compare the return on specific investments. Recently, IDX Composite rate is very fluctuated resulting in difficulty to predict the trend of series data. A lot of time series-based model had been developed to make future predictions of IDX Composite. Neural Networks, one of the most popular approaches in financial worlds due to its parsimonious data requirements and can produce a more accurate model especially nonlinear, was used in this study. The study aims to investigate the suitable model and forecast future of IDX Composite using Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN). The IDX Composite series from January 2011 to July 2016 was used to construct the model of FFNN. The study found that FFNN architecture with three inputs and four hidden neurons showed the best forecast accuracy measured by RMSE and MAE. The selected model was then used to predict 12 months ahead of IDX Composite along with their confidence interval. The capital gain of IDX Composite forecasting was calculated to compute the profit with an assumption the investment was 1 million (IDR). The results indicated that if the investors sold the shares in next 12 months, there would be significant profit or capital gain obtained on August and September 2016. While selling the share on remaining periods would yield a noticeable loss or capital loss.Â

Dysfunction from Focusing on Overseas Business

For this study, a questionnaire survey was administered to 824 people who had been posted overseas for at least one year (657 of whom had been involved in a business for the overseas market) in order to explore the factors behind the success of an overseas business. The results made clear, on one hand, that if Japanese companies focus on an overseas business, by, for example, defining the objectives and roles of the business, investing in market research, and posting core personnel abroad, they reach desirable outcomes, but, on the other hand, those outcomes are adversely affected when companies define the objectives and roles prior to conducting market research. A focus on overseas business increases personnel’s organizational identification with his or her headquarters and with the overseas business unit. However, dysfunction occurs when personnel feel high organizational identification with the overseas business unit, and that they are not expected to show customer-oriented behavior. According to our additional analyses, this dysfunction of organizational identification emerges when one perceives a weak identity of one’s organization.Â
