Survey of Symbolic Learning Impairments among Primary School Pupils in Mathematics

    No full text
The study was conducted to survey some of the symbolic learning impairments that caused phobia among primary school pupils in Mathematics. As a descriptive study which made use of two research questions that were later transformed into two hypotheses, purposive sampled of five selected primary schools with ten Mathematics teachers and two hundred pupils of primaries two and four of intact class were used in the study. Three instruments that were developed and used in the study included primary two achievement test in Mathematics (r =0.68), primary four achievement test in Mathematics(r=0.65) and Mathematics teachers’ perceived symbolic learning impairment instrument (r=0.72). Data collected and scoring were done descriptively with one way ANOVA used to analyse data at a significant level of 0.05. Findings revealed that there was significant difference in the academic performances of the past and present pupils’ understanding of counting system that is more than thousandth in the achievement test (F-cal > F-table, df=(4,188), P F-table, df=(4,188), P < 0.05*). Discussions of these findings were extensively elaborated along with their implications towards learning of Mathematics among the primary school pupils on one hand, and teachers’ omission or commission of symbolic learning/teaching impairments on the other hand. At the end suggestions and recommendations were proffered to guide against such symbolic impairments among pupils with a view to encourage more pupils to learn and not to develop phobia for Mathematics at an early stage

In this paper, we define the vector space ï(E) in which the associative multiplication is defined . Moreover we will define the embeddings of E , and * E into the algebra ï(E) , where E be a locally convex algebra , and * E the dual space of E , that is( ) * E  E  ï E . The importance of the algebra ï(E) that we can lift operations ( linear ond bilinear ) from the space E , and * E to the algebra ï(E) , moreover we can define the multiplication of elements of * E as elements of the algebra ï(E) . Also we introduce and study the case when E S(R) the space of functions of rapid decay

This paper describes an interprofessional effortto improve community health in the Vietnam context. Sincethe late 1980s, Vietnam has experienced rapid economicdevelopment. However, the economic growth has not extendedto all regions of the country or to all population groups. Thegap is widening between the rural and urban areas, amongvarious groups. At the same time, there is increasingincidences of social ills such as HIV/AIDS, prostitution, familyviolence, child and elder abuse and neglect. These communityissues need intervention so that people's health can beimproved. In response to request for assistance in dealing withthese issues, the school of Nursing and school of Social Workof a Canadian university collaborated to assist a Vietnamesecounterpart in designing programs to educate qualified socialworkers for meeting this great need of the country

Two Sub-Optimal Algorithms for an NP-Hard Dance Choreography Problem Comparison of Genetic and Greedy Process Implementations

    No full text
We apply the concepts behind Genetic and Greedy Algorithms to solve the dance choreography problem. Both these algorithms use novel adaptations to maximize the probability of yielding optimal solutions to this problem. The performances of both these implementations are compared for solution quality and time complexity. Thus, timings, average ratings, and standard deviation of results are measured with respect to amalgamation length and figures selected. Results indicate the feasibility, and limitations, of these two sub-optimal algorithms in this domain

This study investigates the effect of the ownershipstructure on dividend policies for firms listed at the Casablancastock exchange. Two aspects of the ownership structure are used, the first is the ownership concentration and the second is theidentity of the largest shareholders. A panel data analysis isperformed to examine the relationship between the dividendpolicy and the ownership structure in this emerging market forthe period between 2004 and 2010. Results show that two formsof ownership identity influence negatively the dividend policy offirms listed. In fact, when the identity of the largest shareholderis either an industrial company or a family, the level ofdistributed dividends is decreased. Furthermore, findings showthat there is no impact of ownership concentration on dividendpolicies for firms listed at the Casablanca Stock Exchange

THE KEYNESIAN SYSTEM: FISCAL AND MONETARY POLICY GUIDELINES

In this article we shall try to establish the guidelines ofthe Keynesian fiscal and monetary policies. In order to betterunderstand the Keynesian macroeconomic system it is necessaryto go briefly over the Classical economics in the pre-Keynesianperiod and the fiscal and monetary policies based on thoseanalyses. While principally dwelling on the Keynesianmacroeconomic system and the fiscal and monetary policiesbased on this system, we think we have some grounds about thesignificance of the subject. Firstly, the Keynesian analyses keepholding the balance of power in the theoretical field even in thepost-Keynes era, and constitute the foundation of themacroeconomic textbooks. Secondly, despite the economicconditions of these days which have gone through many changes, and the emergence of anti-Keynesian views, the governments andmonetary authorities (Central Banks) both in Europe and in theStates, still implement – cautiously– fiscal and monetary policiesin accordance with the Keynesian principles. In effect duringReagan era in the States and M. Thatcher in Britain, policiesunder the influence of Monetarism had been applied, however, since inflation was not prevented and there was an increase inunemployment, these policies were forsaken and moderateKeynesian policies were implemented low-key. But criticismscoming from both Monetarists and particularly New Classicaleconomists forced fundamental methodological and assumptivechanges in Keynesianism since the ‘80s; the school that emergedin the USA is called the New Keynesian Economics, in Englandthe Post-Keynesian Economics

    Legal Framework of Gambling Offences

    No full text
Gambling has existed for centuries and hastaken on many forms during this period. Initially, therewasn’t any criminal provision regarding the concept of gamesof chance. For instance the Penal Code1 of the People’s SocialistRepublic of Albania, in chapter X, named “criminalcontravention against social moralityâ€, provides for theprohibition of gambling. Therefore, the Penal Code established the unlawfulcharacter of a single subcategory of games of chance, thegambling.Obviously, this fact reflects the economic development at agiven time and society as well as the technological innovationsthat, nowadays, influence increasingly this sector. As part of the economic sector, games of chance haveexperienced rapid growth in Albania in recent years. This recent phenomenon is regulated and controlled by therespective legal and institutional framework.Such regulation, based on the category of the game ofchance, legitimates various forms of the respective sector, implying the unlawful character of any other form notmentioned in the law, by punishing those categories which runcontrary to the legal provisions

“I Want My Mommy!†Assessment and Treatment Recommendations for Separation Anxiety Disorder

    No full text
Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a commonlyoccurring anxiety disorder in children. Indeed, SAD is the onlyanxiety disorder particular to disorders of childhood in the DSMIV.SAD creates considerable distress in parents and children. Moreover, left untreated SAD contributes to social and academicimpairment. Accordingly, proper assessment and treatmentmethods are essential. This paper proposes several means foridentifying and treating children with SAD. Assessment methodsdesigned to detect SAD in youth are presented and reviewed.Special emphasis is placed on selecting the most developmentallysensitive methods. Further, multicultural issues in the assessmentof SAD are addressed. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)models for the treatment of SAD are presented. Traditional andinnovative methods for taking care of young patients and theirfamilies are described. Several case examples amplify the salientpoints

ACB and the Asymmetric Properties in Chinese DOC Passivization

    No full text
Typologically speaking, passivization in DOCs hasfour patterns, namely passivization of merely indirect objects(IOs), of merely direct objects (DOs), of either DOs or IOs and ofneither DOs nor IOs. Chinese DOCs demonstrate asymmetricproperties in passivization. In Chinese Get-type DOCs,passivization of the IOs is acceptable while that of DOs areunacceptable. However, in Chinese Give-type DOCs, passivizationof the IOs is unacceptable, and that of the DOs is acceptable onlywhen the DOs are definite. This paper, based on the theory ofACCUSATIVE CASE BLOCKING (ACB) of Woolford (1993), will makean attempt to see whether ACB can be applied to explain theasymmetric properties in the passivization of Chinese DOCswithin the framework of Minimalist Program (MP). Specifically,it will be shown that, ACB can be used straightforwardly inChinese Get-type DOCs. As for the Give-type DOCs, we arguethat gei in ‘V + gei +NP1 +NP2’ constructions should be treated asa preposition and that the ‘gei + NP1 + NP2’ and the ‘V + NP1 +NP2’ constructions should be treated as the subtypes of ‘V + gei+NP1 + NP2’construction with a covert preposition gei in it. Thusthe IO in the Give-type DOCs will be a marked argument withGoal on it realized by a preposition, and making the DO thehighest unmarked argument. In this way, it can be seen that ACBis applicable in the passivization of all Chinese DOCs. As for whydefinite DPs are required in the passivization of ChineseGive-type DOCs, we argue that in this case, DOC in Chinese willbe a double-Spec construction in which the light verb v will havean edge feature. This feature will have to be checked by a definiteDP
